A little more done today. I've been working from home for 2 months and I go back to the office tomorrow so I won't get as much accomplished every week any more.. sure look forward to retirement.

Well, I've been practicing my paint and clear on several bodies I have.. I am finally getting the hang of it and laying down some nice, smooth paint jobs.. but.. I wasn't practicing on decals. I started spraying this one and the decals were down nearly perfect. Now some are bubbling up.. I've never had this happen before but I've also never had a smooth paint job before either... now I've got to figure out the compromise? Any ideas...?



I will say that before I wasn't laying down enough paint so I was getting that gritty look. I finally learned from the Beastie Boys.. Let it flow, let yourself go, slow and low that is the tempo... but I might have to lay it on thinner in the beginning and not wait as long between coats? Right now I have the Boogalou Flu.

Depends what clear you’re using, but generally a mist coat to start off with, let it cure for 10-15 mins and then go back with progressively heavier/wetter coats.

The decals might settle down again if you leave it overnight, if you get lucky, but don’t get your hopes up too much just in case it’s FUBAR’d

Yep.. I just about put it in the Purple Pond but I think I might just live with it.. we'll see how it looks tomorrow.. it won't be perfect but I've got two of these so I can perfect the next one. I've thought about starting over with this one and getting a different decal set for the next one but instead I want to build the next one with the same decals but with a silver paint job.

I'm wondering if it could be because I put the decals on the smooth primer? If I would have cleared it before decals they might have survived better.

I am doing a test with this hood.. that is primer that has been cleared with just the decal on top (no clear on decal). I'll clear it again as soon as it is dry and ready.

I believe it is going to either be the Tamiya decals or the fact that I put them on over the white primer. I just sprayed the car again (on top of what I did yesterday) so we will see if it improved. But I also sprayed the test hood above and put four fairly heavy wet coats on top of the Ford decal and the opposite side without decal. I sprayed three mist coats over the 57... then the fourth and final was a wet coat. None of the Revell decals wrinkled. The Mr. Color 46 Lacquer gloss clear looks really good... I'm very pleased with it.

When I do the second car in Silver I think I will clear it without decals and then put them on top of the clear and leave them like that.. Do you all think that will be ok or will it need clear on top of the decals?

Ok.. I'm back on this after a delay. I had to go back to work recently and that has slowed me down.

The wrinkled decals are a major disappointment but I'm going to run with it. Starting to put the chassis together now too.

As you can see from the last photo of the test hood, the clear went down great! Nice and smooth. It looks like the Ford decals did suffer some wrinkling as opposed to the 57 decal. I put the clear on way heavier over the Ford decal than I did on the Castrol body though.

Thanks! When I do the second one I'm going to clear first over the paint, then put on the decals and leave them without clear. I've heard that is the way race cars are anyway.

Good idea. A lot of race cars used to do it that way from what I've read, especially back then!

Yeah, we will see . My very first model was done with cheap, craft acrylic paint with no clear and it came out great.

I finished the bottom chassis (going to wait till complete to put on exhaust) and put the body on.. then got some black paper and setup a photo booth in my paint booth so I got some pics. I think it will look decent once finished with all other details.. it looks better in person than with the zoom of the camera.

So I'm a little afraid to tape off the body while painting details (the decals may come up) so I'm using Silly Putty like I learned from Bob Downie from one of his articles. This stuff works great.. it shapes so quickly and easily. Took me 5 minutes to mask this off. It will take longer to let a section of window trim dry before I can paint the other side but it will cost me less time in actual work so I can do more of something else. I got six eggs of Silly Putty for $9 and it is reusable. This is two eggs worth here.

I love this Model Master Lacquer Silver paint.. I think this is the color I am going to paint the entire body of my second Castrol Supra.

Yeah, I am liking it.. though I did use a little tape around the windows seals and it pulled up some decals on the right side of the car.. I should have just used the SP. It still looks good in person though and I am glad I didn't start over.. I'm going to take this one to my office at work to display.. almost finished.
