Tamiya Mustang GT4 1/24

Well, from one Ford to another for me, I thought I'd be one of the first to try my hand at this new kit from Tamiya, with a more simple paint scheme than the Ford GT I just completed, it should be a slight break from so much masking!

So here we go, box (which I'm sure you've all seen by now):

Here are my sprue shots (sorry about the lack of clarity!)

Chrome looks WAY shiny to me!! So I think I will strip this, especially the exahust tips, I will probably leave the mirror surfaces as they are though

And the usual tactic for me, cut most of the parts out into my little organiser ready to be cleaned up properly for painting.

The moulding is beautiful on this, so crisp compared to the Revell offering I just built. The wheels and the brakes stood out in particular, I sat and stared at them for ages, they're perfect. I'll get some clearer photos along the way.

Looking forward to getting stuck in properly. Paint scheme is going to be the grey box art.

Looks a nice kit Gary and will look forward to your build diary. Funny how the quality of kits can be so stark when you compare them and another reason I stick to certain kit company's these days

Yeah as I've said before, I'm a Tamiya fan boy, so tend to stick to what I know, if this builds as good as the quality of the mouldings then I'm in for a treat!

This kit is a joy to work on, I’ve not built a bang up to date modern Tamiya kit before, but the fit and the moulding on this thing is very impressive!

Front bumper fitted beautifully and the body had very few seams to be removed, cleaned up lovely and now primed:

Engine and rear diff painted up, the three piece engine fell together, invisible seams:

These wheels....drooollllll......painted in Gun Metal

And Tamiya LP paints go down so nice, LP2 here:

If anyone is struggling with their mojo, get one of these and build it, you could do ZERO clean up and it would still fall together and build into a nice model.

I washed it straight off, I’m guilty of not wearing gloves as often as I should, I do try!

Base coat is down and I’m going to decal it over the next few days, looks lighter in the photo than in real life, I’m happy with the colour though.

Decals are on, pretty simple scheme really, usual thick Tamiya decals, they are doused in Microset here will leave it overnight and see where we’re at in the morning, they’re tough cookies.

Not had much bench time last few days, but I have maanged to get a bit more done on the 'Stang today, chassis is nearing completion now, this is with the undertrays just loosely placed as the body has to go on first, it goes together beautifully.

Still a fair bit left to do: finish the interior detailing, haven't even touched the seat yet! Windows and rubbers need painting, body needs micro meshing and polishing and then we'll be on the home stretch with this one, thanks for looking.

Haha! Love the GIFs

I like to concoct my own shades of paint, so this is Alclad aircraft aluminium with a spot of Tamiya X12 thrown in for good measure, sprayed in a very light coat over Alclad gloss black primer. The colour call out is for Titanium gold, so this is close enough for me!

I have so many other kits in the stash I want to do first, so it won't be for a while if I do decide to build another one, there are already some aftermarket decal schemes available so I might be tempted to build one of those one day.

I'd definitely reccommend the kit to anyone though

Yeah, I used Mr. Color 46 Lacquer clear over Tamiya Acrylic today and it came out fine.

I have seen the Volt scheme yeah....looks BRIGHT!!

I had a bit of an epic fail with the car last night, I managed to melt and warp the dashboard! Don’t ask!!!! Such a moron sometimes. I’m hoping I can perform some corrective surgery on it today, but I don’t think I will ever be able to get it back perfect, so will have to make the best of a bad situation

It could go one of two ways, either straighten out perfectly, or warp even more into a completely unusable ball of plastic, no pressure!

Cheers! Well things have progressed.....the dash board is now in two pieces

I should be able to scratch something up to secure it in place, and I think it will be ok once the body is on etc, it just won't pass close inspection, but I'll have to live with that.

We live and learn, at least other people do, I seem to live and continue to make monumentally stupid mistakes

Body is now micromeshed and polished though, so that's one good thing!

I may well postpone the completion, I think a new dash is needed really, I'll see how it looks when everything is finished and the windows and everything else is in, but the OCD in me will be forever triggered with a sub par dashboard

if you need a replacement i can recommend hobbyco, who are the importers of Tamiya.
I am based in Ireland and have had to get some replacement parts from them from time to time and they are excellent.
you just need the sprue number from the instructions

I did contact Hobbyco and they got back to me pretty quick, but I'm a skinflint, especially when it's my own stupid error! So in the end I couldn't justify the additional expense and decided to make do with what I had. I think I've just about gotten away with it, lesson learned, move on!

I've been working hard on finishing the car over the weekend, and managed to get it done, it needs a final wipe over with finishing spray before I take some better photos, but it's complete now.

What a great kit, the fit is exceptional and the way the parts go together, you can really feel the thought process behind the way it goes together. I think an absolute novice could bust out a great looking model, the gluing surfaces are all pretty much hidden from the finished surfaces of the model, the headlights are a work of art!

Anyway, enough waffle, buy the kit, you won't regret it.

Quick question, in waiting on a call from HobbyCo for a replacement sprue. Have no idea about price. I know it'll probably be different, but how much did they want for the sprue you needed?

Well unfortunately for me, the replacement dash just so happened to be on the biggest sprue in the kit, so with postage included it was going to be £18 (£13 for the sprue, £5 P&P), not the end of the world I know, but around half the price of a complete replacement kit so I didn't think it was worth it.

I'll probably buy another kit one day and do a different livery on it once the aftermarket stuff goes crazy for it.
