The stash size

Post by RangerNeil »

Lost a part from an Airfix Typhoon the other night - not dropped this time, I had all 8 taped to the paint turn-table for a quick waft of matt varnish, something I've done many times before without issue. That night however #8 decided to part company with the tape and disappear into the stash. :o
So yesterday I had the stash out and searched everywhere. No sign of the missing part :( but I think the stash size might be about to be an issue. If it ain't at STABLE proportions already it ain't far off....
Image.

How many SAAB Viggens does a modeller need? Well, not counting the 1/32 version Royal Mail seem to have lost, the answer seems to be 13...
Image

We need a Swedish group build sometime I think.
I also seem to have a large number of Regimental Jeep & Land rovers + an LRDG contingent......

Some real classics in there (and some old dross, lets be honest).

My eye was caught by the Airfix 1/24 Hurricane in its original boxing. Still a pretty good kit after all this time.

Not too sure about the duplication either, how many jeeps does one need?
Its been tried and tested, it works! So don't blame the system if you're no good.

Oh yeah. Big problem for me
They make too many cool things!!!
Collection is a full on hobby as well, just gets out of hand easily

Was thinking of starting a “show me your collection” thread where you put a photo of an associated group of kits you have …
eg Wing Nut Wings or Porsche or British tanks etc etc

Guilty as charged (excessive stash). But in our defense I charge that the hunt and purchase is as much part of modeling as the research, extra after-market bits, scratch building, dioramas, etc. That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

I have over 1000 kits in the stash. The loft is rammed and any spare cupboard space. Mainly armour, some aircraft and a few ships. Also a smattering of Bandai Star Wars. My problem is I'm a massive tank nerd with a touch of OCD so I have to have all the panzer variants etc. I am seriously thinking of selling a lot now though. :) Remember there is always someone dumber than you.

Well - there are actually 2 WNW kits in there - the Bristol F2B and the Roland. I couldn't afford anymore as the prices were going up faster than a space launch...
There are also 2 more Sturm Tigers, 1 with interior and 1 x King Tiger also with interior.
What you don't see is what was left in the build room:
    1/72 Matchbox Flower class Corvette
    1/72 Revell Type VIIC U-Boat
    1/100 Revell English Brigantine
    1/48 GWH Northrop P-61
    1/48 Zvezda Il-2
    1/72 Zvezda Mi-26
    1/72 MPC Eagle Transporter
    1/32 Border Models Lancaster
    1/48 Airfix Fairey Gannett
    1/48 GWH Su-27B
    1/72 Mach Models .W. Argosy
    1/350 Thunderbird 2
    1/35 Meng WW1 male tank
    1/35 Meng WW1 female tank
    1/32 Trumpeter Swordfish
    1/32 Special Hobby Tempest II
    1/48 Airfix E.E. Lightning F1/F2/F3
    1/72 AModel Mi-6 early
1/72 Airfix "Dambusters" special edition with Dam.
Spare dam moulding for the above
    1/72 Airfix Vulcan - x2
    1/72 Airfix Victor - x2
    1/72 Airfix Valiant - x2

Might sell the spares of the last 3 - still thinking about that! :)

I do keep my collection to nothing smaller than 1/48 and no bigger than 1/9 also trying not to buy variants unless it just looks cool.
However I've decided to really apply the brakes, build what I have, except for 4 must haves still out there in the wild, plus I literally have no more storage space. Still got a couple coming in the postal system and they will have to go on the floor for now.
I don't buy direct form the shops very much at all, mostly pre owned kits so my cost base is much lower. I can just about sell everything for what I paid for it including freight costs if I decide and I'm not cause I'm still in denial land that I can build them all.

      Yep I agree it's fun.

I don't have as many as you, but I've got a lot. Not so many variants perhaps and no doubles.
I am going to restrict myself to getting upgrades for the ones I intend to build in the next 2 yrs. I can't plan any further than that.
I have found myself liking the building of diorama's especially after my last one. Modifying figures is something on the to do list.

Look at it this way,... everyone has a hobby, or habit, or fetish. Some may or may not know it while some care and others do not worry about it at all.

If you were not buying models, than what else would you be doing with the money? Wine, clothes, trips, food, sports, another hobby, collecting of some other sort, philanthropy, etc. If you are at a point in your life that you can spend it on your wants (like models), then go ahead and enjoy it. After all, you cannot take the money with you.

At least this kind of justification has worked for me.......(smile).

Now there is a problem of having to many hobbies or desires, but that is another thing all together, isn't it? Tell me it is, right? When it comes to scale modeling, tell that there is never too much!........ Come on, tell me that there is never too much..... I'm still waiting!
