1/35 Academy Sherman w/Calliope

Post by Rugash »

Here is one I am working on at the moment....one of many but will get to the others later.

The Academy Sherman with some extras and some scratch building. First time doing sandbags and Evergreen styrene products, but seems to be coming together well.
First time using Tamiya grey putty for the castings as well. Wiring on the calliope isn't exact, but will do me this time.

Up to primer stage, just waiting on a new compressor as the old one is too dam noisy.

very very nice... what did you use to make the sandbags - miliput? If so, any tips - every time I use it it is always too wet/soft and loses definition when I try to mould it

Yes, I used original Milliput after watching a couple of Youtube videos, there are more just use which ever method that works best for you. Waiting until the milliput sandbags have started to set helps to get some more contours/shape to stay how you want.

1. Use Tamiya/Italeri sandbags to get the length (I went a little shorter in the end to get them thinner).
2. Roll it out into a sausage and them flatten slightly (don't forget some water to keep any tools you use wet so the Milliput doesn't stick to them and your workbench.
3. Pat/press some medical gauze/bandage onto them to give a fabric texture.
4. Use a sharp hobby knife to lightly mark a seam around the edges that you can reach.

And as they say in the videos, use a tooth pick to give them some shape before pressing the gauze and marking the seam around the edges.

I did have a few errors, cursing and swearing to go along with it as well. But while the putty is soft you can knead it back together and try again.

There were few more that I can't find at the moment.

Finally putting some colour on something, first coat done and will try a bit of a fade tomorrow.

Used Lifecolor UA220 and the fade will be UA224.

I have also had a little progress with this one, no set area fully completed as yet though.

Sandbags roughed in with a 50/50 mix of Vallejo 70.876 Brown Sand and Model Air 71.023 Tan Green Hemp, then a 60/40 mix of Game Color 73.200 Sepia and 73.202 Pale grey wash.
Then because I forgot to do it first, Vallejo chipping medium over the first coats of the base Life Color olive drab (no matt varnish in between this time) and then a faded shade Life Color olive drab over the chipping medium......and then some more water and scrubbing to give the paint a worn look.

I feel I maybe over did the chipping, but I can always use the sponge technique the change that and maybe the washes etc may smooth it out a bit as well.

Such heavy changes :!: the running gear don't break?

I love all the variants of the Sherman, so many and some are funny! :thumb1:

Good work already done! :th:

Sorry for not too much viewing and comments from me on my posts or everyone else's.Haven't spent too much time infront of the computer unless I've been doing work.
Thank you for the comments everyone!

Back at the Sherman now, some photos not taken but still some progress.
Some finer paint to do, forgot to paint the German para helmet on the LH headlight :shifty:

Pin wash done, have some stowage being painted at the moment, tow cable needs a little more and some rust mainly to the field mods and a little mud. Some of the painted chips in the paint are not quite right but that can be fixed.

Not too much to go, glue the calliope to the turret (probably add some weld around it once set), a couple of figures and some stowage, then that will do.
Will gave to invest in making a small area to photograph my models at some point. Only using my phone at the moment.

Thank you Gentlemen! :cheers2:
I have really enjoyed getting back into modelling (it does peeve the wife off sometimes though  )
Have bought a handful of new ones recently and will make some posts about them once I finish a couple off. A couple of civilian versions and a What if armour as well.

Cheers :th:
