1/35 Hobby Boss GMC with 40mm Bofors

I have never done a group build before, will see how I go. Will be a very quick build for me

Will be going with this in the Free French scheme that comes with the kit, some extra stowage and maybe an extra basket/seat on the rear as I have seen in a couple of photos.

Thanks everyone, will be getting a start on it tonight once a few reports for work are finished.

I'm not sure if it was only the French troops that used them or if other allied units did as well?

As far as I know only the french used these in Europe.

I found a thread by fly1ngdutchm4n from a while ago which I have found very helpful, especially in detailing the engine.

So I have made a little progress with detailing the engine as follows, with materials that I have at hand. Scale sizes? probably not spot on, but still looks ok.

1. Dipstick tube from styrene rod with a disk cut out of stretched sprue for the cap. Still have to make the handle which will be made out of 28 gauge brass wire.

2. Fuel line out of a piece of scrap wire bent to reach the fuel pump. I don't think I'll be running the fuel line any further from the pump to the tank.

3. Still have the spark plug wires to try, 28 gauge wire again. The problem is the distributor cap only has five plugs, so will have to sort that one out another way. The small tank on the LHS of the engine (power steering reservoir?) actually glues into #1 cylinder, so I might have to hide the front spark plug lead behind the tank. Not sure if they had assisted steering, just a guess at the moment.

nice start - do like an exposed engine but never been brave to add bits to one (someone has sent me a link to the engine manual for the M4 HST I am building... will have to consider if that will be upgraded)

First time doing it myself, if I was sensible I would have tried it on one of my 1/25 cars first!
So far it has been worth it, no cursing, swearing or any other tantrums...

Working on the distributor at the moment, will take another photo when done

Have the engine detailing done, fair share of swearing during the process but has come up ok for my first attempt. One broken drill bit though, which of course it slipped and I stabbed my finger!

Have found otherwise that the dip stick is in the wrong place, should be in front of the distributor, but...... might move it yet

Have a bit of painting to do so I will prime this before I do the rest and then get it glued to the chassis.

I followed suit on the M4 HST and added a little to the engine. I may look to see if there is more to add as, if I leave the grill doors open, you can actually see a fair bit of the powerplant

Done that more than a couple of times, also had a knife roll off the bench while I was reaching for something and stand at attention in my foot. That one leaked for a while

I'm going to add a couple of oil leaks and few other bits when I paint. Have a friend who has a lot off books he said I could borrow for doing my models. He has one on the CCKW trucks which looks great, but to be honest I probably won't finish it in time if I follow it.

Maybe the next one I'll go completely overboard with it

Thanks, no a friend has a large reference collection. He let me have a bit of a look through the CCKW book he has.

Have seen so many different engines, some with the dipstick tube behind the distributor and some in front...some engines painted grey and some painted in olive green (a GMC olive green gloss).

I'm done

, will post a photo of the engine when I decide which damn colour I finally decide to use...

Really nice work sprucing up that powerplant - the added details really take it to the next level!

As for the colour - it's your kit so paint it how you want

I usually try to vary the shades to break up the monotony of an all green vehicle if I can - just to add a bit of interest.

Back again, been a bit busy with everything else this week but now have a bit of progress.

I have almost finish the main painting of the engine, still have some wear, a wash and some dust to add.
Some assembly of chassis and wheels done....getting there at least

I like how the wheels assemble to display the brake drum behind them. I have also left the exhaust off to paint and weather before gluing it on.

Also, I have painted the welch plugs brass and will add some green back to them to show some flaking paint.

So, I've been missing for a couple of weeks but have been making some progress in that time as well. This could turn into more than one post so here goes or maybe just a long one.

Chassis -

I have continued with the assembly and in my usual way skipping steps to make painting etc easier...and harder for myself.
Decided to put the motor in and mask it up later, as the instructions indicate...

Cab and rear body -

Interior and PE on cab done, I did make up a accelerator pedal from a a Flak 30 foot rest (tan colour) as the instructions didn't show a part number for the pedal.....then several steps later noticed the accelerator pedal attached to sprue B, part 42.

Going to add a covering to the seats at some point, but will add the photos later.

Filled some pin marks and gaps, tried my hand at soldering the PE parts and have to say that I don't know why I hadn't tried it before as it works great. I even soldered a small loop between the toe hook and some chain for the winch.
Then a quick test fit to make sure everything lined up ok.

I have also made a change to the winch drum, made up some smaller cable from copper wire using five strands only to make a smaller diameter cable. The string cable supplied with the kit does tend to fray when painted.
The cable isn't perfect, but will look good enough I think when it's painted etc.
Filled the drum to allow me to make less cable that I would have to wrap around it.

Made a bed roll/stowage from the excess milliput left over.

Added some chains to the rear tailgate. Seems any builds that I could find on the net had it glued shut, so just to be different and add some more ammo boxes or personal effects.

Had a win with the winch cable, has worked out pretty good after snapping the tow hooks on the front bumper about a dozen times!
Had a bit of a play with the seats, tissue paper with pva glue and water mix.....stolen idea

Have started on the gun mount as well.
Hopefully some paint on soon.

Not too much progress, a couple of other things getting in the way.

Gun is finished though, I thinned out the muzzle a little, drilled out the seat holes and everything else is from the box. PE was fiddly for the front sights with four wingnuts.
