Airfix 1:48 Hurricane Mk 1

Post by matto21 »

Hi all,

This is the second project I have on the go at the moment. I actually started building this 4 - 5 years ago, got as far as assembling the cockpit parts, then moved house and forgot about it.

I'm not a fan of Battle of Britain brown/green camo schemes, so have decided to paint this as an 880 NAS machine and I've bought some decals from Model Alliance to use.

Anyway, it goes together pretty quickly with no major issues, so it's painting time already.

Undersides are a mix of Light Aircraft Gray from Mr Hobby Aqueous and Light Grey from AK 3rd Generation.

I've also made a start on the upper camo, the Dark Slate Grey is from Vallejo and the EDSG from Mr Hobby Aqueous again. The camo is painted freehand and both colours have had some mottling and fading, without going OTT. I'll undoubtedly return to this again once the wings have been done.

I always paint in sections like this to avoid getting bored!

Thanks @BigWall, progress has slowed down recently, understandably. Hopefully get the upper parts of the wings painted soon...

I've neglected this recently, despite intending it to be a "quick" build and paint job. I finally got it back on the bench last night and made a start on the upper wings.

My progress would be quicker if I could paint both wings in one go, but find that doing one colour at a time, per wing, is about the limit of my concentration. If I try to do more I usually mess it up!

I paint camo freehand, and try to do as little masking as possible - in this case just the leading edges and the wing root. I also had some issues with the Sky Grey lifting from the fuselage sides so only used the absolute minimum amount of tape. There's a tiny bit of overspray to clean up but nothing too drastic.

I've done a bit of post shading, more for effect than accuracy. Next up is the EDSG and then I can start the second wing!

Thanks for looking

How do you do your mottling? It looks amazingly smooth and subtle.

Hi Joe,

Thanks for the compliment and question. Answering it is difficult because by saying "there isn't really a technique" sounds evasive!

The truth is though that I don't like, or use pre-shading or black basing or any of these other popular techniques. I don't like the patchwork effect of pre-shading and black basing just seems to darken the overall colour.

I tried both, but didn't like the results and found they just delayed things unnecessarily.

So all I do is paint the base colour, then randomly (and I mean randomly) mottle over the top with a lightened paint mix. Sometimes I do a bit of post shading along certain lines and panels, but the majority is completely random. I often go back with the base colour to "edit"bits I don't like (I need to do this with the EDSG I painted last night).

And that's it!

That makes sense. More of a color modulation. The effect looks great!

Thanks for the comment guys, it's much appreciated!

Bit more progress tonight, and all of a sudden its looking more like a finished model.

Annoyingly, and despite my best efforts, there's been some paint lifting on the starboard fuselage side, immediately above the wing root which'll need fixing.

Next up I need to figure out how to mask the tail area.

You wouldn't want to have experience of a class 5 Cyclone as we call them. Underground bunker on high ground would be the only safe place.

I've also applied a gloss coat in readiness for the decals. More progress soon hopefully!

Once again, thank @digger303 and @BigWall for your comments.

Decalling is now underway. I've been impressed with the Model Alliance decals so far, they've settled into the recessed detail well.

I'm not a big fan of the multipart roundels though!

Aside from the effort required to apply the multipart roundels, they really are excellent quality decals.

Things have really slowed down recently, as I've been distracted by other projects.

Found the time to repaint the spinner, plus start to get the (obviously flimsy) undercarriage ready by assembling and painting using the rather nice Vallejo Metal Colours.
