Wave Ma.K 1/20 Super Ball

Post by Tankboy76 »

I've built one Gundam Kit that was kind of similar, but this is my first Machinen Krieger Kit. I dig the aesthetic: sci fi but with a style that encourages armor-style modeling technique (to me eye at least). This kit is actually a souvenir from a trip to Japan when I spent a day checking out local hobby shops and bought a kit that would fit in my luggage.

Here is the box art, and some shots of the spurs and the painting instructions. I hope you have a Mr.Color chart and a japanese translator. A lot of mixing, I was using a completely different line of paints so the colors and ratios wouldn't line up at all - but the instructions are color, so you have a chance to mix to match (or do what you want!).

Assembly was pretty fun, I spent a long time filling seams that run the length of the legs and arms, and a weird patch piece on the lower back. Some of the results were really good, but some seams just continued to show a witness line even after resounding after priming. The results were better than I normally get - so I moved on.

Most of the paints I'll use are mission models paints - I started with Grey Primer, but ran out after the first painting session when I sanded back several parts and needed another coat. I switched to white primer and gave all the parts a final coat.

I need to buy a sheet of polystyrene so I can test colors on a primed surface, but this was good enough for me to have some fun shaking up my random bottles trying to find a complementary pair. I wanted to follow the instructions relatively close.

I ended up make the two colors by mixing each from 2 paints. Light grey tinted with some yellow, and a darker grey tinted with purple.

The result of a long session at the airbrush - same night as the white primer I did the base coat and free-handed the highlight color similar to the painting instructions. I use a dedicated airbrush for mission models to prevent contamination issues - it had a 0.5mm needle. Tonight I'll be dreaming of a .2 or .35mm needed. As a result the lines are not as sharp as they might be, but I'm not yet convinced it isn't appropriate for the scale. I do feel like the tints (purple vs. yellow) are pretty complementary.

Next up is a clear coat, decals, a flat coat, then I'll try some oil paint washes. I originally wanted to do some hairspray chipping - but I just didn't see a scheme fo this one that felt right. I think a dirty robot suit will be good enough.

whoops, I meant this to be in a build forum, not the gallery forum. :wall:
