Magnum PI Diorama

Post by Twokidsnosleep »

Don’t ask me why, but these figures seem to have my interest and motivation so am going with it :
I am supposed to be making Christmas gifts for friends and family, but just no go :wall:

3D printed resin figures files from Thingiverse.
Image

Image

I have Magnum, TC and Higgins…Zeus and Apollo too but they failed in their first print
Rick sucks so he was omitted purposefully.

I am recording this for my own record so you can skip ahead and or ignore the entire thing and do something else
Clear green resin for magnum and TC; Higgins and dogs were the grey(and had dogs fail lack of supports)
set the y axis to 40 mm and this gave 70mm tall figures, approximately 1/24 scale
The details are soft so not likely be able to make these any larger.
Image
So Magnum:
Primed in ultimate black, then grey hand painted shirt and a blue grey mix for the pants
That was Ultimate White base mixed with some Ultimate grey and some Tamiya blue. Same paint was used for Mando’s pants.
Blue jeans have that b/g base, then W/N ultraMarine oil dappled in and thinned for wear areas
Skin is W/N griffin alkyd flesh thinned with white and darkened with burnt umber for shaded areas
Hair W/n burnt umber over gelb primer
Hat same blue oil, then Tamiya X-4 and W/n matt varnish to tone it down

Image

The red shirt is XF-7 Tamiya…green and white foliage and blue birds to come

Extra Details:
Gun squared off to look more like a 9mm, drilled out and magic powder over black used
Leather belt with paper belt loops and aluminum buckle
Tinted sunglasses from opticians cheap glasses after your dilation appointment, rimmed with gold sharpie and gold painted wire arms
Ring for his third finger to make, but it switches hands so have to pick where to put it
Rolex Pepsi watch and bracelet will be from more aluminum shavings off the lathe
I still have the shirt’s crazy details to add and not sure about the hat logo yet…white posca pen on route

Image

Image

Image
Ya, that Detroit logo has to go, will try again with a finer pen

Nice progress on the dudes :th:

TC's trousers must have been a pain in the butt to figure out but they turned out really well.

Looking forward to seeing how you tackle the dogs.

Nice work so far! I always enjoyed watching Magnum with my pops growing up, I wish I had a mustache like him

Thinking out loud here
So trying to get a rough idea of how to put all of these Magnum PI pieces together for display

:think: :scratch::

Backdrops
Image
Or
Image

Chopper tilted and in the air on a wire :th:
Then Tiered levels of figures???
Image

Image

Image

Maybe separate base for each figure and vehicle that then interlock together by their base?
Suggestions welcome

I like the idea of the beach front back drop, Magnum next to his iconic ride, the the other two on the center platform, van right behind them. And then the helicopter suspended like you said. I think that could come out really well. :cheers2:

I might chop the van in half length-wise and stick it right up Vs the backdrop

Or maybe put all the vehicles in one area and the figures in another

I like where you've got Magnum behind the Ferrari at the front - maybe switch Higgins & TC and have them behind some kind of low wall/fence for cover?

How can you have the chopper in the air when TC is the pilot ?
Higgins is a problem. He might be better crouching down behind the Ferrari ?

See it confuses all of you
I think separate bases for each character and their vehicle(s) like islands that can come together
They are not meant to be interacting in one scene per se (ie not a shoot out scene, that was the only set of figures I could find)
The chopper is to go in distance with the backdrop as it is also smaller scale which lends to a distant perspective view

Yes it is confusing and why I posted to see other minds confirm that it wasn’t right in their eyes too
Maybe some amputations and remove the weapons or find different figures
They all need to chill out and not look so aggressive
Would love to have Magnum seated in the Ferrari

Ahhh ok - yah I completely missed that... so you're looking at doing separate vignettes for each figure and then forming a composite/montage out of them... kinda like a 3D movie poster?

That's a really neat idea... or did I get that wrong too???

I like Magnum where he is and in the pose he's in. It just says Magnum to me. The helicopter for scale...yep...I see that. I like the idea of 3 bases forming into one composite scene too for some reason. I think you've hit it just right or dang near close to right.

I like the idea of it. Bit like a movie poster from the 70s, with all the elements crammed in. Beach backdrop a nice idea too. Gotta have a bikini girl in there somewhere too. It'll come together as the parts build up.

Forging on a bit with these figures
I have modified TC by cutting off the gun
Then I made a decal of this using Testors decal paper and my office ink jet

I needed a lighter shirt to make that pop, but it looks better and very isn sync with the tv character
