My input here is underwhelming...I have 3 un-started kits, 2 models at various stages of completion and then some miscellaneous figures. Does that even count as a stash? I certainly hope I have enough life left for me to finish them all! I buy to build - I find that when the urge to build a particular subject rears it's head, the shopping is part of the fun. I'd much rather that than simply open a cupboard and take out the kit I want.

1. How large is your stash of kits?
My current stash is 56 model kits, and 77 individual figures or figure kits, along with some detail kits, scratch building materials, and greeblies collection.

2. Is it complete? Is it getting larger or does it need some thinning?
The stash is (unfortunately) still growing (mostly figures), but it could also use some thinning-- I have maybe 8 model kits and perhaps a dozen figures I wouldn't mind finding a new home for.

3.Why a big stash? Why a small stash? Which is better?
While my stash is nowhere near as large as other stashes I've seen, I consider it to be a big stash. The reason it got to be big is that I keep finding kits or figures that interest me, or I keep having ideas for dioramas or vignettes, and collect the kits necessary to build them, and at this point in my life, I am able to afford the kits I want. While a large stash provides me with a lot of choices when I'm trying to decide what to build next, sometimes the sheer number of choices can lead to indecision and "modeler's block" :wall: , which often leads to new modeling ideas popping into my head, and the purchasing of even more kits for the stash. I like having a large (to me) stash, because I like seeing my stash on the shelves around me, and thinking about how I might build each of the kits, but I think a smaller stash would probably be better for me to actually get more models built.

4.At your present rate of yearly building, do you have enough life left to build all your stash?
: If I were to stop buying kits today, and focus on what I already have in the stash (and not lose too much more of my physical abilities to aging) I could probably just about get through what's in my stash, leaving finished models, rather than kits, for whomever it falls to to dispose of my personal belongings.

5.Do family / friends buy models for you?
Nope.

1. How large is your stash of kits?
I "think" mine is in the region of 35 kits. Primarily helicopters - at least 6 of those are Mi-24 Hinds. This does not include all the various "enhancement packages" such as PE, decals, weapons packages etc.

2. Is it complete? Is it getting larger or does it need some thinning?
Growing - much to the wifes annoyance. Can't honestly say it needs thinning yet although that day might come. In fairness the initial surge is over - I have most of what I want and more would have been built by now if not for the Great Upheaval(still sorting the boxes to free the room designated for crafts). It grows as things interest me or I need a subject for one of the themed builds. Which can, in turn, generate interest...

3.Why a big stash? Why a small stash? Which is better?
I think myself the size of a stash is purely a personal thing - your stash will be the size you are happy with. I don't think there is a "too big" or "too small" aspect to it - although I guess wives and partners might have diametrically opposed views....

4.At your present rate of yearly building, do you have enough life left to build all your stash?
Ooohhh - not sure I want to tempt fate at my age answering that!!
Seriously though, once I finally give up working I should be OK to finish what I have plus a few besides. And if I go before then - its someone else's problem or someone else's good fortune as, apart from a certain Lancaster, the wife has NO idea how much the kits cost.....

5.Do family / friends buy models for you?
My daughter has been known to now and then. The wife? NEVER!!

Ooh, another great set of questions from the Twokids. Potential for a bit of contention maybe?

    1. How large is your stash of kits?

As of this morning it stands at 31. It has built up over the last 6 years since I came back to the hobby. There was an initial splurge as I discovered new manufacturers, online stores and model shows. Since then it has grown mostly due to new releases that have caught my eye along with visits to my local non-franchise store where I feel obligated to buy a kit to support the vendor.

    2. Is it complete? Is it getting larger or does it need some thinning?

No way is it complete! As long as manufacturers release new awesome kits then it will increase. Hopefully I can build at the same rate to keep it on the level. I only buy kits I plan to build so I would only look to thin the stash If I financially needed to.

3.Why a big stash? Why a small stash? Which is better?

Personally a targeted stash works for me. I am not a collector, nor an investor (and I have a dim view of the latter). My stash has come into being because kits have become available or spotted by me that I want at a faster tempo than I build at. Simples. Hand on heart, with 2 exceptions, I want to build them all. The 2 exceptions are the 1/72 Airfix B17 and Lancaster. I started the Lanc and realised 1/72 just isn't for me anymore.

4.At your present rate of yearly building, do you have enough life left to build all your stash?

Yes, unless I get hit by a bus in the next 5 years or so.

5.Do family / friends buy models for you?

Family do, absolutely. Christmas this year will almost certainly see the Das Werk 1/16 Stug 3 nestled nicely under the tree. As for friends, not so much - although I do count some of my friends as true enablers! Whenever I talk about a kit I am mulling over buying, the response is always, go on, do it!! I also have a mate who builds kits and he and I are always discussing new releases and the resultant wallet pressure! We like the same stuff (mostly) and we get our kicks from various sources when it comes to new releases, whether its a weekly email from an online store covering their new stock or Andy's Hobby HQ on Youtube. Both sources regularly crumble my feeble resistance!

    1. How large is your stash of kits?
I had a quick count up and it's about 64 kits of what I think of as "main subjects" so AFVs, Aircraft etc and like Panzon already mentioned that doesn't include various figure sets, diorama bases or accessories. The composition is roughly made up of the following in descending order of quantities: AFVs (1/35, 1/48 & 1/72), Aircraft (1/48 & 1/72), Sci Fi, cars x 6 (1/24 & 1/20) & battleship x 1 (1/350) Edit: Just found an old Airfix 1/144 Saturn V lurking under a pile of jigsaw puzzles in the spare room so that's another one to the count.
    2. Is it complete? Is it getting larger or does it need some thinning?
There are always new kits that draw my eye or older kits that are getting harder to get hold of that I'm often tempted to pick up when I see them at a reasonable price. The biggest problem I have is that I'm running out of places to store them so I've started getting much stricter with myself on buying new kits (don't think I've bought anything new this year as yet). I do have space out in the garage but really don't want to go down that black hole it would be a case of out of sight, out of mind. I thinned things out a few year back by donating some kits to MfH but all that really did was create space to get filled again :)
3.Why a big stash? Why a small stash? Which is better?
There is no right or wrong about this - your stash is your choice. And for me there have been a few contributing factors over the seven or so years since I started building again - kits that I remember as a kid and wanted to revisit (nostalgia), new kits that I like the look of and want to get hold of before they go out of production, subjects that I like, and stuff that family have bought for me as Christmas/Birthday presents.
4.At your present rate of yearly building, do you have enough life left to build all your stash?
Not at the rate I've built this year! I've completed one kit and am partway through the second - but this has been a really slow year for me. Normally I'd expect to get through about six builds a year so all being well, yes I should be able to get through the current stash if it wasn't added to... but again the problem is lack of space to display everything if it was built.
5.Do family / friends buy models for you?
Yes - once family found out I was back building models again this has become a regular addition to Birthday & Christmas gifts; sometimes they'll buy something from my wish list but there have been some random additions over the years too - all of which have been gratefully received as it has sometimes opened up subjects I wouldn't have naturally tried out
    Cheers, Neil

Kinda embarrassing after reading the previous answers . Scalemates says 481, but probably more like 475   and 356 other bits and pieces such as barrels, PE and the like.

It is incomplete cause I keep seeing new kits and going ohhh I gotta get that. Occasionally I get in and sell a small number off. I think it is the box art sucking me in and convincing me I can make it just like that  I'm under a ultimatum that everything has to fit and stay in my cave so that has been a concern. Now I've got room for 2 more shelves and then I'll have to breath carefully when I enter. ;)

I never started off with the idea of having a big stash. It just grew when I got excited over a new kit plus there is that old bug bear of things going out of production and hard to get so I had better grab it while I can and if the price is good I'm a gonna grab it.

No life left at all. I'll need life prolonging drugs and rejuvenation therapy for the next 100yrs. However I do realize I shall have to have a big sell off at some point, but not yet. In the mean time I shall enjoy them occasionally opening the box lid and looking through the clear plastic bags.

My family won't buy kits or even a gift card. My wife occasionally goes off the deep end about how many kits I have. Hell though if it keeps me sane, out of depression, out of alcoholic establishments and less grumpy then it's a good thing right ?

    1. How large is your stash of kits?
I’ve just had a quick count and have surprised myself as I “only” have 14 kits in my stash…….however this doesn’t include figures, vignettes, buildings and general bits and bobs that I can’t seem to be able to resist buying.

    2. Is it complete? Is it getting larger or does it need some thinning?
It will never be complete, I try to restrict myself but keep getting emails from places selling new things!!
I have some things in my stash that I may never build as I’m honestly worried about messing them up!

3.Why a big stash? Why a small stash? Which is better?
Each to their own of course depending on inclination and funds, I tend to buy after I finish something else so the stash tends to stay around the same size.

4.At your present rate of yearly building, do you have enough life left to build all your stash?
As the others have said, hopefully I’ll have more than enough time!

5.Do family / friends buy models for you?
Not really, although last birthday, I ordered myself a few kits and my wife claimed them to give to me as her present!

These are good questions and some interesting answers already!

    1. How large is your stash of kits?

Around 90-ish kits, those are just the boxes. A lot of the Warhammer 40k stuff has multiple units per box. I also have basically the entire Tamiya acrylics range... and about 180 other paint bottles, pigments, effects, etc. +75 Citadel paints.

    2. Is it complete? Is it getting larger or does it need some thinning?

Not complete, they keep coming out with cool kits I want. It is growing; but, I've sort of stopped buying kits for a while. The 3d printer is belting out minis though. I've started to thin out some of the older kits I know I will never build. When I was buying a lot of kits I started to only buy high quality kits. Nothing is worse than having a terrible kit take the fun out of the hobby.

3.Why a big stash? Why a small stash? Which is better?

Either has their merits. I personally tend towards a bigger stash. When the mojo is low, I have a wide selection of stuff to build and I don't even need to go to the hobby store.

4.At your present rate of yearly building, do you have enough life left to build all your stash?

    Yes.

5.Do family / friends buy models for you?

All the time. It's sort of their go to for presents. This also includes hobby accessories like airbrushes, paints, etc.

    1. How large is your stash of kits?
I'm the odd duck of the bunch. I have 5 kits in my stash. There was a time, when I was 16 or 17, that my local shop went out of business and sold everything cheap. I had quite a few models then and found that my build quality dropped trying to bust out kits. Before and after that I generally bought a new kit when I finished the one I had. My stash now is made up of 3 kits that I've bought, one a friend bought for me and one my wife and kids gave me.

    2. Is it complete? Is it getting larger or does it need some thinning?
Right now it will stay the size it is. I'm always seeing kits I'm tempted to buy though and completely understand how a stash can grow to be large.

3.Why a big stash? Why a small stash? Which is better?
Not for me to say. I'll leave it to others to decide what they should have.

4.At your present rate of yearly building, do you have enough life left to build all your stash?
I don't want to be a Donnie Downer but the fact is that for the last 2 years it's been quite likely that I wouldn't be here today. My last treatment has seemed to be working so the answer is, yes?

5.Do family / friends buy models for you?

    Family - yes

    1. How large is your stash of kits?

117 kits, or 13, 221 parts (not to include after-market), or approximately 23.438 years of building

    2. Is it complete? Is it getting larger or does it need some thinning?

Define complete (also meaning never...). They have not individually gained any additional weight since I bought them (still physically fit) so they do not need to thin down. Also don't use the word "thinner" as I am real conscious of my thinning hair and gaining weight that comes with your 60's.

3.Why a big stash? Why a small stash? Which is better?

Honestly I have a thick goatee, not just a stash. Why, because my wife likes it, most likely because it covers more of my face so she doesn't have to see me. It is always better to keep the wife happy.

4.At your present rate of yearly building, do you have enough life left to build all your stash?

Well considering the stash is never complete, it is very doubtful I will ever complete them all. Being 62 and adding another 23.438 years over 85. If I have more of my mother genes than my fathers... they will get done, but no guarantee on the build standards by that age. As I said at the beginning, define complete?

5.Do family / friends buy models for you?

Well the last time they bought a model for me she popped out of a cake. The time before that she was dressed as a police officer and well you know where it goes from there. Seriously, the last time they bought me any kind of model was around 15 years ago as the "stash" was not as mature. Now they think I have too many models so I doubt I will ever see another gifted to me.

Re: Friday Question #5: All about a stash

    Post by Twokidsnosleep »

Ok Sunday night and my turn
This question set is a loaded gun for me :?

    1. How large is your stash of kits?
Scalemates.com says I have 215 kits listed in my inventory
These are stored over three locations
I am sure I have not told Scalemates about some kits…likely ones I have forgotten about

    2. Is it complete? Is it getting larger or does it need some thinning?

It is getting larger and needs some thinning for sure
Interesting thing I have noticed about me and buying kits:
First I have a pretty wide spectrum of topic interests which works against me
Second I Get excited over certain topic or a new release or have an idea to research out for a suitable kit. Buy stuff for it, then pack it away and forget it. Have more to do projects than I know what to do with and little time to do them

Third when stressed at work, I sometimes find an e bay kit as my reward to ‘make it through the day’. Very much a mental game/dopamine sooth/ anxiety reduction coping mechanism. I bought two drag cars last week like this. I suppose this is better than booze or drug use

Fourth I GO to LHS for paint or something simple and feel I want to support the shop so find something to buy kit wise

Lastly….box art gets me. And all the super cool new topics!!!!

3.Why a big stash? Why a small stash? Which is better?

I kind of answered that above.
Nice to have a big stash to go choose something from it when you want. Sucks as guilty about buying any more kits. Nice to have the kit on hand and not pay a higher price or not be able to find such a kit later. Sucks when you forget why you bought something.
I do not buy two of the same kits typically. Not collecting or stashing for sale later, I consider myself a builder.
    Definitely a styrene junkie

4.At your present rate of yearly building, do you have enough life left to build all your stash?

Uhh, not likely. Scary to think that way

5.Do family / friends buy models for you?
Never. I have too many models, so no way would they buy me anything
Usually buy myself a Christmas model and wrap it from Santa. This year will be a big Lancaster if it arrives on time :D

    1. How large is your stash of kits?
I cannot truly answer this right now (I'm at work). I will guess 10 un-started kits. **UPDATE** I checked Scalemates. I indeed have 10 un-started kits. However, I have 12 that I have started.

    2. Is it complete? Is it getting larger or does it need some thinning?
I am always looking to add but not for the sake of collecting. Right now I am adding at the same rate of building.

3.Why a big stash? Why a small stash? Which is better?
To each his/her own. If I see a kit I want, I buy it. The quantity of kits in my stash is never a concern. For a collector I imagine larger is better. But I can see how someone might only collect certain brands or subjects which would mean a smaller stash might be in order.

4.At your present rate of yearly building, do you have enough life left to build all your stash?
If I keep buying and building, I will not run out of kits to build.

5.Do family / friends buy models for you?
I have been gifted a couple kits. But I mostly buy my own.

Completely missed this one on Friday... and was away from the forum for the weekend. So,

    1. How large is your stash of kits?

About 40-50'ish. I don't count the ones I have as that would give credence to my "better half's" argument.
It's like I tell her though, I only buy ones that need to be "put together..." ;)

    2. Is it complete? Is it getting larger or does it need some thinning?

It will never be complete, and it needs bulking up - not thinning out.

3.Why a big stash? Why a small stash? Which is better?

Big stash. It's my "compensation". It's the stash or a humongous 4-wheel drive truck. :o

4.At your present rate of yearly building, do you have enough life left to build all your stash?

Doubt it... and I've already given specific instructions to both my kids not to chunk'em in the garbage. They both know how to "pass" them along. :thumb2:

5.Do family / friends buy models for you?

Not yet. If any one needs my address though, just shoot me a PM. :D

    Stats
My stash isn't too big, but it isn't tiny either. Most of them are here.
    Image

According to Scalemates, I have 47 kits in total.
    Maturity
I'm not sure how it could ever be complete? I have about 19 kits on my wishlist, but many of them will never see my bench (or shelf). I am happy with the size of my stash. It fits where I have space and I have plenty of variety.
    Size
Building models and buying models are two separate hobbies! Plus, some kits can actually appreciate in value, so it could be considered an investment!
    Longevity
I started modeling about 5 years ago. In that time I have built about 36 kits. So my average build rate is 1.7 months per kit. Using my average speed it will take me about 7 years to complete my stash without buying anything new. Given my current age, this is an attainable goal. Even if I buy the kits on my wishlist I can finish in less than a decade. I should be good for 57 years old!
    Purchasing
Sometimes, if I tell them what to buy. I used to have some kits on an Amazon wishlist, but I have removed them for stash size reasons. My current Not Now, John build was gifted by a dear friend. I hope I am doing right by his generosity.

    1. How large is your stash of kits?
Too much to count exactly the number of boxes, add on, etc ... Hundreds and hundreds, it's still grow but very slowly (phew!).

    2. Is it complete? Is it getting larger or does it need some thinning?

Larger with some few kits (Matchbox) and some feeling for some kits. Maybe i'll resale some of the them sometimes.

3.Why a big stash? Why a small stash? Which is better?
A big because i'm single and modelling is a passion.

4.At your present rate of yearly building, do you have enough life left to build all your stash?
Surely not, but who cares (do i? NO, absolutely NO!) :nena:

5.Do family / friends buy models for you?
No, only personal purchases (but 2-3 of them by my ex girlfriend).

That's it guys, i hope i can read all the comments, it'll be so interesting! :thumb2:

    1. How large is your stash of kits?
66 full kits according to Scalemates, I've got lots of aftermarket bits and bobs too, and lots of paint and tools. I'm looking to move house in the next few months with a proper cave set up, so if that comes off the stash may increase.

    2. Is it complete? Is it getting larger or does it need some thinning?

Not complete no, always on the lookout for new kits, detail parts, decals etc.

3.Why a big stash? Why a small stash? Which is better?
Big because I could never afford the kits I wanted when I was younger, but now I can treat my 14 year old self and pay him back.

4.At your present rate of yearly building, do you have enough life left to build all your stash?
I certainly hope so, I buy all my kits to build.

5.Do family / friends buy models for you?
No, I like to buy all my own stuff, and tell them not to bother.

    1. How large is your stash of kits?
58 kits, all different scales and of course mostly Armour.
    2. Is it complete? Is it getting larger or does it need some thinning?
It needs thinning now, i really can't buy anymore kits. I want to but I really should curtail. I morbidly thought the other day, if i dropped down dead tomorrow, what would Mrs DW do with the all?
3.Why a big stash? Why a small stash? Which is better?
Neither better, its an individual thing.
4.At your present rate of yearly building, do you have enough life left to build all your stash?
Nope, no way.
5.Do family / friends buy models for you?
Mrs DW has bought for me, but when she "Noses" into M/C I think she's reluctant to buy anymore

    Hello
don't know what happened but my post didn't work.... so let's answer again ! But first let's thank Scott for an another great question.

    1. How large is your stash of kits?

My stash is around 70 kits plus a few extras to go with a few of them. It was pretty much smaller before COVID... but being working from home full time since then (teleworking in English ??), I have more time to build and more time to get tempted on the internet to buy things. Before Covid I was at may be 40 kits max.

    2. Is it complete? Is it getting larger or does it need some thinning?

Well yes and no !! It needs some thinning because I don't have much more space to store them. But also don't have much more space left to display them. Currently looking at solutions for that point.
And it also needs thinning because it's a lot for the rate I'm building. Currently trying to build a bit more faster and being more organized. That's why I'm currently thinking of building myself a new desk to have a bit more space when building as I get clustered easily.
It also needs to get larger because they are a few kits that really badly want like Tamiya's F14 or Phantom or F16, or ICM's Heinkel or Dornier, Revell's Ju52, Kitty Hawk's Vodoo and a few others

3.Why a big stash? Why a small stash? Which is better?

I think this is pretty personal to everyone. You see guys with hundreds of kits in their stash... don't think anyone could have time building all them except if you're alone and only do that of your time. As for me, with the time I have at hand I think it's good enough.

4.At your present rate of yearly building, do you have enough life left to build all your stash?

Well I hope so. As I said, currently trying to be more efficient and organized. And my stash isn't that big. Still consider my self young (44). But still don't have much time at hand for modeling as it's shared with work, work around the house, blackjack and the kids. My son is only 7 so he still needs "attention" for a few years !

5.Do family / friends buy models for you?

My girlfriend doesn't and doesn't want too as she thinks my stash is big enough well before COVID ! so the last few kits were hid from her  But she will instead buy me gift certificates or tools.
As for the rest family it happens but rarely
    Francis

Re: Friday Question #5: All about a stash

    Post by Kevthemodeller »

    1. How large is your stash of kits?
    Too big.........124 kits

    2. Is it complete? Is it getting larger or does it need some thinning?
It's still slowly growing but it really needs thinning

3.Why a big stash? Why a small stash? Which is better?
Big as it fun finding and buying them, more choice, downside cost and space

4.At your present rate of yearly building, do you have enough life left to build all your stash?
    Nope :shhh:

5.Do family / friends buy models for you?
    Not usually.
