Messerschmitt Me-410B-2/U4 | Meng | 1:48

[Parker]

The Messerschmitt Me-410, nicknamed the Hornisse (Hornet), was a German heavy fighter and Schnellbomber used by the Luftwaffe during WWII. It was developed from the Me-210 and fitted with a more powerful Daimler-Benz DB 603A engine which greatly improved its flight performance. A BK5 50mm cannon was added to the Me-410B-2/U4, which greatly enhanced the combat capabilities.

It was called “Bomber Killer”.

Awful in dogfights and was easily taken out by the Spitfires & P-51s, however, the 50mm cannon would’ve put the fear of God into any B-17 pilot.

Resisted the temptation of buying the same kit at my local hobby store having already 2 in my hands Can't wait to see the build. Concentrate on moving ! it's a lot of work ! I did it a year ago and still have some work to do on it

Thanks for the welcome back fellas. I’ve been looking in occasionally. I’d safely say all of the current WIP’s & reveals on the forum are truly stunning. I’m still not tempted to try a tank though.

So…

First tentative steps at the cockpit. Interesting set up.
The weapons bay is to the underside of the front cockpit. This set up causes it to be very fiddley to hold whilst fitting the various parts. Several moments of ‘oh for gods sake’ as I fumbled it, bits coming off, bits moving, etc. But, I got there in the end. I’ll let it sit for a day or so before returning to it to dry brush/chip/scratch to add detail to the different elements in the cockpit.

I really like your planes Parker. Don't shy away from tanks though. The nice thing about them is you can't F them up. You might not get exactly what you're going for but that's just part of every model's learning experience for me.

Nice start Parker. Can't wait to see how it goes together. It's a an original plane. And as I said, I almost bought it the same day you posted the first time. Since then, I heard good and bad things about how it fits. So keep us posted.

Managed to get a couple of hours in last night after an almighty screaming session from the 4-year-old. Honestly, he was really hitting the high notes. Quite impressive tbh. My fault. During the move I chucked out some toys he hadn’t played with in over a year, well, guess which toys he was looking for yesterday.

Anyway. An update.

Started scratching up the front and rear cockpit components and dabbed a few red blobs about the place. Front cockpit is still fiddly as a few of the parts are quite delicate. I left the rear cockpit elements on the sprue to paint and scratch, much easier.

Zoomed in it all looks a bit agricultural, but you get the idea.
From further away, it looks OK to me.

I’ll assemble the rear cockpit tonight, assuming junior doesn’t suddenly remember something else I might have binned.

And yep if the mojo is lacking then there's no point in forcing it and winding yourself up - take your time and the bench (or dining table) will be waiting when you're ready.

Happy New Year folks.
Hope you all had a good one. I personally was asleep at 11pm.

So, with a bit of time off work I decided to dust off the Messerschmitt.
First up was getting the cockpit finished and fitted. Fairly straightforward. Only really fiddly part was the canopy, which in Mengs wisdom was assembled in 7 different parts.

I spent a bit of time painting & weathering the BK5 cannon, so it looked cool, only to then realise that other than the barrel, it wont be seen. She’s all closed up now and I’ve started on the engines. If you wanted to, the engines could also be weathered, detail painted, etc, but as they’re also going to be covered in I’m simply going to paint them black.

Not entirely sure if I’ve got the mojo back but it’s a start.

Looking promising No precut masking sheets for you either...gone old school. I can never get a real clean cut even with a new blade I always seem to get a section where the blade doesn't go right through or far enough into the corners and then it tears removing the waste.

Started on the decals. The Meng kit gives you two German options & a Soviet option.
I don't have any Soviet planes in the collection so I've gone with that.








next up will be trying to do the swirly decal on the propellers. I've never managed to do it before, always ends up torn or folded up in a crumpled mess. crosses fingers.

Overall, not a bad model. Fit was very good throughout.
