3D Model "Challenges"

Post by bfrd »

Occasionally, I (or a designee) will post up a challenge object for the users to create in a 3D program. The internet is full of ready-made 3D objects, but nothing beats making something yourself. The post itself should only contain a picture of your model (rendered or not) and a brief explanation of anything that you found novel or interesting about the build. There are two main "free" 3D modeling programs out there that can easily be downloaded.

Autodesk Fusion 360

Trimble SketchUp

I have used and own both. I find that they both have positives and negatives, but I find myself using Fusion 360 almost exclusively. There are tonnes of YouTube tutorials on both. Modeling isn't just about learning how to do one thing, and knowing how to make things in 3D is a useful skill. It is even a skill that the old dogs can pick up. It can also save your bacon if you lose or destroy an important kit part (cough cough).

The threads will be identified with "Model Challenge #X:" in the title. The first post will be a simple description of the object to be modeled. There should be NO other posts in the thread except to post your creation. The models selected should be self-explanatory enough to not require further discussion. Specific questions about the software program should be posted in that forum. While this isn't a contest I think it could be fun.
