Revell Joey Saldana Sprint Car

I got the body pieces painted with Tamiya grey Liquid Surface Primer thinned 1:2 with Tamiya Lacquer Thinner and Mr. Color #2 Black Gloss thinned 1:1.5 with Mr. Color Leveling Thinner. Getting ready to start the chassis and engine... going to be fun doing something with a real engine, but Revell's plastic is not close to the quality of Tamiya kits. Lots of sink holes and thinner plastic. Revell does have a lot of race cars I want to build though.

I don't think I am going to clear this car because the Mr. Color gloss black is coming out nice and shiny and the decals on the real car don't seem have clear over them.. I think my black gloss matches the real car on the box.

Thanks guys! I will say that this is the most enjoyable build I have ever done. (hint, hint @barryf1fan ). It has been an easy build and I should be done with it quick if something unforseen doesn't come up. I'm going to get a few more of these kits and grab some other decals and do several different cars. I love working with these smaller body parts so if motorcycle kits are similar, I can't wait to start one.

Yeah, almost half the parts in the kit are not used it appears because they are for other Sprint models (nearly a whole sprue is the driver figure that I am not building on this build).. so there is not a lot of parts to assemble for this one. I'm definitely going to build as many different ones as I can find at reasonable prices. Built out of the box without doing much extra work a person could probably build one of these start to finish in a couple of days.

I hope you get one or more!

Thanks Jesse! Yes, I have all the pieces painted and ready for decals. The decals seem to be of low quality from just what I tried on the engine... they don't seem to want to release easy and crinkle up a bit... we'll see how they go down on the rest of the car. I've never had a problem applying decals before so I'm hoping and am wrong about them and this doesn't slow me down.

Here are all the pieces.. not many. I love that they put the white lettering on the tires for you. I'm also loving not having to prepare window glass :

This guys turned out well and he just uses Rustoleum spray cans. I love what he did with the tile grout powder to dust it up.


Looking for a photo of it I just realized he builds for Modelroundup or at least they use his photos.. probably send him the models for free.

I've recently converted to using 5 minute epoxy to glue my models together. What a difference. But I can only mix up a small batch at a time so I don't waste it before it hardens. So it is a slow gluing process but with far better results. I've been working 4 10 hour days too so it doesn't leave my much time to build or it would have been completed yesterday. But I did get most of the chassis completed.

As much as I have complained about the plastic.. so far it has fit together perfectly. The directions aren't always clear exactly where something should go but I love that they have a description of every piece. Had I built these as a kid I would have learned all about cars quicker and easier.

Yep I shall let you know, I used alclads on the Miura build and was really happy with them, they spray real nice!

Mmm epoxy that’s interesting, I haven’t heard much about it, I use bob smith industries, it’s a tad pricey but the stuff is awesome.

I use Bob Smith 5 minute epoxy. It dries quick and hard but with some give if needed (dropped). My models have never been this strong before. I do use Tamiya thin liquid cement on unpainted parts but even that is not as strong as the epoxy. Only bad thing is it takes a little longer to setup than tamiya or super glue with a kicker and then you have to mix up another batch so it is a slower process.. but worth it IMO. I've got all the parts on the car except the body parts, which I still have to decal. Won't be long now.. my workspace is such a mess.. I can't get good pics. I'll be doing a deep clean after this one is finished.

urghh im too lazy lol & it sounds like a lot of effort , yep I also use the Tamiya extra thin for non painted parts. I think ill just stick to the BSI super gold + for the painted parts.

Yep, home stretch now. One more pic before I wrap this up tomorrow and post finished pics in the Gallery section. I would be finished tonight but I forgot to paint the rear wing support

I painted the hood with Tamiya Acrylic Gloss Black and the other body pieces Mr Color Gloss Black lacquer. I may start using more Tamiya Acrylics on body parts.

Used Createx opaque airbrush black. The Createx colors come out a semi-glossy, so, after looking at photos of the real car, I opted not to use a clear coat. The graphics on the real car appear to me to be vinyl with no clear topcoat.

So far, mostly just breadboarding circuits, and learning how to control flash rates, brightness, and timing of LEDs, though I did just build a simple kit variable power supply. A fun way to spend time while waiting for paint to cure.

Cool.. I level my own frets and crown them and install my own electronics in my guitars. I'll be sure and take pics whilst building it.

I'm going to experiement with using Tamiya Acrylic flat paint mixed with lacquer thinner (which I usually do anyway) and then clearcoat it with a lacquer gloss clearcoat. Could save a ton on money and time... we'll see.

I got my BS in engineering technology more than 40 years ago, and worked as an oilfield equipment design engineer for 4 1/2 years right out of college. No electronics, though. I worked mainly with hydraulic controls and pneumatic instrumentation (which is roughly analogous to electronics). I've seen the arduino and raspberry pi kits. Looks like you can do a lot with them, but I'm still trying to learn what the basic components do, and how to use them in a circuit.

One teaser as I was testing the setup but I want to do the rest of the photos when it is dark. I also haven't polished out the paint yet. The wings are mounted in a kinda fragile way. I might not be able to clean them up very well and they have a lot of fingerprints on them now. Definitely doing it a little different next time and I am definitely building another one of these kits soon.. It was such a pleasure to build and quick. I think I have 4 to 6 of these kits in my stash.

I got some great shots last night and figured out the light placement etc., but it was dark and I was in a hurry, on the floor and using my iPhone so I didn't notice that the hood wasn't completely in place and tilted up so it messed up the photos. I'm going to have to redo them tonight. The room being dark made the difference to me. If I can get my garage dark enough I might be able to try again before tonight. I had also forgotten to use my anti-static brush over it after I polished it out. so there are sporatic dust pieces that look huge under the zoomed photos. That brush makes the difference too.

I did want to share one photo though because I didn't post a good shot of the engine in the car. One issue I had was putting in the oil filter lines. According to the instructions they go on after the oil pump and I could not get it to go between the hoses so I scratched off some of the perfect paint that was on the connectors and the hoses. The connectors are transparent blue and red for reference. Next time I will put this one first. I had to cut the part in half where it would be hidden underneath the pumps hoses to get it in the right place. Also, the only issue I had with the decals was the first one I used for the air filter.. I had to mask that and paint it after the decal failed. These decals felt different than any I have used in the past, but went on great.

Yeah Mike... glad you got yours in there.. my next one will go on first. It had the same issue with the front axle and trying to get it past the right side suspension. That axle should have gone on first IMO. Other than that it was a great build. Thanks for the comment on my lighting. I notice that all your photos in your portfolio look great and professional! Alex Kustov posted his setup over on another forum and I took some tips from him.

I know I mentioned this somewhere in either my build or my reveal.. can't find it now but I confirmed this with another builder who said:

Actually, I built this kit too and noticed they lettered the wrong side. They lettered the inside if the tire.

So you will want to use the decals on the non-lettered side of the tire and install it correctly.. the tires will fit and look better if you do this one.
