1. How do you display them?

At the moment all I've got is a wall unit - house is still a bombshell. So much so that the helicopters are still boxed. Plans are for some "glass" cases for the build room.

2. Do you make dioramas or bases for your builds ?

Never used to - but I did one for the T-34 build and liked the idea so I plan on doing some more. Got plans for one with a 1/72 Lancaster and a 1/32 Mil Mi24E

3. Do you keep all of the models you build?
Sell them/ trash them?

Keep. Definitely keep. Memories and all that!!

4. Show us your display case

This was a selfish diatribe as I am running out of space for my built kits and wanted to see how others deal with theirs
I fear a purge of some stuff will be necessary soon despite new shelves being made

    1. How do you display them?
They are all over the place. Model desk, ikea cabinet in model room, shelf in a reading area, my downstairs workshop and in my office at work
    2. Do you make dioramas or bases for your builds ?
Personally I love a completed model to be on a base, vignette or in a full dio so that a more complete story is told. Storage space becomes an issue however.
    3. Do you keep all of the models you build?
So far yes, but will need to trash some
    Sell them/ trash them?
Who in their right mind would buy this junk?? I like the process of building and finishing and then the model loses its lustre for me.
    4. Show us your display case
Ok hold on tight it gets messy

    1. Office just after a fresh painting. I rotate my newer builds in and out of these IKEA cabinets
    Image

    2. Downstairs workshop, currently the dog’s lair🙄 I built some shelving with mind to hold large 1/8 Pocher cars
    Image

    3. Reading area upstairs. Just stuffed some on the bookshelf
    Image

    4. The Nerd Lab. Another glass cabinet and then some desk shelving. Darn messy in here

    Image

The model desk shelving. Constantly changing items on and in there
    Image

    Image

As we ditch the Covid protocols, I am going to take the clear acrylic barriers at the front desk and make some shelves in the corners of the Nerd Lab to house some builds

    1. How do you display them?

In a case or on a shelf.

    2. Do you make dioramas or bases for your builds ?

Bases a bit. I want to get more into it.

    3. Do you keep all of the models you build? Sell them/ trash them?

Keep them as of now. I will always keep the first couple I built getting back into the hobby just to remind me of how far I've come. The others, whenever I move, I will probably donate to a local hobby store or museum. I'll still keep the really nice ones.

    4. Show us your display case

    Okay!

Shot of the display wall of the man cave. Everything is activated via voice and Google Home. You can see a bit of my Star Wars nerdery and my tiny book shelf.

    Image

First display case is my Star Wars stuff and some tanks.

    Image

Second is most of my aircraft that won local competitions or just stuff I like. Plus the first Warhammer 40k Start Collecting box of Tau. Bayonets are from a K31 and the M1 Garand early 16 inch bayonet my buddy got for me.

    Image

Here are the dioramas and the U-Boat from the group build. Plus a lot of the Warhammer 40k figures I've made. The bayonet and magazine are from a STGW-57, which even living in the US I will never be able to own.

    How do you display
In or on a display cabinet.
Do you make dioramas or bases
Occasionally, it does add to the storage requirements.
    Keep or not
I give away many of my models. I will keep the rest.

Hi everyone, it appears that this Diatribe has not gotten the attention (responses) of the previous ones (so far). I have to admit that when first reading the subject line telling us to "Display Yourself", I was a little concerned about opening the string :wtf:

Initially I was thinking, sure you want me to display myself now after my Covid weight gain. Then I started thinking of the pose I wanted to share with the ISM forum members that wouldn't be too shocking or embarrassing for everyone

Seriously, once I saw that it was about modeling displays I was eager to reply and show my "STUFF".

    1. How do you display them?

For me it depends on the modeling subject. For example, if it is aircraft I try to display most of mine in the air. So I use 10lb test clear fishing line. If they are not in the air, then I often display them on a stand appearing to be in flight. I have just a couple resting on the tarmac, but they are very small 1/144 scale (A-10). Because I am married with children (all older now), I have been put on orders to only display them hanging in the basement, nothing on the main living floor.

Likewise if it is an armor piece I often like to display them in their natural environment so it would be something like a terrain or urban display.

I am still rather new (sort of) to ship building but I have built them in displays to include a water setting (USS Arizona and Jet Ski), on the hull (Titanic), on a wood plinth (HMS Roberts); or on brass stands on a black laminate stand (IJN Yamato).

    Image

All of my recent figures are on a wooden base and under glass domes.

    Image

    Image

Most of my automobiles I build are kept in a glass or clear plastic case/cover, in bookcases, or in an enclosed entertainment system display. I also have several in several display cases. Two of them are large display cases I got free from a hobby store that went out of business. A few are in their own dioramas.

    Image

    Image

    Image

Another is an old modular entertainment system that surrounds a large screen TV while others are shown in some cheaper bookcases.

    Image

    Image

Heck I've even built some model kits where the model itself is the display.

    Image

    2. Do you make dioramas or bases for your builds ?

Yes, sometimes (see above). Like many here, I've been building models for nearly 55 years. In the 70's and 80's I would be inspired by the Shepard Payne or Verlinden dioramas. I dabbled back then in some but never really sustained building true displays. I have to say that for the early years I simply built the kit and went to the next one. Over the last 10-15 years I've tried in earnest to display the model in what I would vision as a natural setting. And that is when my interest in modeling displays really began. While still a novice compared to many, I feel like I'm progressing in that part of the hobby.

    3. Do you keep all of the models you build?

I mostly keep them unless they are purposely built for some place or somebody. I have given several way in hopes to spark interest in the hobby. I've built around 25 or so on comission for three different hobby shops to display in the stores and around 10 for two different museums. Some of them included the whole 1/24 MPC and Airfix aircraft line; a 1/48 B-17 Memphis Bell from Monogram, and one of my favorites was a 1/16 Gullows stick and paper build of a F4U Corsair. I skinned it with Xerox clear topographic plastic sheet normally used for old overhead projectors and added panel lines with rivets. It also had a complete scratch build cockpit and landing gear enclosures. There were a few I gave to veterans who had experience with the 1:1 scale item of the model I built, such as a 1/72 B-52; 1/18 57 Buick; 1/48 F-106 Delta Dart; M60A3 MBT; 1/48 F-100 Super Sabre; and large scale Apollo rocket.

    Sell them/ trash them?

I have sold several over the years but mostly keep them; unless they were for consignment to individuals, stores, museums, or to Vets. For three years in the military, while stationed in West Germany, I built an entire set of 1/72 modern armor for both NATO (American, British, German, French, etc.) and OPFOR (mostly Russian) that our S-2 (Intelligence) team used for "friend and foe" recognition during classes. That was also the time I built several kits for other officers such as the large scale Revell USS Constitution, and the 1/32 Revell/Monogram F-14 and F-15 kits.

I've only trashed perhaps two over the hundreds built simply because they got damaged beyond the ability to repair them. Oops! I forgot the 20-30 I destroyed that were 1/72 old Airfix armor kits that suffered ballet damage when I was a child. I ended up setting up a battle scene on the the side of a hill in the yard and then went into the second story window with a BB gun and traded shots to eventually destroy them all! :pistols:

    4. Show us your display case

To avoid being redundant, see above. There are others, but nothing ultra remarkable.

    Awesome @DRUMS01
We are kindred spirits trying to set a model into natural condition to tell a story.
Some absolutely amazing modelling there, really impressive, fantastic!
Thanks for showing it all …and thanks for not showing all of you😉

I've spotted your problem. Bad building design there's way too many windows. It's robbing the available shelf space and limiting the stash storage space. I think you have to buy a set of those loft stairs to go up or retire to the basement right next to the heating system....... ;)

    1. How do you display them?
They are scattered around the house on various shelves and in a couple of cabinets alongside other stuff.
    2. Do you make dioramas or bases for your builds ?
I love creating dioramas and think they bring a subject to life, although I do get bogged down sometimes trying to figure stuff out. But yeah they take up much more shelf space than a model by itself so I'm trying to rein myself in a bit.
    3. Do you keep all of the models you build? Sell them/ trash them?
I don't think I've trashed anything since I returned to the hobby yet as I like to keep the older stuff to remind me of where I started, but I do have a couple of candidates when shelf space becomes really tight.

I can't imagine selling any of them - who would want to buy them??

    1. How do you display them?

On top of book cases and on cheap plastic shelving racks in the den. I used to put stuff on any available surface but it was getting silly! I bought some cheap storage from Wickes and that does for most of my kits, built and unbuilt.

    2. Do you make dioramas or bases for your builds ?

Only rarely, it has to be a subject that really appeals like my Band Of Brothers Sharman with all the paratroopers sitting on it.

    3. Do you keep all of the models you build? Sell them/ trash them?

Never sold a kit in my life - who'd want them?  I find a house move causes a bit of a cull but I would only throw kits away if I absolutely had no way of displaying them
