Tamiya Universal Carrier Mk II 1/35

Post by gosselin2112 »

This model has really become a project. But I am having a lot of fun. I have decided to challenge myself by adding rivets (Yup, i'm nuts).

Great job so far :) I was making one of these but the project stalled :( due to some other 'distractions' in the form of a Sea Vixen ....

However I'm not brave enough to add rivets so good luck !!

Yes, I just got a look at it today! Comes with a lot of nice stuff and PE. Just a little out of my price range :( But then again the Resicast kit is even more expensive

An update for this build is long overdo

The rivets on the exterior came out pretty well. I liked the technique, but it can be a little time consuming. Maybe next time I'll just invest in some Grandt bolt/ rivet heads. Or not be so ambitious

I wanted my carrier to be well loaded down with gear, water, and fuel. Hey, this is North Africa. I don't want my crew out there without the essentials. I used various stuff from my spares box. Often field crews would weld all sorts of brackets and racks for stowage. I decided to put the water cans in a rack, using styrene square bend and strips. I had no flimsy cans, so the Jerry cans will have to do.

I will glue down the stowage before painting. This will be a first for me, as I am always concerned about getting maximum paint coverage. I guess it is a matter of taste. We will see how it goes. . .

Holy Crap Russ...
This is going to be a beaut.
I've never seen rivets done that way before. Where did you pick that little tick up?
Myself I have to cut the rivets then glue them on or punch them out with my Walden punch.
I love the weathering too... well done Dude.
That stowage will be... fun... to paint.
It will look great though.

Coen,

Thanks for the "shot in the arm". I based the technique from reading Shepherd Paine's book, How To Build Military Vehicles. Next time (if I ever do rivets again) I'll be sure to draw in some sort of guide to live the rivet on. Some are pretty cock-eyed :)

I've changed up my stowage painting plan. I'll glue on the bracketed gear before painting; the other stowage will be painted individually then glued on. Don't feel like getting overspray or no spray in all the nooks :)

Shepard Pain, a god of modelling. I fell in love with his work back in the 80s when I found a book of his in the library... I think it may be the one you mentioned in fact. I got most of my diorama knowledge from him. Big fan of Steve Zaloga too.

Shepherd Paine is a remarkable model builder. If you get a chance, I posted a link on my Youtube channel in the about me section. It has a lot of his models and dioramas in it, as well as some nice biographical stuff about the man. I think it was a promotional website for the book that came out a few years back. I really wish he would build again. He stopped because he no longer had any fun in it. A real lesson for all of us builders.

Steven Zaloga has a discussion group on Missing-Lynx, an armor site. Not really a forum, but has lots of good stuff.

Great work man!!!

I'm having fun thoughts about that Universal Carrier bobbing around with all that stowage. Quite robust little buggers aren't they?

Will any figures dwarf that vehicle?

Exceptionally nice work, loving the rivets - adds to the character of the Universal Carrier brilliantly.

Thank you all for your comments. I really appreciate them. I didn't plan on adding any figures to the model. However, they do add a little something to the overall build. The kit did come with a crew of three. I'll think about using them. I might even build a small diorama. Endless possibilities.

Thanks Russ, I'll check the Shep Pain info out on your channel. I've been to the Missing-Lynx site, even had a brief chat with the man himself once about aircraft recognition tarps used by the allies in WWII.

Wow!! I just entered your name in my list of cool people  : : :

I'll be heading to the ipms nationals in a few weeks (just an hour drive from the homestead). I wonder if I'll meet any model celebrities. Maybe I should bring my autograph book.

Seriously, I am having some anxiety about going, as it is going to be crowded and crazy. The vendors area is going to be like the largest hobby shop in the world for four days. I'm starting to get overwhelmed.

I don't' know if I'm envious or not Russ.
I always get my nickers in a twist before the local show here... it's small and I know almost all of the entrants by name.
It's not affiliated with anything like IPMS or even a national group. Still it's enough to give me a night or two of dry eyed stares.

Mark Bannerman (just in case http://www.ospreypublishing.com/authors/Mark_Bannerman) lives here and he's made the odd appearance, but no one else famous.
I don't think that I'd have the balls to enter anything bigger.
Besides those shows are thousands of Kms away and I'm not going to travel that far just for a model show.

However... I can enjoy one by proxy... I hope you're going to take some pictures of yours.... Please

Coen,

Don't worry, I will be taking plenty of pics. I'll make a few videos on my channel once I get them all sorted. Darn! I should have gotten an ISM T-shirt or something to wear for the show. Nothing like a little PR.

This will be my first time at the ipms nationals. It was just dumb luck that the committee chose the Denver area. I highly doubt I will attend another anytime soon. I'm happy enough with the local and regional shows. I have been informed that Canada will be well represented this year. All right enough blah, blah, blah. . . .

This carrier has traveled far on my workbench. Might even be the slowest build ever :wall: I've used a lot of techniques and styles in this build, most of which are still pretty new to me. I think I have the basics of the oil dot filter technique down. I guess the pics will tell. I just wonder if weathering dust will subdue all that detail painting. We will see. Pics are more in focus now that I have learned more about what my camera can do. Thanks to all you guys who helped with this gizmo :)

Still playing around with the stowage arrangement.
Image

The dot filter technique really helps to break up the monochromatic look of the model.
Image

Oops, just noticed that I haven't painted the pioneering tools. Need to have good, effective tools for my crew!
Image

Added a chain. The rope just didn't do it for me. Maybe for another model.
Image

Still have plenty of stowage to add to the interior. . . coming soon.
Image

More pics to come . . . :hi:

One of my all time favourite Tankettes, I love the Bren gun carrier, British ingenuity at its best mate.
I brought this very kit but being a "Padawan" I haven't dared take it out the box yet.
Fantastic work my friend. Look forward to the finished build.

All right. I was in such a zone these past few weeks getting builds ready for the model show, I forgot to take pictures of the final steps towards completion  I will leave you all with these two teasers. You can see a full walk around in the gallery. Thanks for all the support and encouragement throughout this build. I really appreciate it!

There was a lot of detailing that I decided to skip, as I was pressed for time. I would have loved to have given some areas a pin wash, especially in the running gear. In the end, I just gave it a good pastel work over.

The bedrolls are tissue paper. I'm still a big fan of the wet tissue paper method. Still need to try the rolled putty method someday. The straps are made of electric tape which had its adhesive removed.
