Metal Modeling Parts HELP!

Post by martindavid »

Good morning All,

I am starting the Tamiya 1:32 scale Vought F4U-1 Corsair "Birdcage" and I have never dealt with metal bits before. What is CS glue? Is it different from Crazy Glue? Should I put the parts on as I go or should the metal bits be painted separately and then put on? Should I use a different paint than Tamiya or Vallejo? Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Do you mean CA glue?
Thats CycroAnylate (sp?) - better known as "super glue". Sticks almost anything to almost anything - which unfortunately includes the user if you are not careful!
There are various types with differing setting times on the market, best to experiment and see what you get on with. I've been using the packs of 5 from Poundland - very runny so it can be applied using a toothpick - quickly- only drawback is its more or less instant "grab". Apparently Ammo do one that is more gel-like with a longer setting time which lets you position PE items more accurately.

As for painting PE - its personal choice, I don't think there is a really right or wrong way. Again, my personal preference is to wipe the PE parts over with an IPA (Iso-Propyl Alcohol) swab to clean them after removing from the sheet, clean up then bend to shape as required then secure to a painting turn-table with masking tape, priming and then painting. Tamiya and Vallejo are both suitable once primed.

Yes the S key is right next to the A key so maybe a typo.
Liquid cement will also clean the metal bits.
Don't use Tamiya for brush painting , while it can be done it is generally a pain. Vallejo is great for brush work Tamiya thinned with Mr Hobby levelling thinner is magic for the airbrush.

    :cheers2:
