Tamiya Honda NS500 1984

Good afternoon Gentlemen,
As there seems to be an influx of outstanding motorcycle builds on here recently, I thought I would take the liberty of posting my latest build which was finished this morning.
it's Tamiya's 1984 Honda NS500 finished as Ron Haslam's ride.
The model was finished out of box with Tamiya Lacquer paints and thinners, then clear coated using six coats of Tamiya LP9 once the decals were applied.
The kit was built with the aid of Marcomoto's fantastic advanced jig. I cannot recommend this highly enough, pricey yes maybe but well worth it in my eyes.











This kit went together very well with all parts fitting in the normal tamiya way. The Cartograph decals also performed very well, I used Mr mark softer to help the decals conform to the curves of the body work.

Thank you Barry, the Tamiya LP9 clear does give very good results when thinned with the tamiya retarder thinners.

The Tamiya Bike kits do go together very nicely mostly, it's a shame most of the catalogue is now only available from collectors at a high price as there are some very nice race bikes from the 70's and 80's and 90's era's

Yes no problem Barry,

This is how I do it,
I use an Iwata revolution HP-TR2 with a 0.5mm needle spraying at 15psi
The LP9 clear comes in 10ml pots and I add 5ml of thinner with retarder to the pot and mix well, then add to the airbrush.
I spray a light even mist coat, allow 5 minutes drying time then repeat this 3 times gradually increasing the amount of material laid down with each coat.( this also protects the decals from the lacquer thinner),
Next I give a slightly heavier coat wait 5 mins then a wet coat all over watching for orange peel.
then leave to dry some where dust free.
I also use this method with the tamiya acrylic clear and the same thinners with retarder.

You're welcome, I noticed that you are in the USA, obviously humidity plays quite a big part in this process, too high and you may have issues

Great info.. thanks! Just curious, when you say you gradually increase the amount of material.. do you do this by allowing more to flow out of the airbrush, or by allowing same flow but moving slower with AB or some other way?

The airbrushes I use are double action, when I say "increase the amount of material", I generally increase the flow through the airbrush by pulling back the trigger slightly more without pressing down on the trigger to increase airflow, but, I also sometimes move the airbrush closer to the work instead. Generally I don't move the airbrush across the work piece at a slower speed as with my technique I have found this to cause runs.
Trial and error is the key and practise makes perfect.
