In Grim far future their is only War:40k Dio with a twist

Post by longlance67 »

Hiya All,

Here I go with yet another diorama one isnt enough for me or I'm just totally insane to have two on the go at once :wall: :nena:

I always been a big fan of the Warhammer 40k Universe though I dont play the game as it is too expensive for me, but I have gathered a large collection of Novels set in the Grim distance of the far future ;)

So the project is gonna be a Diorama with a twist...with my collection of novels always falling over on the shelf I decided to do something about it, so I'm gonna try to build some themed bookstops with dioramas depicting some scenes from the Universe of 40K :th:

For the first section I'm gonna try depict a Razor back APC crashed under rubble and members of the Ultramarines Chapter fighting their way past the wreck. Its the first time I have attempted create a wedgie with a tank before so it was a bit nerve destroying as I sawed the tank in half at a 40 degree angle :eeek:

Image

Image

of course it wouldnt be one of my builds unless I weather the balls the out of it, to simulate scratch and impacts I attacked the model with my dremel now to begin the chipping process

looking forward to this build as its something different :)

thanks

- Scalemodeller , It will be a fun project, I have an idea for a 1/35 project for my history books, I'm thinking of trying my own take on the classic rise and fall of the Reich style dio. It may be a project I might embark on depending on how successful this project goes :th:

Guppy - thanks buddy welcome aboard :)

A Brief Introduction to the grim world of 40k:

Image

"It is the 41st Millennium. For more than a hundred centuries the Emperor has sat immobile on the Golden Throne of Earth. He is the master of mankind by the will of the gods, and master of a million worlds by the might of inextinguishable armies. He is a rotting carcass writhing invisible with power from the dark age of technology. He is the Carrion Lord of the Imperium for whom a thousand souls are sacrificed daily so that he may never truly die.

Yet even in his deathless state, The Emperor continues his eternal vigilance. Mighty battlefleets cross the daemon-infested miasma of the wrap, the only route between distant stars, the way lit by the Astronomican, the psychic manifestation of the Emperor's will. Vast armies give battle in his name on uncounted worlds. Greatest amongst his soldiers are the Adeptus Astartes, the Space Marines, bio-engineered super-warriors. Their comrades in arms are legion: the Imperial Guard and countless planetary defense forces, the ever vigilant Inquisition and the tech-priests of the Adeptus Mechanicus to name only a few. But for all their multitudes, they are barely enough to hold off the ever-present threat from aliens, heretics, mutants - and worse.

To be a man in such times is to be one amongst untold billions. It is to live in the cruellest and most bloody regime imaginable. These are the tales of those times. Forget the power of technology and science, for so much has been forgotten, never to be re-learned. Forget the promise of progress and understanding, for in the grim dark future there is only war. There is no peace amongst the stars, only an eternity of carnage and slaughter, and the laughter of thirsting gods.
" - extract taken from novel

so there you have the basic introduction to the far future, hope you enjoyed the read

That sounds really cool I would really like to see a project like that mate

did a little more work on the APC or the last few days, as the machine belongs to the Ultramarines Chapter their colour is a cobalt blue, so I wanted to add a little modulation to the overall blue finish, though I'm not a big fan of extreme modulation as to me it seems to make the model look like a toy if it is over done. So I painted various panels and surfaces different shades of blue to add some subtle interest to the paint. I added a lot of chipping too before I sealed the model in gloss before adding the decals. GW's decals are well crap, high gloss and lots of excess film on the marking, so I used only the unit markings I needed.

Image

i raided the bits box for some spare decals to add some stenciling to various areas of the APC

after i seal everything with another coat of gloss, its on to the wash washes and pin washes

Hi all,

another quick update for yee :)

got the a heavy wash of Agrax Earthshade to give the APC a very grimy and worn feel, and made all the chipping sit down and blend with the base colour, really happy with it so far :)

also had a lucky find on the side of the road today, found a long sheet of blue foam undamged which I quickly snatched up hahaha now I have material for the diorama base ;)

Looks real good, how come you get all the luck finding diorama materials on the roadside - luck of the Irish I say ;) . Maybe I should pay more attention to items on the side of the road but then I suppose I would crash, besides the roads I drive down are just farmers hedges :x :th:

Hiya all,

been doing a bit more work on the APC, the Irish winter is being to bite, Its been 6 degrees Celsius at best and my shed becomes a little silly to work in, but nevertheless I preserved.....oh the things we do for our hobby :thumb2:

got some pigment work done, added some mig rust pigment to the exhaust stacks and housings, rust inst my strongest point but I gave it go any way, practice makes prefect

Image

the rust was a little too bright for me, so i tried to tune it down with some dark brown chalks which made it look a little better

Image

Some pin streaks were added with acrylic burnt umber, and the impacts were given some soot and scorch marks with black chalk

Image

Image

all what remains to be done is some dust effects, and then its on the best part the ground work and figures

stay tuned friends

Micheal - rust is super tricky for me to get used to, but its getting there, I really don't know how modelers who specialize in knocked out armor do it lol

thanks Lee :)

started the rough work on the base today :) the plan is to have the Razorback crashed through a building and partially buried in falling masonry. It will be fun to scratch build the building front and try to recreate the Gothic style architecture of the 40K world

First I did a mock up to get the size of the base down, I'm crap at just relying on sketches or just rough measurements when trying to figure out how big to the base and the positions of everything before gluing it all down

Image

once happy with the layout I began to work on detailing the building, brink work was scribed with a ball tipped pen, added basic battle damage with a hobby knife, will add windows and other fitting with plastic stock

Image

its beginning to take shape now

Thanks buddy, will be popping into town in the morning to pick up some balsa sheets for the dio bases, and see if there are any other goodies in the hobby shop I can use :th:

With the Razorback set aside and ready to be installed on the base, its time to turn attention to the figures that will make up the cast of this dio base, raiding the bits box I found some nice Guardsmen, I wanted to show soldiers of the Imperial Guard in my first dio over the warriors of the Space Marines for a few reasons, one being a practical reason as Space Marines tend to have some very rigid and lack motion without reposing while the Guardsmen have a natural pose to them. Also from a story point of view the millions of men and woman of the Imperial Guard are the reason for mankind's continual survival among the stars with their never ending bravery and sacrifice. So I like to think its a tribute to will of small humans in a much larger, colder Galaxy. Went off on a little geek rant there sorry lol

Image

Cadian Shock Troopers, The finest and most disciplines of the Guards regiments will be the leading cast members in this, The image above is my inspiration for my miniature Cadians, battered and laden with kit, so after raiding the bits box for gear I was pleased with this result

Micheal - they are some nice models just wish GW would give us some more natural poses to work with and I'd be very happy boy, that and add a few females into the Guard as they feature very strongly in the books and would be something different :th:

Guppy - my hat goes off to a fellow Guardsmen though I'm retired from the Emperors service  I can still remember painting my Cadian Shock back in the day when 20 dudes came in the box for 30euro not 10 for 20euro :wtf:

This is incredible! I would LOVE to do some of the 40K figures and tanks, they looks so awesome... too bad they're ridiculously expensive!! I want to make sure I'm comfortable with my technique before shelling out that kind of moollah, I really want to though!! Something to look forward to! Have you ever played Killzone? I can see an awesome video game dio in my very distant future.

Hey Mikey, If your looking to play 40k for cheap I would suggest maybe going onto ebay and seeing if anyone has put up armies they bought and are not wanting to play any more you might be able to get a good price on them, I've played Killzone yrs ago back when it was PS2 lol hahahha

Rob - thanks buddy, im still a little sick, but well enough to keep painting without worrying of coughing lol

Wappy - thanks man, ya the new work area is a little small, but have noticed that I seem to get more done less distractions I guess, dont know how you manage to juggle a pc screen on the same sized workspace...my hat goes off to you sir !! :thumb2:

Build Update:

Now settled into my new area got back to painting, starting work on the first of the Guardsmen the signals men carrying a Vox set. I wanted to go for a simple urban style colour setup that kinda summed up the Imperial Guards spartan approach to equipment. So a green drab battledress and beige body armor

Image

the BDU is painted with Citadel Death World Forest. And the fleshtone, armor and weapon with Vallejo Dark Flesh and German Camo beige

Image

the yellow bars on the rifle and back of the helmet are meant to energy gauges, once the yellow sets, ill try do a yellow, orange, red colour gradient to show the life of the battery cell, should look nice if i can pull it off

Image

next step is add chips to the weapon and armor and highlights :)

thanks for looking

Hiya All,

hope the winter flu's haven't taken the toll on you all, luckly the flu has began to ease of late thank god, so it back down to modelling

work on the vox operator is now more or less, just waiting on some pigments to finish them off, but I'll wait till all the figures are done and weather them together.

The figure was given some basic washes and highlights and his armor and helmet chipped and battered, also a weapon sling was added with tami tape.

Sounds like its gonna be a great diorama and as a modeler who likes painting 40k figures I'm looking forward to the finished result. True act of bravery sawing through the tank like that. Wishing you good luck on the build.

Just catching up with your work Shane and the work on the vehicle is fab. I want to paint one now and I'm loving watching the development of the diorama. Keep it up.
