MiG-15 1/72 Hobby Boss

Hi,

I bought and built this Easy Assembly Kit from Hobby Boss to practice painting, masking and simple washes.
It's like few parts and builds quick. Level of details as for easy kit that costs like 4-6 EUR (I paid 21 PLN for that) is quite good. I painted using Vallejo Model Air Silver paint (71063) & Gunze Sangyo Aqueous Red H3 paint (dilluted 1.5 : 1 paint to thinner ratio). Applied decals using Microscale SET & SOL + used Microscale GLOSS to secure paint layer.
For wash I used Winsoor 41 Vandyke Brown dilluted 1:10 with Talens White Spirit 090. Vandyke brown colour gives very nice dark brown colour that "falls" into black.
I've learned one important thing - don't use white spirit on clear parts otherwise the will get foggy (white spirit reacts with plastic and on clear parts it's really visible).

Well it doesn't look good, I made few construction mistakes, especially around cockpit window. But it's finished... In fact this is my first plane finished I've finished since 1990 ...

Yep, one of the most expensive lessons I learned

These Hobby Boss kits are really gread,because after less than 2 hours you can start practice painting

Ha, if it wasn't a 4EUR model I would probably burn all the modelling stuff I have yesterday with all this Mil Mi-4 issues (good news - the paint dried and went back to its position ) and compressor breakdown

But this was a training kit and in fact I do like the look of the model... But I think that VMA Silver is good, but it's very soft and sensible... I found few places it was ripped off when I was working on wash... So I'm looking for some more solid acrylic based solution... any tips ?

The link Paul provided gives a good choice of alternatives to Model Air

Just to clarify - Model Air metallic paints spray well but in my hands always seem to react badly to clear coats (i've found that they dull and even discolour the paint). Vallejo themselves recommend not adding a varnish over them. An extract from a FAQ on their site follows:

"6.3. Should I varnish the water-based Metallics in the Model Air line?
Some of the metallic colors in the Model Air range are made with aluminum and copper-zinc alloys, which will not rust in a water base, but the metal in these colors will only be dulled by applying a varnish, and these colors are best not be varnished at all. The aluminum and copper-zinc alloy pigmented colors which are better not varnished are the Model Air references from 71.062 to 71.068. The Model Air iridescent colors reference numbers 71.69-71.073. can be varnished; varnish will enhance them."
