3D Challenge #1: Cartridge (ammunition)

The inaugural challenge is a Cartridge.

This should be an unfired bullet and casing. Any caliber is acceptable from handgun to artillery. The model should be accurate and dimensions and type identified. I am not looking for your interpretation of a cartridge, but an accurate representation of something real. If possible also show any machinist drawings you used to create the model.

I've only briefly tried Sketchup and I'm a novice on Fusion360 but will give it a shot, no pun intended. I made a start but I'm stuck on the end the hurts when it hits you, the bullet!
The shape is giving me a headache as I cant remember how to do it. I managed to sketch out the casing and I'm currently trying to add to the firing end.

The area from the large tube to the bullet end should have a straight slope of 40% (Alfa) instead of a fillet, also the Delta angle

H2 or G1 doesn't look right the step down is too large.

Do you mean the Alfa angle, it doesn't your right and the fillet doesn't help instead of a sharp angle

Are you starting from a sketch, or using the cylinder tool?

I started with a cylinder tool but then started with two circles, when I select loft points 1 and 2 and enter a distance nothing happens

I made an 8x57 Mauser cartgridge.

This is the technical drawing that I used.


I created a sketch and drew the profile according to my tech data. When entering the length data Fusion does simple math so I just entered the diameter values provided and added " / 2" to get the radius.


Then it was just a matter of using the Revolve tool and selecting my profiles. I used the Appearances to give it a more realistic look.

I Take ages not using the software that much and having an old walnut as a brain I tend to forget things. Its a fantastic bit of software and great fun to play around with but complex shapes and the different tools etc take some getting used to and I'm very much a beginner. Love the rendering in Brass. Looks like you did a 2d sketch and used a mirror tool but not really sure
Am I going about it the wrong way starting with a cylinder? Oh and sorry, I posted in the wrong thread

Have you also drawn the primer, primer pocket and markings on the head? That would be cool.

I got my hands on a partial crate of 8mm sniper ammo out of the former Yugoslavia. The tip may not be quite a sharp as I drew it, but fairly close. I haven't drawn the primer or its pocket, I need to dig out a round and look at the head markings. Haven't opened up the gun safe in a couple of years!

Still, got a club shoot at Bisley on 11/04/21, just hoping it won't be cancelled last minute.

I wonder if the ammo you had was the 7.92x57 Mauser, that did have more of a pointier Spitzer bullet?

All 8mm is technically 7.92 isn’t it?

As requested, I added the headstamp and Berdan primer (I even modeled in the anvil on the case, but you can't see it).

Downloaded the Fusion360 and the very first lesson learnt was - I need to severely upgrade my PC. Takes 15 minutes for the program to load and then every mouse click is put the kettle on time... In defence of the PC - it was built in 2007.
So - rules me out of trying but if anyone wants to have a go at a Soviet 7.62x54R round I happen to have a belt of them in the PKM upstairs that I can get dimensions from....
