Diorama base - how to keep sand in depth in place

Post by RangerNeil »

I have a round base I am using as the base for the D30 diorama. Covered it in PVA and spread the sand media on it. Obviously the base layer is stuck on nicely.
The question is - how can I make sure picking up the base won't shed sand material every where???

Wet the sand with IPA, but don’t soak it. Then drip a diluted mixture of water and PVA glue on top. The IPA should remove the surface tension and allow the glue mixture to soak in. Then all you have to go is let it dry.

This is from the Boulder Creek Railway YouTube channel.

Matthew is correct on both counts. Boulder Creek Railway is a valuable YouTube channel for diorama building techniques. And isopropyl alcohol breaks the surface tension so the diluted PVA glue gets in to every crevice. I use these pump spray bottles for both the IPA and diluted PVA:

Thanks guys!! I actually nicked the wifes hair spray (she doesn't know - yet!) after seeing an item on YouTube.

I've got more plans in the near future so I'll give this method a go next time.

AK provides a Gravel & Sand Fixer which is a good product to fix your sand. :thumb1:

I use a combination of PVA first and if that doesn't hold everything, then I'll add some of the AK fixer as mentioned by FEPK - just pippet it down, it smells a bit but definitely does the job.

Woodland Scenics do a pre-diluted PVA glue which you can usually get from HobbyCraft if you've got one nearby.
