Tamiya 1/24 Toyota TS050 Hybrid

After my masking marathon with the Repsol Honda, I thought I would go easy on myself for the next project and pick a simple paint scheme kit......

So I'm going to build this beast:



I have made a start on it, all the parts are cut out, and I'm just trying to come up with a method to paint the thing.

I will be painting the red areas instead of using the kit decals, and I have the aftermarket LM24 and WEC decals on the way as Tamiya don't have the licensing for them for whatever reason.

I have dry fitted a couple of parts, and once again, the Tamiya engineering on this seems to be just epic

Very nice choice, interestingly I have also just started this kit, I have just painted the black internal sides of the body and the gloss white exterior, some smaller parts were assembled prior to painting.
There doesn't seem to be too many builds of this kit online to look at. I guess some people are put off by the method of painting and construction required as the body is not in one piece.
I'm looking forward to see your progress.

Oh great stuff! I have seen those French videos, I'm a subsriber of his, he does some nice work. Have you got a build thread going? I haven't seen it if you have.

I think I've come up with a method and order of painting in my head now, it's not as complex as it looks at first glance once you start laying everything out and understanding what needs to be what colour. I think the Tamiya instructions almost overcomplicate it because of the gloss black and semi gloss black areas. I think I'm just going to paint all the black the same, then 2K it after decalling, then go over the semi gloss areas with semi gloss clear to dull them off a little, with some carbon decalling thrown in for good measure.

This was laying some parts out over the last few days, I haven't commited anything to paint yet though.

I have started painting a few bits, the wheels and chassis and interior have all had their first base coats. The body parts are all prepped and ready to go, been a slow week with one thing and another so I'll be cracking on with the white base coat over the weekend, updates soon! It's honestly not as intimidating as it looks once you get going.

I have painted the body parts white now and masked and painted all the black areas with gloss black, the painting of the black wasn't actually that bad I used the Zero paints pre cut mask set rather than using the tamiya masks as I was to lazy to cut them all out!
I found that if you end up with small areas of over spray when using Lacquer paint, these can be removed gently wit a cotton bud slightly moistened with white spirit. ( I think this is mentioned in the Japanese build video you posted). I am now waiting for the black to cure a bit before I go to the next step.

Hi Keith! I am progressing quite nicely too actually, I usually do the bodywork first and then do all the chassis / running gear, interior etc, but I decided to tackle this one the other way around. So all my chassis and running gear and interior items are all finished and painted, the body panels have all been painted white and I'm just in the process of masking off for the black. I will take some photos in the next few days to show some progress, all pretty dull up until now!

But I agree, once you get into it, it's not as daunting as it looks at first glance.

Fear not chaps, this is still going, it’s a bit of a battle, especially painting the red areas rather than using the kit decals, but I’m hoping it will pay off, all done now anyway and decals going down slowly, a very quick rough mock up:


Still got a load of decals to lay down and some very minor touch ups before I 2K it, I’m glad it’s a kerbside kit as there is A LOT of work in this!

Did a bit more this morning, decals are pretty much complete now, want to carbon the front end and then it will be ready for clear. I couldn’t resist a very quick mock up to see how it might look....

It’s no wonder these things can be driven comfortably at 200mph for 24 hours, the wheelbase is enormous, I can only imagine how planted it must feel at high speed once the downforce starts working properly!

It’s basically a long wheelbase F1 car with a windscreen.

Looking at reference photo's of the real cars, I think you are correct, Tamiya have used LP50 to match their decals. I have an extra set of decals with the Le Mans logos added by SK decals and these are closer to the original slightly lighter colour.

As hoped, I managed to get the 2K down on this this afternoon, pretty happy with how it’s turned out, I did notice a couple of minor (stupid) mistakes on the decals but I can live with that. The body parts will cure for a week now so the next update will be moving forwards towards completion.

Did you use the Tamiya gun metal for the wheels?
I am still working my way through the decals at the moment, all of the larger ones are in place, but there are so many small ones, some of which require part assembly of the body to place.

Thanks for the interest Keith! For the wheels I used a base coat of silver and then a very light coat of gunmetal with semi gloss clear over the decals.

There are a lot of decals aren’t there! Part of the reason I wanted to paint the red parts was because I wanted to avoid putting decals over panel gaps and then having to cut them and then think of a way to seal them!

I’ve been a bit under the weather this week but I’m just about finished now, just need to put some panel liner in the gaps and fit the front splitter and that will be that.

I did actually yes. I was a little bit apprehensive as I didn’t want to risk ruining the chrome, but it came out perfect, like a mirror, no issue whatsoever. I actually fixed the white air intake on the top first and 2K’d it as one sub assembly.

Hi mate! Yes it's all finished now, has been for a few weeks actually, I did take a few photos, but I really wasn't happy with how they came out, I rushed them and they looked terrible so I haven't posted anything up yet.

I will try to take some more when I have a bit more time for the final reveal pics, but I'm enjoying tinkering with my King Tiger at the moment.

Mine is coming along, the body work is mostly completed now, so I am working on all the interior and suspension parts. it shouldn't be to much longer before it is done.
