I think you have it right. I'd add brown just for some color variation.

Imho if you look at the real one the edges are very even where the wind flares it out from the point of the leak and no real dark patches except where it caught on a rivet or something right back close to the trailing edge. Possibly a little narrower in scope missing that pair of bolts.
I've got my crosses in the wrong spot. I placed mine to miss the flaps hinge arms.......good references are a must

Hello everyone !
time for my last update before my vacation ! Countdown as begun and only 8 days left before leaving for beautiful Paris.

So with a bit of help got from the forum and from @digger303, I tried to improve my stain on the top wing. I think I got what I wanted with the original picture. So here's the finished result after the Matt varnish

ImageIMG_4465 2 by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
ImageIMG_4466 2 by Francis Pare, sur Flickr

May be a bit too heavy on the darker stains but still like it.

Also, the exhaust is also done.

ImageIMG_4468 2 by Francis Pare, sur Flickr

In the meanwhile, with oil paints drying, I got ready the fuselage for priming. Not the easiest masking, and not my best job.
ImageIMG_4425 by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
ImageIMG_4426 by Francis Pare, sur Flickr

I had the deception to find ghost seams afterwards even if everything had been spot priming to check. Everything was fix carefully. Saw a great video about that subject on Will Pattison channel.

So with not much time at hand before my trip, I'll start working on the rigging of the top wing. And paint the white on the fuselage. As you can see, there's lots of colors to be use to put before the white :

ImageIMG_4467 2 by Francis Pare, sur Flickr

I've planned to use them in specific locations and one or two in more general application. Let's hope it comes out as expected and as I imagined it.

Take care everyone !!
Francis

Looking good Francis.
I can certainly see a lot of differences here between manufacturers which reflects on the back to the time some of these molds were made and the level of detail the better ones aspire to.

Thanks Joe ! For sure I'll have a good time ! 2 weeks to enjoy that beautiful city in a slow pace enjoying drinks, terasses, food and brasseries.

Thank you ! not easy to figure out a way to achieve it with red. But my idea was to start with the fabric underneath and built from there. I know have to figure a way to achieve variation again with red but on the fuselage. The variation for the white of it part is done as it as been raining here the last 3 days. So no outdoor chores could be done. 9 inches of rain in 3 days in half. So had time to progress a bit even with the upcoming trip

it is indeed a great kit as you have seen with all our exchange during the our common build. And has you know, it made me buy a few more since I started it. I got now 10 WnW in my stash including this one. But, as mentioned a few times on my thread, they are still noticeable flaws for the price range they were.

Hello fellow modelers !
Hope you're all doing well and enjoying summer ! Yes I'm still here and the project is still alive even tough lots is keeping me away from it since the beginning of spring.
The last time I did an update I was about to leave for my vacation. But just before that, I had time to apply a variety of colors as modulation\preshading for the upcoming white part of the plane.
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
Image by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
I used a different variety of browns and tans over an off-white that's a bit dirty looking... AK RC one that is quite on the beige tone. Finish that the morning before taking the plane for beautiful Paris.
We headed to the airport quite early as the Montreal Airport at that moment was in chaos !! We were quite lucky. No problem on our side. The plane was a bit late but we had time to take lots of drinks before with a couple of friends who where also going to Paris, on a different flight. And met with them for a nice evening out.
But what a beautiful city ! A Place I would live in if I had the chance ! My girlfriend being half French, she had been there quite a few time and knew a few tricks to get on the Parisian good side ;)
We had the chance to have a nice appartment near the Quartier Latin
Image by Francis Pare, sur Flickr

Where we discovered this place :

Image by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
It's the equivalent of the Natural science museum in NY, located in a beautiful place called le Jardin des Plantes, quite off the tourist track as it's mostly Parisian or French tourist that hang there. It was one our beloved place and now even on our to-do-list. That place adds up to all the beautiful well taking care off garden and parks, like the Jardin des Tuileries or les Jardin Royal (wow !) or even better la Place des Vosges. Victor Hugo lived there for a while. All beautiful places to stop and take time to appreciate the city.
Being the nice people we are  we were quite lucky to get a free priority access to this beautiful place :
Image by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
THe Panthéon ! Where lots of great French are buried. We got in free all because we helped out a lady with a few questions and she had extra passes. It wasn't on our agenda to visit the interior as they are so many places to see... and the costs add up quite quickly !
Unfortunately, a dream of mine was impossible as it's still ongoing repair after the fire
Image by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
But still beautiful to look at ! As his everything in this city ! Every corner there's a nice thing to see or an another view of monument
Image by Francis Pare, sur Flickr

And speaking of beautiful place everyone got to see once in their lifetime Versailles ! WOW !!! Simply astonishing as no words or pictures can translate the beauty of it
Image by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
And when you are royalty and you're tired of the everyday life you can always escape to the cottage !
Image by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
That is the Petit Trianon, a small place built for Marie Antoinette where she had lakes, forest and a farm for her pleasure to get away from all the formalities of court.
But when you truly want to get away... why not go to one of you're other castles!!!

Image by Francis Pare, sur Flickr

Almost as beautiful as Versailles, Fontainebleau, where Louis XIV grew up and dream of Versailles. And where Napoleon lived. A few days after that, it was time to get back to reality at home. First off, was to get my dog, Maïka, from the shelter. She was quite tired of all the fun she had running and playing in the woods.
Image by Francis Pare, sur Flickr

But on the side of that...they was let's say an incident that I discovered in my work room...
Image by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
A fallen bookcase, that on top of was the bin where I keep all my Pfalz part :wall: :wall: :wall: :wall: :wall: :wall:
My son had taken care of getting all the parts on the floor and luckily nothing was broken !! Only a mark on my top wing and a broken handle on the engine that will easily be glue back in place.
It felt down from one of the cat trying to get to the above window, who manage at the same time to knock off my Lego Slave I
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
I'll have to disassemble it and get it back together.

But a quick return to modeling. I continued on the mottling of different colors but this time for the red part of the plane. Sorry no pictures. And, yes, again, it was time to leave for an another vacation ! First off, a blackjack trip in the US, where I saw that strange thing :
Image by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
Yes ! it's a dog ! a service dog supposedly ...And yes, I did win on my trip.
Back home, with my son, it was time for him to finally graduate to a blue belt in karate !
Image by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
I was quite proud of him because I worked quite hard to obtain this one. Almost gave it all up and he's one of the youngest (8 years old) with this belt in his school
Then it was time for a small vacation with my son. First off to a beautiful train museum.
Image by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
It was quite astonishing to see all those trains...more then a hundred different sort. After that, off to the zoo.. we all love animals here.
Image by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
We were unlucky being the only bad temperature in august but still lots of fun... and no it's not a real girafe ! They was a lego exposition at the same time.

If you kept up with me all the way up to here, back to modeling... It was time to paint the white. I had trouble finding the right white... they were all either too bright, too beige or to grey... but I stumble on a bottle of Vallejo Model color off-white that was exactly what I was looking for ! But I hate Vallejo ! Even more the Model Color range for spraying.. so I did a few test and found that it work pretty good with Mr Leveling Thinner... but still not great.
Image by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
I polish the paint as it was too rough to my liking and don't know why but it first came out grayish... so I had to put more coats on and lost in the process most of my preshading. May be because of the black primer ?...But I still am happy with the white. I have a few spots that I have to spray again because of hairs in the paint or spatter while spraying. You can also see what I did for the upcoming red.
I hope to correct everything this weekend and let it cured good for the upcoming masking for the red. But that will be after another vacation next week, another blackjack trip to Atlantic City ! let's hope we win big this time as a landmark is coming.
Take care everyone and thank you for reading all of it ! Hope I wasn't boring !
Francis

Never boring loved the pic of the Eiffel Tower very beautiful, as is a lot of France.
The train museum however really got my attention as one day I have a Br52 to build so it was great to see a high quality pic.
It looks as you had a crammed a lot into a short time.
I look forward to seeing the Plafz painted with the wings on.

Hello everyone ! Quick update !
As through my more then too busy schedule I found time to paint the red of the plane. The masking was a bit time consuming mostly around the pilot area as their's a red band around it above the white. But my "bookcase incident" in previous post helped a bit... when everything fell to the floor, the bottom wing pop out of the fuselage... so I took advantage of that.

ImageIMG_0197 by Francis Pare, sur Flickr

This time, contrary to the white, I was able to keep all the hard work I did with the base color. a lot of color variation going on in the red and that was my goal as red is not a good color to withstand the elements. Still work to be done on the bottom wing (false shadows and oil paints) Hope to find time today to do that and to unmask the fuselage. But as always with me, so many things on the agenda...like buying winter clothes for my son as it's getting close to that time of year here... only 8 degrees here this morning.

Take care everyone !
Francis

Hello everyone ! hope you're all having a great weekend ! Finally a real update on my never-ending project !! Paint job is done ! But didn't get there without any bumps on the roads ! they were plenty.

As I had said in my last update, I had taken advantage of the bottom wing popping out of the fuselage when the bookcase fell. But let's say it wasn't too much of an advantage finally... or I should have thought a bit more ahead in my haste of doing things while being way over my head with work and other activities.

Speaking of activities, I was about to leave for my first of many at my last update. Which was a golf weekend, with cottages, with my friends at Mont-Tremblant

ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
Let's say we hab a bit too much fun with lots of fun games during the golf games. It was cold (only 5 C) but still. Had my best game ever (87), my longest drive ever (285) and my shot ever ( 175 yard to the hole, ball stop hanging over the hole).

But back to modeling, as the wing was painted I realized I had to align the demarcation between red and white perfectly with the wing glued. SO I glued it.. and first bump... CA glue pop out even after being careful

ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr

Let's say it's not in the easiest area to clean. I tried 2 products to remove it without any success even if the VMS one helped a bit. But the AK one did nothing at all. SO I carefully masked everything thing to sand it and repaint

ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
And replace the lost details with wires.
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
And repaint everything with a good result
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr

Other problem that I hadn't think off properly was the junction between de wing and fuselage... which had a huge gap.

ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr

So lots of filling and sanding sessions.... and I mean lots because how it forms. I should have use may be epoxy putty instead of regular putty.
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
And, in the above picture, another problem appeared. You can barely see it but there's a seam in the read paint that I had taking care of but came back to life may be with all the manipulations of handling the plane and dropping it 2 or 3 times on the floor.

All that killed my mojo. But had other activities that took care of my time...like visiting one my new favorite cities in the US, beautiful Portland, Maine.
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr

And lots of hiking with the beautiful fall we have here.

ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr

And now, this weekend I was able to finish the corrections and finish the paint job. First the crosses :
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr

And finally the Pfalz
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
The bottom that not perfect with the repairs but enough for me :
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr

Only think I'm not sure yet is my rib effect....
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
I used red brown and it came out too light to my taste... What do you think ? May going over it with pure brown...it looks more dirty then shadow of rib effect....?

Welcome back to everyone in another installment I'll call this time the project of bad lucks...

First off. Has I wasn't please with the rib effect I had done, I removed it all with thinner as it was acrylics over lacquer. Mask everything up again and sprayed tamiya smoke this time.

ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr

It looks darker because I put the gloss coat on. I'll surely try to improve it further with oil paints later on.

But now, with the first bad luck of this update ( but a numerous one since the start). By handling the plane, don't know what happened but it crack my earlier repair on the bottom of it !

ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr

As I'm really tired of that repair, and annoy by it a lot I decided to leave as it is !! Don't want to go in other rounds of sanding, filling, priming and painting !!!! I want to progress for real on this never-ending project.

So speaking of progress, as the bird was gloss coated it was time for decals. And realized that with my chosen scheme I only had 2 to put on ! :)

ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr

Great looking birds....and bird I think. Love the result of my paint job and chosen scheme.

It was now time to put the damn lozenges fabric decals underneath the wings... So has I already complain about, pretty cheap for the prices of the kit that I have to cut the decals to the desired tape.

ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr

Time to cut the decals, but it was time for another two bad lucks !! :wall: As I cut my first wing, I realized I hadn't enough decals left for the second wing ! I don't have enough because of an earlier bad luck when doing the top wing.A few places had ripped off because of masking tape. And cut one wrongly for the elevators.
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
And realize afterward, that I had forgot to cut them in the right direction !!because the lozenge must be perpendicular to the length of the wing. So know I have even less to finish the other wing if I put them in the right direction. I now face the dilemma of "patching" with the few leftovers I have at hand or ordering Aviattic decals ?.... not cheap but would pay for it but still would have to wait a few weeks to continue the project. And would only use small portions of them...
Any suggestions ?
Francis

As it is the underside I would just use the 3 pieces and try to get them to join as best as can be done. The crack is going to be a bigger under side eye sore if you ever turn it over so I wouldn't worry to much about the decals.
The upper side paint looks marvellous and I love the Crow/Raven (if that's what it is ).

The 3 pieces of decals are actually those that fit the wing on the top of the pictures...except they are cut on the wrong side... the lozenge go in the opposite direction of how they printed. So that's one bad luck again, or should I say mistake. I should have enough to patch the other side with my leftovers if I install them in the wrong direction. But the patches will show as it didi with the top wings. The decals are real thin and the lozenge are hard to align.

And if I order aviattic decals, that's almost 50$ CAN with shipping and a wait of a few weeks. They will fit perfectly as they don't need to be cut to the right size. But the color isn't exactly the same then the ones I put on the bottom of the top wing... But They do look more realistic then the WnW ones...

Bummer about the crack! The decals on the side look great. $50 is a lot. How do you feel about only piecing them together? I'm not sure if I would purchase the decals but it is a WNW kit and I think I would want to.

I suppose when your buzzing it around the room and are looking up it will be too obvious..... ;)

You do with what's best. I know my cheapish Roden kit cost me 50 and I'd be shirking on paying another 50 for decals, but you have a top of the line WING NUT WINGS so I maybe I might grab the new decals.

I think, given the cost of the kit I personally would splurge the extra $50 for the correct decals. If you try and recycle the ones you have then every time you look at the kit you will know the issues.
Just my tuppence worth of thoughts....

Hello everyone and welcome back to another installment in the project of bad lucks/mistakes... yes the series continues for me. What had started as a great project, and to me, one of the best work I had done is turning into a nightmare  :wall: :bash: :pistols:

When we left off, I had the dilemma of patching the wing with the decals I had left or ordering new ones for 50$. I decided to go with the ones I had at hand because 50$ for only a few decals was expensive in my eyes and we have currently lots of expenses at home (girlfriend birthday weekend out to Quebec City, new faucet in the kitchen $$$$, small Renos, and Christmas coming around the corner). But I mostly decided that because the Aviatic decals aren't the same as the WnW ones. They look quite different ; more realistic. And the top wing being done already I didn't want the different look. And I could not find new ones from WnW, except at outrageous prices. So work started on the bottom wing...

But before that and through that I had to fix the rudder. The rudder was already done and painted the cross on it... but don't know how but sprayed something on it and had to redo it.... but always made a mistake while spraying it (white is really hard to spray for me). Done it 5 times over before getting it right !!!! Then sprayed the crosses again but realized they were too large and not even. So sprayed everything again and decided to use the decals this time.

But a reaction happened with the decal solution and my gloss coat and paint underneath.
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr

So I had to attempt to repair that without touching the crosses because they weren't protected yet by any type of varnish.
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
I forgot a picture of the painted repair but it's just ok... not good. I'll try to hide it with weathering.

So that was my first series of bad lucks and mistakes. Now to the bottom wing... As I said. I didn't have enough large decals left to do as shown in the instructions
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
The decals on the left Side are the ones going on the upper part wing on the pictures. and the rest for the bottom part. So work started with good ones.

ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr

They went down better then the first time on the top wing. And then on to the other wing. I decided to put on first the right size decals I had and finish with the patches in more or less the middle of the wing. Again they went down much better.

ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr

And then on the middle part left.... and realize my mistake after...
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr

I didn't align them the same...and actually the good way is the small patch in the middle... :bash: :bash: :bash: aaah well to bad now ! have to leave like that now. And I said to my self the crosses will hide it may be a bit.

Again, I decided to paint them as I did on the top wing.

ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr

ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr

But, after painted the white I remembered something... When masked, the lozenge decals on the top wing had lifted even after weeks of drying and with gloss and Matt coat... and that's exactly what happened again...

ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
:bash: :bash: :bash: :bash: :pistols: :pistols: :pistols: :jd: :jd:

SO WHAT NOW ??!! Even without that problem, this was to be the last time I showed the bottom of the bottom wing. Don't have any decals left. I could now get WnW ones at sprue brothers or Andy's HQ but would receive them only after Christmas. But how do I remove the rest of the decals ? Or I order Aviattic one .... but still have to remove all of it even on the good part of the wing..
But, every bad luck and mistake is killing my mojo.... I'm more in the mood of leaving it like that and pushing on to the rest and finishing it. And moving on to my next project. As I said, what started as one of my best project ever turned into a disaster... If I push to finish the rest I would still be able to weather it and do the rigging. It would look good, if I don't scrap anything again. Just have to leave it on it's wheels.

I think I'd be inclined to get the replacement decals, feather off the edge of the existing ones and apply the new over the top. I learnt the hard way long ago that decals and masking tape do not mix. :(

The build itself is a work of art - I'm looking forwards to seeing how it turns out fully rigged!!

Well... ordered the decals. Aviattic's full wing. So a bit cheaper than those made specifically for my model. Ordered from Hannant's where it was the cheapest by far. 40$CAN instead of minimum 50$ everywhere else. 3 reasons why I ordered the full sheets ; first the price, second to practice trimming the edges better then I had done, and third hope to some left to do another model.

I've read a few reviews on them and everyone said they were by far much better than the WnW ones. Every review says they have problems sticking the decals properly with WnW as I did. So let's hope I get them before Christmas ! The look of Aviattic's is much better and they are already designed to fit with the right alignement of the lozenge, what weren't the WnW. And that complicated the trimming of them and made me do one of the mistake in my last post.

Last night, I decided to push on ! SO I worked on a few small parts left and got organized for the next upcoming phases. Hope to have something to post this weekend.

And I'll try putting on the decals the best I can when I get them wherever I'm at in the construction process.

      Hello everyone !
Finally an update on my Pfalz. Again, I was faced off with a few problems since the last one. But now I'm finally looking ahead and made some real progresse that restores my liking to this kit.

But first off ! Happy New Year to everyone ! Hope you all had a fun party ! Ours, as always his with friends, and was just too much fun...lots and lots and lots of champagne, music, good food (African theme this year as one of the batch is from Cameroun), karaoke, games...went to bed at 4am this morning !

Back to the Pfalz. First here's where I am before the start of everything that's going to be in this update.

ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr

When I left off last time, again the WnW decals had failed me with the ripping apart of all the lozenge fabrics decals on the bottom wing. So, I had ordered Aviattic's to replace them. They are simply stunning ! and in my opinion, much better looking and much more realistic. After carefully studiying their instructions, I decided to do a test. The decals are translucent and I wanted to see how much they were and how they react when putting them on. As you can see they are quite translucent :
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr

After seeing that, having only the white primer left on the wing, I decided to paint fabrics colors on the wing first.
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr

And on with the decals... but again I had to trim them for the wing. But test did show me that you could easily cut them after being in place and let dry. By using a knife and sanding the rest....yes yes sanding gently. They kind off disintegrate when doing that. Love those decals !
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
You can see above the difference in the look of the WnW with my top wing. As mentioned, for me, much better looking aviattic ones. They went on so easily !! The only problems I encountered, at this stage, were of my own doing. On the one you're seeing I touch the decals while microsol was on. And on the other wing I move the decal too hardly to put it in place. So places that ripped a bit. But so easy to put on ! didn't even bother to cut them into sections. They were both one big decal trimmed to fit. I strongly recommend them to everyone ! Only one advice, be sure to put them on a gloss coat or gloss paint as they recommend, because they move not as easily as ordinary decals.

So after that, in order to save time and make progress, I decided to use the German crosses decals instead of painting them as I had done with the top wing ; and it was also time to put the rib decals on. But that's when the problems started again...
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
On this one one see a kind of chemical reaction that happened and made it look they was paint rip off. You can also see the decals, at the top, won't stick. Both crosses and the stitches had all problem to stick properly, as all the other WnW decals in my kit had problem with. After putting on my gloss coat in order to do my weathering and shadow effect on.. again the decals didn't resist.
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
And what I' not showing here, is that I had "staining" problems on the fabric decals after putting on my gloss coat...whatever the reason I'm just tired off encountering problems out of my control... so I decided to let go the underside ! It would be as it his at that's it...if you had the problems showing there. So here's the only picture they will be of underside till the end of my build. A little weathering left to be done.

ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr

But now real progress !!! Has those problems being putted behind me it was time to go on with the weathering. Everything was done with oil paints except for the use of Tamiya's panel line wash with the help of VMS Weathering carrier....what an awesome product !!!! Strongly recommend it to everyone ! Still a beginner is using oil paints but I think I did good. Use lots of archive pictures to recreate what I thought would look good. So a bit of weathering will be left to be done after the Matt coat. And on after with subassemblies and rigging !
Hope everyone enjoys how it looks. Criticism welcome

Such a huge work on this beautiful model   and i can feel the frustration about the decal, paint them is often the best solution (even if it takes - again - time to deal with!).

Well actually, with the small amount of weathering done on the bottom wing, meaning only dot filters with oil paints, most of it doesn't show. Only thing now showing is what I showed in the picture on the crosses and the repairs gone bad where it crack again... so may be I will be able to hide most of it. I'm waiting at the end. Everything as been put aside to dry for a few days and put a Matt coat on after. I've now started in the meantime Airfix's gloster javelin. Great kit for now.

      Hello everyone !
Back to project from hell ! Been a real long time I made an update for lots of different reasons... less time at the bench, hard winter, personal problems, blackjack trips, lots of work at work and around the house, another plane in process (Gloster Javelin)... but mostly because I encountered my share of problems with the project ! This update will show not much progress but let me told you their was lots of hours put in. The main problem I had was my Matt coat. The first one, my bottle had went bad and it made a huge mess. By carefully buffing I was able to remove it. The second time, with a new bottle and another brand I think my airbrush wasn't clean enough...so I went again through the same process. Except that it made me have to do lots of touch up on the paint and do again the weathering. All the problems were mostly on my red paint. Lost in the process a few details mostly on the ribbing of the bottom wing.
Other problem, fit issues with the machines guns and a piece just behind them that I thought would hide a gap I had in the fuselage but it didn't...so I had to do my best to repair it

ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr

May be some of you remember that I had lots of problem with the bottom of the wing...decals and the fit. Had another issue recently has it king of pop out and crack...
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
I decided I wouldn't try to repair it as I want to put behind me the project once and for all, and theirs so much problems with the underside that I won't show it anymore.

With all that, here's where I'm at at the moment :

ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr

I'm still happy with the current result as lots of part of it are still the best I've done. Most of the problems are mostly bad lucks and not mistakes.. but still a few mistakes on my side. As you can see, the struts are in place on the top wing. After a test fit, I realize it was easier to install it that way. Hope to be able to tackle the rigging may be tomorrow. And try to finish the project this mont. Feel free to comment !

Hello everyone and welcome back !

The first step to rigging is done ! And it went pretty well. Unfortunately, I had lost all my turnbuckles previously made earlier in the build. Had to redo all of them.

ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr
ImageSans titre by Francis Pare, sur Flickr

It took me around 3 hours and half of work to rig everything plus make all the eyelets and turnbuckles. And surprisingly, I liked the rigging the part. A bit less making the necessary hardware.
In total, for the top wing, 18 eyelets were needed. I made may be 25 if I count the ones flying into the air !! A pretty easy task. With 0,15 mm copper wire cut to about a length of 1.5 cm, I twist it around a 0,3 mm steel wire I glued in a stick. Actually I twist the stick while holding the 2 ends of the wire. It goes pretty fast. Then, you just cut the excess to fit either in the plane or in the turnbuckles.
As for the turnbuckles, 14 were needed for the top wing. I used Albion alloys brass tube 0,5 mm by 0,3 mm inside diameter. To cut them, I inserted a 0,3 mm brass tube in them, and carefully rolled them, while being hold in place in a piece of wood. The inserted tube helped to keep the inside diameter cleaning and drilling to a minimum. They were cut to a length of about 4 mm
To assemble everything I use fast setting CA glue for the wires (EZ Line) and medium for the hardware.
For my next by plane, I think I will use 0,6 mm tube instead. Will be easy to put in the eyelets as I had to drill most turnbuckles a bit larger on the inside. And even if every site on the internet recommends 0,5 mm tube, I dare to see the difference by eye with a 0,6 mm

Next up will be the bottom wing, undercarriage and the rudder rigging. For those, I need to go again to the eyelets/turnbucles factory ! I need 20 more eyelets and 16 turnbuckles.

Disclaimer : I assemble the configuration it by my own research on pictures I had at hand. mostly on the WnW site. So, I may be mistaking for some of them.

The easy part as been done. Now I'll to glue the wing in place and work the wires to right length. The hard part. I'll try first on the undercarriage and the rudder as I have an easier access to them.

        Feel free to comment !

I'm also wondering if doing a British aircraft and have to use flat wires how does the process have to be adapted ?

well I was thinking about the same thing while doing it because of their flat wire. I know the flat wires used to be sold by a company that went out of of business... and if I remember right they were PE. I'll have to check eventually as I have at least 2 british bi-planes in my stash. But, on another hand, it's so small... I'm sure it still can be found from another company.

well I was thinking about the same thing while doing it because of their flat wire. I know the flat wires used to be sold by a company that went out of of business... and if I remember right they were PE. I'll have to check eventually as I have at least 2 british bi-planes in my stash. But, on another hand, it's so small... I'm sure it still can be found from another company.
The rigging kit I got for the Swordfish is from SBS Models if that helps??

In my perpetual hunt through peoples stash reducing I picked up a Pe set from RB and it's pretty small stuff.

Many, many years ago I used ordinary cotton.. Haven't actually used the SBS kit yet - it requires drilling 0.2mm and 0.4mm holes in various parts. Thats the next job on the list!! :)

A quick schnoze on-line pulled up references to a RB productions set for 1/32 British WW1 rigging. Component parts are:
            RB-P32011 - 9/32" RAF Wires - €5.75
            RB-P32012 - 1/4" RAF Wires - €5.75
            RB-P32013 - British wire terminals - €6.50

              Hello everyone.
I can say that I know can see the finish line !! The second round of eyelets and turnbuckles went well ; and as always a few flew to the floor monster and never came back ! All the eyelets were glued to the bottom wing and a few of them glued to the turnbuckles. The undercarriage was all rigged. I learn right after the first attempt to not be afraid to put tension on the wires ! that's why I did those first. The different exhausts were glued in place and finally the top wing was also !!

You can clearly see the amount of wires and that plane is supposed to be a "simple" one on the rigging side ! The final rigging should start this weekend (long weekend here :) ) I have a touch up to do on the exhaust as the paint seems to have wear off even while being in a storage box, may be by rubbing with other pieces or the box.
