1/48 Tamiya Bf-109 E-3

Post by aur0ra145 »

Is it really modelling if you don't post about?

I just realized that I hadn't posted any pics of my current build. This year will be the year of the Bf-109 for me. I have 5 kits of them, including this one, so time to actually build what I own. One will be desert themed for the GB. This one however, will be the first yellow nosed 109 I've attempted. All the kits are either Tamiya, Eduard or Hasegawa. So, I'm expecting pretty easy builds, with well engineered kits.

The build list as of now, all 1/48:

Tamiya Bf-109 E-3 (current build) 61050-2500
Tamiya Bf-109 E-3 Swiss Messerschmitt 25200-2500
Eduard Bf-109 F (I have the royal class dual combo) R0014
Hasegawa Bf-109 K-4 09063

I also have a 1/32 Revell Bf-109 G-10 that's supposed to be Bubi Hartmann's. I've never done 1/32 so I may throw that up for the out of comfort zone build. Though, I have a lot of OOCZ kits for everyone to choose from!

I do plan on using different paint manufacturer's and techniques to use the kits as a control and the differences will be made with the products. Overall everything will be airbrushed with an Apex and possibly my Sotar 20/20 for little bits. Though I always have a tough time getting that airbrush to work properly.

Anyway, here's the build so far.

Interior painting done in Tamiya XF-22 RLM Grey (RLM 02, or close enough for modelling work.) Primed in the trusty old Ultimate Matte Black.

Small update. I primed the whole thing and painted the yellow parts yellow. I'm still getting the hang of MMP.

I know what you mean about lack of posting a build. Of late I get quite limited bench time and when I do it's the odd hour at best, having to photograph as you go robs you of time to build. I really like making build logs but the lack of time is preventing me from my normal detailed logs.

Like many others Covid, is home working and that means more work longer hours :wall:

The builds off to a good start mate :th:

Got the blue bits painted. Then I masked and painted the top parts RLM 2 Gray.

In other news, I 3d printed and painted Jyn Erso's blaster from Star Wars: Rogue One. Came out pretty well. It's based off of a Luger.

Next steps have been taken. I masked and painted the wings and fuselage. It looks like it went on well. Next up will be clear coat for decals!

I'm loving the camo! Particularly over the tail section. That really came out nicely!

The blaster looks great as well.

The progress you do not see in this picture is due to an error of mine. I accidentally gloss coated the 109 before doing the fuselage mottling. Soooooo, I tested out the paint cow and spraying paint directly on glosscoat is terrible. Cue me then dullcoating the entire model.

Hopefully, the mottling will test well and go down well. If not, it'll just be a non-mottled 109.

Put on the bottom side decals. Went on pretty well. The setting solution worked great! Also, the balkenkreuz was a bit larger than the wing surface. So, after it set about half way, I cut it with a xacto knife. It looks real good!

Took 3 different sessions over several days; but, I finally got all the decals on. I'll see how the crosses on the wings setup, then it will be time for a clear coat.

It looks magnificent absolutely lovely. Such a nice crisp paint job...well done.
It crossed my mind with the wing decals if you spun them 180 would they fit better ? It looks like they are angled for the wing profile.

Thanks!

I'll look into turning them 180 in the future, I used some after market and they didnt say anything. But it does make sense.

I will say, the decals still had some setting solution on them when I snapped these pictures. That might be causing an effect.

Tonight will be clear coat and I'll attempt some work on the Chapparal.

The wife was working from home today and I was told to, "Stay in the man cave and don't come out for 2 hours." So, joyfully I got some modelling done. I'm calling the 109 finished. I haven't been allowed out yet to get my light box; but, here are some quick cell phone shots.

It's hard to tell but their is some light weathering done. I'm of the opinion that most aircraft models are wildly over weathered.

Next up will be some sort of airplane. It seems I'm enjoying them a lot more than armor these days.

That looks really nice and the camouflage decal choice is perfect. I tend to agree with you on the extreme weathering. You have a great display piece here.

I built an ME-109 in 1/24 by Airfix for a local hobby store to display around 20 years ago with the exact same colors and decals. They closed up and I never got it back, so thanks for sharing your build as it brings back some good memories.

Have you decided what you are building next?

I'm not quite sure about what to start next. I have a Bandai B-Wing I'd love to do. There are also a bunch of other 109 kits sitting on the shelf too...
