I got an e-mail from Arma Models in Moscow last night - Zvezda have released the next in their series of 1/48 scale Mi-24 Hinds. This one is the Hind P (kit #4812) which has the fixed forward firing cannon in a hull blister on the forward fuselage rather then the underslung rotating chin cannon of the hind D/E. As always with Arma there is a special low price for those pre-ordering of 1990 Rubles (about £19.10). In addition they are doing their special deals on accessories to go with it - and this time they have gone overboard:

I am wondering if release #2 will be the Hind A with a parallel cockpit akin to the Huey Cobra???

Thats a huge deal.....No idea how much you would save by ordering individually and not going to try to work it out. Can't wait to see it in the postie section.
Certainly a bit more than the kit price by a huge margin too. Need a plan not to lose any bits

The prior release - Hind D/E - is incredibly nice. I would say the detail on it makes it a painters dream!! And this is basically the same kit, just a different front fuselage.

I may have mentioned this before but whenever I see a Hind I am always reminded of a line from Tom Clancy's The Cardinal of the Kremlin. Its partly set in Afghanistan during the Russian occupation and one of the Afghanis says, 'we are not afraid of the Russians but we are afraid of their helicopters.'

Any sane man would be. They are dangerously mean equipped with a lot of ordnance. Not to say the USA can't deliver a S...load of ordnance too, but the Russians manage to do it with workman like efficiency in their choice of machines.
I like the Hind it is a tank for the skies.

There is a section in the book "Afghantsy" that always cracks me up - it relates how the Mujahadeen worked out how much ordinance a Hind had before having to return to re-arm, set up dummy targets then launched the real attacks once the Hinds had left... The Russians, understandably, got a bit miffed about this so in true Russian style played the Muj at their own game. They removed the troop seats from the rear of the Hind and fitted reload racks. The Hinds then duly left - a short way - landed, rearmed and took off. Meantime the Muj launched their main attack only to find the FAC had called the re-armed Hinds back in so the now exposed Muj copped the lot. Effectively the 40th Army's version of the Great Marianas Turkey Shoot - only repeated many times till the Muj finally realised how those tricky Russians had out-sneaked them....
Did I ever mention I absolutely love Hinds???

Sneaky Russians....
Just reinforces the image of raw power these machines have. To be able to carry a double load of ordnance admittedly they took the place of any troops they might have carried.
Good stuff love those bit size bits of history.
