Sabre VII engine walkaround

Again, in the continuation of my visit to the museum I thought I would post this out of the ordinary walk around... being an engine used quite often in WW II and in many populars kits. May be it would help someone to detail it. Enjoy !

Lovely pictures of what was the most powerful inline aircraft piston engine ever built, albeit its a H24.

This version produced 3500hp, the last versions were producing around 5500hp although I don't think these entered service. The were other engines in the same power class PW R4360 as fitted in the B50 and B36 which was developed from the R2800 as fitted in the P47. But these engines required nearly twice the displacement, thus were physically bigger and heavier.

The Sabre H24's were a bit problematic when first introduced, mainly I believe due to the sleeve valve cooling in the rear cylinders, which made them unreliable. This engine pushed material technology beyond their the limits the time, the problems were overcome. But by the time they got to producing 5500hp the jet engine was on the scene.

Fitted to the Typhoon and later Tempest aircraft, with luck we should see a Typhoon again at some point in the future

Interesting to see out in the open like that. I love the way they have opened her up with even the smallest of cut a ways to expose the internals in the manner they have.
It is a seriously big deal to replicate in any scale....great pic's.
