Revell Corvette C5-R 2000 1/25

Post by ryan81 »

Hi all,

Have recently started my fourth ever build and figure when better to do my first build thread than now. This is the Corvette C5-R from Revell which was first raced in the 24 hour Le Mans in 2000 I believe, against the likes of the Dodge Viper.

Image

Similar to my first few builds, this was a favourite of mine as a kid playing video games so was excited to find a local hobby shop had this in stock, given it is an older model. What I really like is that Revell have a kit of the 2000 version of the car, as in the following years it moved to a full yellow scheme. I much prefer the white sides and black rear.

Have got all the parts off the sprue, tidied up any flash and seam lines, and got ready to be primed (majority in Vallejo grey, first time using it) - yes, those are kitchen sponges

ImageImage

Had a nice arrival of paints today so that means it's painting time!

Image

Made a start this evening, more pics to come in the following days. So far I'm still using rattle cans and brushing the small parts, slowly graduating to spraying more parts. I bought a bunch of metallic colours in Tamiya's TS range (aluminium, gun metal etc) so looking forward to an improved look on the engine parts etc compared to brushing a decent amount of those parts thus far. Airbrushing is a goal for the future but for now I'm happy improving the basics.

ImageImage

The yellow on these cars isn't your standand bright yellow, it's a bit more mustardy. Have tested Tamiya TS-16 on white, light grey and grey primers (I got inspiration from one of Paul's past threads) and am happy with the colour I'm getting from the light grey. White makes the yellow too bright and grey takes a bit too much pop out of it. The following picture shows the look I'm going with (light grey) on the left, compared to white on the spoon - not the easiest difference to pick up on my phone camera.

Image

The black line separating the yellow from white on the body is going to be a challenge as it's not totally straight and there's no marking on the kit but I'm confident I've found enough resources to use as guides.

Hoping I can do this justice. I'm excited to work with yellow as it's not overly common, but recognise it can be quite a difficult colour to work with.

More than happy to take any tips or advice, so fire away! Thanks for looking in

Look to be off to a nice start, and that is a cool car - love the Corvette race cars. :thumb2:

I'm still pretty new at this, but agree with you that yellow is a difficult color to work with. Not impossible or anything, but it's been the trickiest I've done so far (did the Revell C7R about two months ago). I did the same as you though, the Tamiya yellow over gray primer.

Yes! I’m in! Cool car, definitely the best livery with the white sides, great start.

Yeah I don't think it will be quite as hard as white, which I find near impossible to fix mistakes made with, but it's going to take a lot of coats to get the right look.

Did you make a post for your C7R? Would love to see how it turned out

Yellow and white both B's to spray. If you do their flat forms in Tamiya XF's it is easier and then gloss overtop.
Flat is easier to spray than gloss, always

Thanks for the tip Scott, good to know. If you gloss over it, is the flat quality still very present or does it appear similar to using a gloss from the start?

Depends on the gloss you are using. You could also do a flat coat first and then a gloss yellow coat on top  .
The flat would give the gloss some 'tooth' to grab on the plastic

Flat yellow worked fine when I did it on helicopter, but it wasn't a 2k gloss used over it

I can be the guinea pig as will do tamiya XF yellow and then a 2k clear on my Ducati...see how that comes out

I like that idea of flat to form its base colour and then gloss over top. Definitely going to experiment with this method as my next build is mostly white. Thanks!

Hey Ryan, yep, did a build thread and posted the final in my portfolio thread

It came out pretty good, for me. Screwed up the yellow the first time, stripped it and started over.
I used Tamiya X-8 Lemon Yellow over the Grey Fine Surface Primer.

I think the yellow you have on the chassis looks great. :thumb1:

Oh that's nice, I hope I can do mine as much justice to it as you have!

Out of interest, what's the best procedure for stripping acrylic paint? Am yet to try it but have had a few small pieces in the past where it may have been worth repainting.

I used Easy-Off oven cleaner (the foaming kind, but you can use the gel one too) . Left it on for about 2 minutes... The acrylic paint washed right off.
Just be careful with it. You can also use that Purple Power stuff, but I think it takes a bit longer.

When done with my Tamiya cans I'm going to start doing my body's with automotive style paints (Gravity, Zero, etc.) because I think they lay down better. I've used Duplicolor automotive lacquers in the past and they go down really smooth.. there is just a tendency for them to craze the paint if they go on to thick at first. I'll have to try some decanted soon as they are cheaper.

I'm really hoping I can figure out Tamiya lacquers because I would prefer to use them but I can't get them to lay down smooth. I hate having to strip my bodies so whatever works best and easiest is what I'm going to use if I can ever find it.

Thanks for the input everyone, really appreciate it.

Have sprayed most of the interior parts and happy with how that's coming along - pics to come soon(ish). Now for the challenging part of masking and painting the body

Pretty happy with the paintjob so far. Used Tamiya gloss white and black on the sides and rear, and about 4-5 coats of Tamiya TS-16 over light grey through the middle. Not 100% convinced on the finish on the yellow yet but I think the decals and clearcoat will give it some more life.

ImageImage

Probably my best paintjob so far, especially considering the multiple stages of masking. I was stoked to find there are decals for the black stripes up the sides as I was dreading having to paint that - don't know how I missed that when planning.

Some of you might recall my cling-film disaster on my Evo VI. I took Barry's advice and used a sandwich bag to mask the large areas this time, giving a bit of breathing room between body and bag. Will be sticking to this method moving forward, thanks Barry!

Looking for some more advice here. How do you avoid having a raised line of paint on the edge of masking tape? Have had this happen a few times now - perhaps I'm laying too much paint down? Hopefully the picture shows what I'm referring to.

Image

Majority of the interior done, should have this finished over the next few days. Happy with it thus far, getting an improved finish by not brushing many parts anymore. Plenty of dry fitting has been important here - getting the role cage into position was a bit of a fight!

ImageImageImage

Really appreciate Revell providing quite a few carbon decals, but have had a bit of a battle getting some of them to lay down smoothly. Good to experience a different quality of decal though!

ImageImage

Will decal and clear the body shortly (waiting for clear in the mail :wall:) but want to give it a bit of a panel line wash, which I haven't done on a body before. Don't think I need to go too overboard or dark in this case. I've only got a black wash but maybe I should pick up something lighter to get the below effect (any advice welcome)

This is coming along great!! And pretty cool that that older kit has some CF decals included - the C7R didn't.:

Interior and exterior are top notch! Looking forward to more progress.

You can sand the raised edges of the paintwork demarcations with a very fine grit sandpaper before you clear coat, that should reduce them, and then once the clear coat is applied, if there is still a visible ‘step’ you can wet sand back the clear coat and reapply another coat of clear if necessary.

Cars looking great so far by the way!

Thanks all. Luckily in this case I will be decalling over the raised area so I can afford to not get a perfect result sanding it back first time around.

Interior complete, overall quite happy with it. It's a shame all that nice detailing on the engine will be hidden from above, but at least I'll know it's there

Can anyone point me in the direction of a 'How to panel line' video? I'm sure I've seen Paul give quite a thorough walkthrough somewhere but I can't for the life of me find it now

Once everything is in place it feels like a nice fit, but it's not without its challenges. Some parts in the front are so snug that the added thickness of the paint makes it too tight to fit - the vertical piece under the dash in particular. Plenty of dryfitting is key, can't go wrong if you do so. Overall, I'm fairly impressed.

Few tough pieces to get in past the role cage so a couple nervous moments squeezing a few bits in :bash: Something else I have noticed is getting the body on over the role cage is quite a battle. I was hoping to be able to easily remove the body in the future so I could admire the interior. However, it appears you have to glue the body down, as opposed to the locator pins in the Tamiya kits - the first real difference in quality for me

Got the decals and clear coat laid down last night and pretty happy with the result  Pictures don't really show the gloss very well but will take some better ones for the final reveal.

ImageImage

First time doing panel lines, using Tamiya Black Panel Line Accent Color. Pretty happy with it but probably could have used a grey instead in this case. Was a bit stressed about it cleaning up well but glad I got the first attempt out the way - learning something new every build.

Next learning experience was a bit of decal bleeding from the clear coat. Nothing too major, and it has actually become less obvious over the last 24 hours, but basically looks like dark blue paint running down a surface. I could probably try to clean it up with some white paint but I don't think its worth it - I couldn't even capture it on camera. Not 100% sure on the reason, so fire away if you've had this happen, but a few thoughts come to mind:

a) It's a fairly old kit so decals may have taken some damage over the years
b) Laid the clear coat down too heavy
c) Clear coat was too wet still when second wet coat went on, giving it more time to eat the decals

I know every modeller has some horror stories with decals so happy this was minor and can take some learnings from it.

Will leave to set for a good 4-5 days at least while I get the rest ready. The rear window came with a notable scratch in it so will spend some time cleaning that best I can - luckily I have some experience here :bash:

Thanks for the link! I'm still pretty new to the hobby, started late last year. My first build was a Subaru Impreza WRC so naturally I came across Paul's VERY useful build series which has been the foundation for a lot of my methods. Top stuff. Thanks for the kind words

Looks awesome Ryan.. For some reason I thought you were a newb but you don't build like one. I'm pretty much a newb but @Paul has a great forum, YT channel and Facebook group where I have learned a lot myself. Here is a tutorial from another one of my heros on Panel Lines
http://www.italianhorses.net/Tutorials/ ... panels.htm
Thanks for the link! I'm still pretty new to the hobby, started late last year. My first build was a Subaru Impreza WRC so naturally I came across Paul's VERY useful build series which has been the foundation for a lot of my methods. Top stuff. Thanks for the kind words
I'd love to see it.. My first one back from a 2 year layoff was this one below. I built about six before that in a 6 month period. Still working on my second one since being back so I'm still a newb myself.

Your links don't appear to be working on my end, not sure if it's a you or me problem. In any case, here's my first build. Used Tamiya TS-13 clear which I wasn't impressed with, have used Mr Hobby UV Cut since

This is the '05 Solberg car, which I believe I witnessed crash into a ditch right in front of me when I was young. I don't recall the exact year but I think I was between 10-12 when the WRC came to NZ, which as a '94 kid places that memory around '05. There was a Norwegian fan next to me with a flag, waving like crazy, so the irony of Solberg over-cooking it into this 90 left and ending up in the ditch was unforgettable.

Man that looks great! I can't believe that was your first build. What's your secret? Can anyone else see my pics? I know I can. Mine is Solberg (#18) because I like double digits on cars for some reason.

Thanks mate, although there are certainly some imperfections that the camera didn't pick up. The main yellow decals took some damage, so bought some enamel Fluero yellow paint - not quite the prettiest clean up job, awful colour :bash: but overall I was pleased.

I just did a lot of research, and Paul's build series addressed every stage of the build which I couldn't have done without. I'm a slow builder as I'm such a perfectionist (to my dismay in many cases), so each build takes 6-8 weeks

I put the web link from your pics into my browser and found them - looks great! I also like double digits, was that an earlier car? Coincidentally my number of choice has always been the reverse, 81, all through my BMX racing days where it had to be above 50

Thanks mate, I'm quite pleased with how the colour matured and improved with the decals. I think the spoiler needed another coat as it doesn't quite match the body, but I don't think it will be too obvious when all put together

My problem is I try to build to fast.. I just love it and can't stop and want to see the completed build but I've learned to slow down and build a better quality model now. Mine was a 2001. Looking forward to seeing more of your progress.

My build has slowed down because I have a near perfect paint job and don't want to mess it up with clear so I have been doing a lot of practicing on other bodies. I'm about ready to clear it. I liked the Tamiya TS-13 decanted. It really makes a shiny model. Maybe I'll get it down smooth this time

Hey folks, took a few weeks away from the hobby to sort out some real-life issues but have finally got this one completed - full reveal here

Overall really happy with it, my cleanest build yet due to experience and brush painting less. Happy to call this done - bring on any feedback or comments
