Tamiya 2005 Subaru Impreza WRC - Monaco

Post by barryf1fan »

Made a start on the Impreza for my bud. He has a RL 2005 Impreza STi (road version :) )

I know Paul is doing an updated How-to series using this kit and I will probably watch along, just not try and go to that level of detail as I can only do what my 'level' is...
Don't have any box or sprue shots - but may try and get a couple and update the thread later.
Made a start on the kit though. Oh! And definitely gonna do the 2k clear on this one.

Hope to finish the body work first, and then do the chassis/interior... Just so nervous about the 2k :?

Anyway, thanks for looking in.

Thanks guys. :cheers2:

Got the body wet sanded and laid down the decanted TS-50 on the body, chassis, roll cage and a couple of other bits... Used the Ultimate Apex airbrush
Now, looking forward to the decal process (the part where it starts to look like a race car. Image )

After working half-a-day today, was able to start on, and get most of, the decals done on the body. Actually tore the middle stripe on both sides as these decals are super thin and not very workable... these decals seem really thin for Tamiya decals - albeit, they aren't Cartograph decals. So, yeah. Anyway, snapped a few pics and hope to start on the interior and chassis pieces next week.

Gonna let it set up overnight and hit them all with some Micro-Sol and finish up the few that I didn't do. :D

Made a start on the underside chassis - got everything clipped and cleaned up and ready to primer...

But, added a CF decal to the bottom of the front bumper, came out pretty nice. May do the mirrors and rear wing, but the rear wing will be a huge PITA, so may just do the mirrors.

Image

Image

Will say though, that this kit is really a strange one...
I guess it's a combination of a previous kit, the 2001 WRC Impreza - this one:

Image

And just has some more sprues added to the kit to update it to the 2005 version... and a couple of updated decals.
Honestly, after starting this one, I would suggest any of the other Tamiya Subaru kits...

Quick update. Not a ton done (well, more than I took pics of) but little by little. the rear 'wang' is looking good, and started on the under-chassis. :D

Image

Image

Image

The rear wing is supposed to be CF, but I made the executive decision to just go with black... and the Ultimate primer black just looks 'sexy' on there... so that's what it got.
Have a bit more to do to get the 'under' side done, and hope to have that done tomorrow.

As always, thanks for looking in. :hi:

Didn't have any work work for this Saturday, so was able to jump on the underside of the Scooby.
Got it all buttoned up and ready to start on the interior now. Bottom came out great (for me) except for one thing...
COMPLETELY missed the part of the chassis that is supposed to be white. :wall:
The bottom corner at the back, a portion that is under (and a bit more) the muffler... Uggh! Wasn't even rushing through this, just missed it in the instructions - I mean, like, looked right past it. :D Oh well, is what it is, and I doubt my bud will even know, much less notice. Probably wouldn't care even if he did.

Got the "engine" detail painted

Image

Used my cheeky little circle cutter to mask the discs...

Image

Completed.

Not much, but started on the interior. This was actually quite a lot of time for little 'apparent' result...

Thanks for the comments guys... been busy the last couple of months - not to mention lost a bit of the mojo. Also worked on the house and had to have our floors on the entire downstairs replaced (for the 3rd time :wall: )

Hope to have some updates soon, as I have done a bit of work the last couple of days. :thumb2:

Thanks guys... just about to wrap this one up. Couple more small decals and mount the front splitter and good to go, just needed to take a break and let stuff dry. Looking forward to finishing this one.

Will get some final pics soon, hopefully.

Btw, really tried to match the wheels to the real car (as far as I could tell online pics...), as I wasn't happy with the color that the wheels come molded in - waaaayyy too dark of a gold color.

I mixed 10 parts Tamiya gold leaf, with a drop of Tamiya Titan Gold and a drop of Tamiya Chrome silver. I think they came out pretty close...

Wheels look great Baz, always a fan of repainting the stock kit wheels whether it be silver or gold, they never look accurate to me straight out of the box, yours turned out perfect

I've not built the 2005 model, might add it to my stash after seeing yours!

Thanks @Gary30, not a fan of this kit... glad it's done. Wished I could've avoided the mistakes I made, but I guess it wouldn't be realistic if it was mistake free.

This one is done!!

Thanks for following along!! Wish I could devote more time to building but just other stuff takes away... ;)

Thank you, sir... and yes, I have chucked a couple of kits in the trash tearing decals when removing the tape. It is a challenge to be certain.

Thanks for looking in, Scott, appreciate it. :th: :cheers2:

I did get the case in today (gotta love Amazon  ) and got her strapped down for the journey. Will stuff pillow batting in it before sending...
