Tamiya 1/12 '04 YZR-M1 with Top Studio Super Detail Set.

After the overwhelming positive responses from my first build, I decided I'll be doing another bike and jumping straight in with the super detail set!

The Kit, Top Studio set and MFH chain:



If you want to know exactly what comes in the detail set, let me know, I'll upload some photos!

So, I started off with the engine. There's a few resin parts added from the TS set and a bit of photoetch.

Painted with Alclad Chrome, Tamiya X-16 Flat Aluminum and Alclad Steel. The rocker cover is Tamiya titanium silver.


The throttle bodies and injectors are quite detailed! I couldn't find reference for the fuel lines, unfortunately, though there's still time if anyone has some photos I could pinch!



This part is added to the kit parts. I'm not sure what it is, but it has some solid lines that connect to the exhaust headers and crank case. I can only assume it is something for vacuum, or possibly pressure for the fueling.


The solid line is made with some 0.8 mm solder that came with the Top Studio set.

And this is where I'm at! I stupidly started and didn't check reference, only listened to the instructions so the colours of the metals are off, but I don't think it looks bad!


The hose connectors were sprayed Chrome, then brushed with clear red and clear blue. The braided line is from Prime Miniatures. It was too thick for brake lines, but I think it looks good here! A little bit of tidying up and finishing touches with the brush then the engine is done!

Thanks for the comments, guys! I'll be cracking on today with the frame. The front end that holds the clock needs some cutting and modifying and the instructions aren't amazing, so hopefully all goes well and I can paint it!

Got a little more done yesterday. I focused on the frame and swing arm as they needed bits cutting and filing.

The clock bracket needed cutting as per the Top Studio instructions, though there wasn't much to go on.


Here are the bits I cut off, with the resin part that replaces it. So much more detailed!


The swing arm chain adjusters needed to come off, and the wheel connection points needed filing down. The paddock stand parts were chopped off, too.


Drilled the valve out on the rear wheel for some shinny metal ones. My aim was perfect! The new valves came in a pack of 4, but the are tiny and round and my tweezers like to ping them as far as possible, so I'll by spending a while looking for the 2 that went bye bye.


Drilled the holes in the suspension linkage.


Frame painted in LP Semi Gloss Black.


8 pieces of PE on the swing arm so far and 4 pieces for the rear disc.



And that's where in at! I'll be adding tiny bolts for the chain adjusters today and cracking on with the suspension and Hobby Design chain set!

Thanks guys, I'm just building the chain. It's not Hobby Design, it's Model Factory Hiro. The rollers are plastic and come on a sprue placed apart the correct distance, so you just pop the PE links on then use a fine tip of a soldering iron to 'peen' the pins by melting them.

I was worried about it, but to be fair, it's going really well!

The chain went together, though the plastic roles pins have a lot of sprue connection points on. So much so I can't get the chain to sit nicely on the sprockets, so I'll try some clean up tomorrow so I hopefully don't have to abandon it!


Tyres on and decals started!


Suspension painted. Some PE bolts and a turned metal reservoir.



If you soon on the chain, you can see the problems. I hope I don't need to bin it!

Each upgrade provider has there own method for making bike chains and some are better than others and all have a draw back some where. The hobby design one I just did has metal rollers the draw back being that you need to drill out the chain holes [both sides] so they fit correctly the links all fitted without a hitch. The ones with plastic rollers take a lot of clean up to get them to sit correctly on the chain.

All you can do here is take your time. Its like the working tracks you get with a lot of tanks these days ,yes I know there bigger but no less fiddly to assembly, do the clean up well and they look great but you can tell the ones that have had little care in there assembly. The secret here is preparing the items to assemble it takes longer but the results will speak for themselves.

The drilling sounds like a lot of work! I'll be using a finer point on the soldering iron to neaten things up, though I hate to say it, but I do think I rushed through the cutting off the sprue. I will do my very best to clean it up to look passable, though!

Thanks, Gary! I'm trying my best, having some issues with my CA glue, the PE isn't sticking very well, so I'm using some hobbycraft tacky glue instead to stick PE to PE and it seems to work better!

Almost done with the back end, though I may need a spacer since the caliper bracket was replaced with PE, and is much thinner. But here it is!


I had some chrome left in the airbrush that I missed, so it came out on the clear for the mud guard, though in person it looks quite good, just a small amount of metal flake.

I used some PE on the R1M I done, and to be fair I had a few issues then. I am using just run of the mill 10 in a pack wilko super glue, though. It works for sticking the PE to the plastic, though!

RdHandlebars almost done! 10 different colours, 7 photo etch bolt heads and a resin part. I had to add little plastic squares to make the buttons look like buttons. The wire going across is to adjust the break lever feel when the brake fluid warms up, I believe!

I used some super thin wire for the lock wire on the grips, provided by top studio!

Slow progress. Done some paint and carbon fiber today. Really not happy with the way the forks turned out and I lost some paint to the masking tape. I used for gold from Zero and Metallic Brown. I used the Zero Paints metallic brown, but the forks don't look right and nowhere near the real ones. Back to the drawing board!


I got the exhaust built painted and stained. The blue doesn't pop in the photo. I'm not sure if I'm happy with it, but it's the Tamiya weathering rub make up like stuff, so can be cleaned off easily.


Calipers look tidy, though! Going to put some red enamel paint on them, the rub it off so it stays in the Brembo logo.


Airbus was done with only 4 pieces of decal, then clear coated with Mr Hobby Premium Clear. I like the outcome!



I also figured out my chain is too long, so that'll be fun! I need to take the engine out and add a bit to the the bottom fork clamp, its basically a cover and has a mounting point for the steering damper.


I also carboned the fork covers and painted the front wheel, though I didn't get pictures.

I'd really like some feedback on the forks as I'm not sure what to do with them, if anyone has anything I can try for the bottoms as metallic brown just doesn't work, that would be great!

Hey LW, I think it's all looking really good. That chain!! And the CF work!
Exhaust looks good, I think anyway... maybe shoot a little smoke over it to tone it down, but I like it like that.

I agree with the metallic brown, I didn't like it either. iirc, I mixed up a little metallic brown clear orange and chrome silver. Have no idea about the ratios, just did it till I like it. I did that bike with all rattle cans and brush, it was before I got the AB setup.

The rest of it looks bang-on bro!! Stinks about the masking mishap. Be sure and "de-tack" the tape before you put it on a part that has been painted.

The exhaust will need to be touched up by the time it's ready to put on anyway, so I may add some smoke.

I think I'll just need to sit down with some paint and some spoons and give it a go, how tedious! Hahaa. I'll try your mixture since it looks good on your thread!

If I can't find anything that works for me, I'll just use metallic grey since the original colour is quite dark.

Been a short while, had some step dad duties! I decided to keep the forks as is. They don't look too bad on the bike!

I've started getting some teeny wiring done, though.


A lot has gone into this side of the engine so far. I've also had issue after issue and really struggled with the detail set instructions, but it's coming along!




Drilling this hole should have been done before the engine went in, so it made it infinitely more fiddly. All for a tiny R clip!

Here's a few more detail pics. The radiator had some PE and a little electrical connector added.


Quick release fittings for the calipers.


Making a tiny black band for the electrical box that goes on the airbox.

4 wires to 2 to 1, took about half hour, haha.

Stuck the tail together and managed to completely get rid of the seam!


She's starting to look like a bike now!


Next is the under the seat detail, then it's connect all the wires up to the clocks. Then I can do the fairings! Thanks for looking!

I silenced I the troll by asking if he had small man syndrome and explaining he's not alone and many people are there to help. Don't think he liked that

I don't some carb9n fiber decals last night, then when starting to do some wiring, I spilled half a lot of Rubber Black paint on the desk. Didn't get anything important with the paint apart from a little on the unpainted tank, so not too much drama. I took that as a sign to call it a night, though, so not much to show, though I will be cracking on today!

Got the front breaks in and wired up. There's a lot going on now up front.




The fork travel sensor went in after the breaks, which, in hindsight, should have gone in first, but oh well!


Got the carboned with 1 piece of decal! Lots of microsol.

I've probably done a lot of this Bass Ackwards, but the instructions are not very good. Compared to the instructions in the RC213v super detail set I've got up next they're terrible!

Getting there! Somehow miraculously managed to get the chain off, shortened and back on.

It did start with me raging and cutting it off and throwing it in the parts bin.. While painting the kit chain I thought I may as well try fixing it if it's junk now cause I can't make it worse!
