Good morning fellow Plastic stretchers and Glue officiates

Thought I would drop a few lines, primarily to say, still gripping on to this spinning ball of rock, called earth.
I have been not in a great place lately, the Black Dog jumped up playfully on my knee and wanted a lot of attention. This has left me quite close to a precipice that I stare into frequently. I always come away from the edge, but at times, have balanced on one leg, with my toes curling over edge, and staring intently at darkness…….
You get my drift some of you out there.
Life in Chez DW, like everywhere, has been up and down like a Kangaroo on heat.
Mrs DW, who was Furloughed in UK Lockdown 0.1, went back after Lockdown, and with her wonderful Team, worked their cotton socks off, making Resort Safe, Clean and Workable. They built working relationships again, and employed expensive Fogging systems and cleaning regimes to enable a safe and secure workplace for Staff and Customers alike.
No case of Covid-19 in any member of Staff or Customer recorded. Not one. Yet, 3 months later. Mrs DW on our drive when I got home. Her Lap-Top, and works ancillaries in a Bag for Life, and her and her Team, Lockdown till 2.12.20 (and no doubt beyond).
Anyhoo, off Soap Box and back to some Model stuff.
I haven’t really been going into M/C, not cuz its depressing, no, its just my Modelling MoJo has been non-existent. Also, if MoJo is non-existent, it’s more likely that I’ll cock something up.
So, despite aiming to build OOB and no diorama, I ended up watching multiple YT Vids and was inspired by Plasmo and CW Modelling to do a simple Dio.
I had some cut-offs from the shelving I put up a month ago in M/C, and using a piece of off-cut that was about 180cm x 160cm, this seemed an adequate size.
I used my Mini Router to remove a “Cloud” shaped porting from middle to a depth of approximately 1cm.
Then over a period of a week, each morning before going to work, I lightly rubbed down edges and areas not going to be covered up with Dio, with Fine Grade Sandpaper.
Each evening, after work, I would give areas sanded a coat of Yacht Varnish, and then leave to dry over night. Before, repeating the morning “sanding” and evening Varnish coat.
After a week, this left a deep Gloss on exposed wood.
I then masked up areas varnished and gave the recessed areas a coat of PVA.

I could then cut up, with my Hot Wire, some undulating pieces of Foam and stick them down in recess.

Over the Foam, having got a basic form of Groundwork. I then covered the Foam in Das Modelling Clay (Terracotta colour). Wonderful medium. Easy to “Squish” between fingers to make sheets, that could then be laid over the Foam and moulded to form Rocks and Ground. I also pushed the T62 model into wet Clay to give Track impressions.


On a side note.
Having watched a fair few Plasmo YT vids, and having always been struggling with C/A and PE. I watched vids on Soldering PE.
I had an old Soldering Iron that I had used from time to time to cause damage / shell effects on Models.
It didn’t have a very fine tip, and so time had come to replace the worn out unit.
So this came through Post.

Blow me!, you cant go hunting around on www. Without ending up on Modelling supplier sites, so this crept into my Basket.

Of course, a Basket would not be complete with a few more Lacquer Paints from Tamiya to add to growing collection.

I haven’t used a lot of Lacquer Paints despite being sucked into adverts on back of Military Modelling Mag.
I had a little War-gaming model that has hung around M/C for months, Primed but not painted. With A/B out, I shot some Olive Green Lacquer Paint on to model, and was greatly impressed with finish. Absolutely amazing finish.


So their you have it for now.
This weekend, a bit more work on base is called for.

A very damp and dank drizzling day on Sunday in the UK. I found myself in M/C on Remembrance Day instead of at local Cenotaph as UK Lockdown still in full flow.
I could still partake in the depth of the Midlands and listen to the service on Radio, whilst Big Ben tolled 11 O'Clock.
As Ex-Army, and having lost some mucka's in First Gulf War, it lends my thoughts to the youth struck down in their prime. Happy go lucky chaps with not a care in the world. At the going down of the Sun.........
After a nip of Jura Single Malt (stashed in M/C for just these times), I warmed up and continued with Dio for T62.
I sprayed the whole base with Vallejo Grey Primer.
Then laid down a thin coat of the following all over the Primer.

Gave it a blast with the Hair-Dryer, just to speed up drying time. Then laid in the Track lines the following colour, and in and around the edges and shadow areas.

So finished off with this.

I then dug some of this out of fridge (I find it keeps the consistency fluid in the Fridge once tub has been opened).

I worked it on areas, and then left it to dry naturally.
That, Im afraid is it, for now.
I'm looking at a bit of Static Grass application next and some gravel. Break out the Modge Podge

Afternoon all

I hope you are all very safe and you’re families keeping equally safe ?

Well, in between an awful lot of the usual jobs and tasks that accumulate over a work week, the usual odds and sods that grow from lists that the other ½ dreams up. Probably, I say probably, not assisted by Mrs DW being Furloughed.
I managed a quick sneak into the M/C on Sunday .
As we all do, during our spare / work time away from our Work-Benches, we plan out our next steps in our heads. No different, I was planning on using a bit of kit that I have never used, seen used on various videos and on various sites. The Static Grass Applicator.

It looks like a big old Heath Robinson Tea Strainer, but battery powered
I have had it for ages, sat in a draw with an assorted pouches of Static Grass in various lengths.
Well, finally I bit the bullet and had a go.
Just before that though, I wanted to accentuate the shadows of the Diorama, so I broke out the Burnt Umber Oils and some AK Odourless Thinners, to create a wash. I always squeeze a smidge (it is a UK Measurement ) of Oil Paint on to a piece of scrap card, just to soak up the oils.
I then worked the wash into the crevices and along the Track indentations just to give a bit more Shadow in those areas.

Having let that dry, I could break out the various Grasses / Flock and stick some batteries into Applicator. I applied a layer of Modge Podge

in areas that required Grass, and then hit the Red button and lightly shook the Flock over the Modge Podge.
Bingo !

You build yourself up and go over the requirements, and think it will all fail, when all along “Have a little Faith” (Says Oddball )
So a bit more Modge Podge in places, all the time taking the T62 off and on to check on view.
I started off with the 6mm and then gradually made my way down to the 2mm. Not sure if this is the correct way of doing it, does it matter if you go from 2mm to 6mm?

I had a few Garden Twigs left over from past projects, that in scale look ideal for Logs and thick branches. I bored a hole with a thick Drill-Bit and some more Modge Podge applied to glue these branches in various locations. I extracted from my Dio Box some 6mm Rough Grass from www.warpainter.net to sit around the bottom of said branch. I then dotted some of these self-adhesive Tufts around Dio. All the time, taking the T62 off and on to check for how it sat.

So far, this is the rough result.



I didn’t take any photos but I have dirtied up the Track with the following so the vehicle now sits a little better in the Dio.

Once this is dried and settled, I can take some images for your critique. May need a bit more "Wodged" into crevices and Sprockets and Drives, who knows, maybe less
All in all, its getting there. Not yet, a bit more fettling and such, but it’s getting there. It may require a bit more vegetation here and there, but best to leave it as it is, rather than mucking it all up .
That’s all she wrote, as Coen would say, and hopefully, once it all dries thoroughly, and I knock off residues of Flock, it should start to look the part. I have a seated Mujahedeen ready to go, just need to paint up the Standing chap.

It definitely needs some tweaking and work, but for a first time with this bit of kit, quite surprised.

Morning all

Hope you’re all keeping incredibly well and staying safe .

I got some small time in M/C on Sunday, and although being nagged to work on another kind of painting i.e. Radiators for Central Heating, which is a real ball ache as the paint I had is really fussy to get a good coverage. I’m swapping to Rattle Cans, which despite fumes (outside spraying me thinks), gives a better finish.
Anyway, this has nothing to do with Modelling as usual, and off I go rambling into no Plastic stuff chat.
Back to the important stuff then.
So if you remember from my last post, I talked about “Muddying” up Tracks and Running Gear with AK Terrains, Sandy Desert (AK8022).

So here are some images of suitably dirty Tracks and Running Gear.




You’ll notice a figure has appeared from nowhere?

Well he is a kit supplied figure that I was working on for a while. He’s been attached now with a blob of Jarvis Extra Thick C/A to his posterior.
Also added a Terrier Dog from the Tamiya 1/35 US Modern Equipment set.

I have another figure from the kit supplied, that is in the process of being painted in various acrylics, and have dug out my Lifecolours Flesh Set so I can do some justice to his craggy features.


This last figure will finish off this dio, he's the one who's going to be holding the Enfield rifle
and I can then crack on with something new, hopefully before Christmas sets in.
Mrs DW made a very sweeping statement about me at the weekend, stating how difficult I was to buy for at Christmas
I wonder sometimes if she really knows me that well after 27 years

I've toyed with the electric tea strainer for static grass myself but never pulled the trigger - having seen your results I'm now thinking I should take the plunge (or maybe put that on a Christmas list since I'm in the same club... tools are more acceptable than kits apparently...)

I took the plunge and its been sat in a draw unused for a while now. Watched some YT Vids and thought "Hell, lets have a go".
It looks hilarious, the unit that is, and really something that was knocked up in a 5 minute Brain Storm. But it really works
Have found that the Earth Clip, the wire that need to go into base / Dio being "Flocked", works better if attached to a needle then pushed into substrata (good Monday word).

Afternoon all

Well, I hope I find you chaps and chapess very well, and everything safe and well in you’re worlds?

So how’s the world of DW doing?
Friday was my Mum’s 85th Birthday, so I took a day off work, and travelled 55 minutes down the road to see if I could surprise her. Well, it worked brilliantly. Mrs DW placed Presents on Letterbox stand, and then stepped back to more than 2m’s distance, having pressed Doorbell .
Outcome? Mrs DW Senior gets treated on opening door to a rousing round of Happy Birthday, that a few passer-by’s joined in with (thank you folks), and total shock and awe on Mrs DW Senior’s face.
Brilliant but very, very moving for all. So much so, that Mrs DW had to drive home as so much dust in car for some reason .
I find as one gets to the end of a project, the Quickening to get on with another kit takes over. This build has been going on now since April of this year (are you kidding me DW, get a grip man, this is ridiculous ). A lot has gone on in in my world and the world full stop since then, so I suppose I could and should cut myself some slack.
The need to finish this builds and the need to unbox new plastic quickens. But, I have to finish this to a standard I’m happy with .
So this Sunday gone, the last figure for this Dio was moistened with various paints.
Having given the body a shot from A/B of Tamiya Desert Yellow,

It was time to get the Hairy Stick out and do some detail and shambolic face painting. I just for the life of me, despite watching vids after vids on YT, and buying countless books, I just have trouble with getting it right.
So, I have got my trusty Lifecolour Flesh set out and got to work with various shades of Base, Shadows and Highlights.

If you squint from 300m’s plus, it doesn’t look that bad.


I dry-brushed the main torso with a lightened shade of the Desert Yellow and then after a coat of Tamiya XF Flat Varnish, ran a little Tamiya Panel-Line Brown into shadows. Mainly to pick out Shadows and to give a more dirty look to clothing. I apologise I didn’t get any images of the end result, but it looked fair to middling.
I do intend to tone down the blackness of the hair and Moustache as he looks like something out of Village People at present .
I also have bought a couple of Leaf Stamps which have been on my Wish-List for some time. I ordered them via Historex Agents and plumped for the Oak and Maple. I have been saving up fallen leaves from Garden and hope to get a few Maples on this Dio.

Hopefully, this build is drawing to a conclusion now, and once figure is complete, we’ll call it done and dusted soon.

Good afternoon all

Hope I find you, you’re families and loved ones very well and safe?

Secondly, lets get down to a monumental day for Donkeywalloper this Sunday, just gone .

Having received the final part of the build Jig-Saw i.e. Leaf-Cutters (Dies not Ants ), and having collected suitable leaves from Garden and dried them accordingly, I could get down to one of the last parts of this model. Now, botanically, after gluing these Maple leaves on areas of Dio and tank, I did think, “Do Maple Tree’s frequent Afghanistan?”

Maybe, Maybe not, I’ll find out off one of you learned Gents or Wikipedia or somewhere on the Web
I thought it lent some contrast and I like them, so there .
I also finally finished painting the Standing Mujaheddin and assembled him at the front of the Dio. The Dog looks as if its eyeing his leg to relieve itself .

I also finished the Mud around Tracks with some Dry-Brushing with White acrylic and some Spots of Oil Paints (Sienna and Vandyke Brown), washed into crevices and random areas.
I gave the whole thing a once over with Matt Varnish piped through A/B, and stripped off the Blue Masking Tape surrounding the base and protecting the edges.
I am calling it a day on this model and Dio. Started in May this year and finished 6.12.20, bit long even by my standards of a plodding modelling .












New skills learned and hats off to Trumpeter, who are easily one of my favourite Manufacturers for AFV’s, value and quality wise.
Now, after completing any model, my OCD kicks in and I am required by the law of Walloper to invoke my rituals, Work Bench stripping down.

All brushes used, treated and washed with Brush Cleaner and reshaped and carefully dried.
The old Blue Towel that protects the top of Work-Bench, is washed and Tumble-Dried. All Paints are placed back in Paint Storage and Tools cleaned, and Knife Blades changed for new.
Wooden surface of Work-Bench polished and then everything placed back on and rearranged to suit.



Then, all set-up and ready to go.

I have in my M/C a pretty spot-on Fan Heater I picked up from Amazon, and with temperatures in UK fluctuating between Cold (Freezing, well not Canada Freezing but still cold ), and worrying about paints and solutions being affected by cold, I have a Timer set up so the Heater comes on for 30 minutes in the morning and evening just to take chill off M?C. To be honest, the Shed is so well insulated, it holds heat extremely well.

To be honest, not sure with Christmas coming up, whether to start a new project. I am dropping heavy and very suitable and frequent hints to Mrs Donkeywalloper for the new Dragon Apollo 13 model that’s come out. I listened to the 13 minutes to the Moon, 50 Year Anniversary Podcast and it really blew me away. Listen to it, you’ll be mesmerised by the bravery and courage.
Whatever comes from that big red chap over the Christmas period will be a bonus .
I want to thank everybody who chipped in with encouraging comments during build, and the support from you chaps when The Black Dog arrived to visit me (thank you Quax especially for kind words). Hope you enjoyed this build and despite my ramblings into DIY and such, thank you for sticking with me on this.
