Just new and made a start ...... collecting

I usually model 7mm railways hut my mojo has stalled .... so I thought I'd try something different ..... hence here I am.

I did not have any particular theme in mind but wanted to make a diorama part of whatever I modelled. I'm messing around with plaster products for the diorama itself which is just in the planning stages so thought id better start getting some kits in. .... I have ordered in a right old mix of stuff just based on my level of interest.

1st to arrive today was a Tamiya British Universal Carrier Mk2

On order are the following

Thunder models British Scammell Pioneer Recovery Tractor
Rilsch Models British Army 6lb Anti Tank Gun
Rilsch Models Universal Carrier with crew
Hobby Boss GMC CCKW 352 ( machine gun turret version ).
Tamiya Archer self propelled anti tank gun
Tamiya M3A1 Scout car
Trumpeter German 50. KF2.8 DB9 Half track artillery tractor
Masterbox German motorcycle and sidecar with crew.

Dont think I'll be needing any more for quite some time. If I get 2 or 3 built this year I'll be doing well. I may surprise myself but some of the above will be quite involved builds.

I'm looking at the universal carrier instructions and my intentions are to try and paint as I go if possible. I'd look at breaking the build down into sub assemblies where possible as it should make painting easier and neater. As I said before, I've never really attempted these kind of kits since I was a youth and that was not yesterday.

I've ordered up some tamiya paints but probably shout have read up a bit on here first to see that it was the right way to go first.

Tamiya paint is great! Don't forget to order thinner with it. Does well with both brush painting and airbrush.

Any particular nasties with the master box build that ai should be aware of or is it just master box in general ?

It's just so small with bits that need a bit extra of care and attention. You get pulled in by the small size thinking there's not many parts or very big and won't take long. It gets a bit fiddly and takes time is all.

Nice start on the stash there & belated welcome to the forum

Rilsch is a new one on me, but there's some really good stuff in that collection.

Masterbox make some really nice, well detailed stuff but as Digger mentioned they can be very, very fiddly so maybe crack open one of the Tamiya kits first to get your teeth into something that won't throw up too many surprises.

Their Universal Carrier MMG Mk.II is a wanted item for me.......I can see the cosmos will be good to me sooon .

A vibrating table ( dont tell the missus )
Various modeling technique books

I intend looking at making my own silicone moulds going forward but I'll get some of the current learning curves over with first. I have a centrifuge for casting white metal moulds with a mould curler, white metal furnace and an industrial oven in my shed which I have tried using for railway modeling.

The scenics part is of great interest to me as well so looking to try and break my lack of mojo by breaking into that side of things first. I have some brass kits on my shelf which need finished too. They just came to a crashing halt.

I dare say there will ne a few who have experienced that before.

So, its away with the so.dering iron for a while and out with the plaster, glue and paint.

Looking forward to it.

my mould making has been limited to white metal castings so far for model railway loco parts but I am looking to attempt my own silicone moulds in the future too. I have my mate, another railway modeler who is very good at producing 3D resin masters.

Its early days yet but I will post up my progress on that front as it happens.

if I get a trial sample mould made anytime soon, I'll post up some progress / process reference shots. The biggest issue is usually getting scale dimensions to work from depending on what you are trying to cast. I am still a beginner at it myself.

Hi Matto,

a new venture for me to try something a little different. I've always had an interest in military models but never pursued it. So many of the modelling skills are transferable between the two. especially the scenics for dioramas and painting and weathering etc.

Just picking up a little of what I like. The Tamiya kits do look good. Maybe not the most detailed in some instances but the builds I have seen look relatively straight forward and confidence building.

The scout car could be the first victim. Not sure yet.
