Kit Basing - Star Wars Legendary bashers

Post by Stokesy44 »

Long before CGI and digitally created vehicles, the ships in the original Star Wars Trilogy were legendary for how they were covered in bits from plastic model kits to add detail. From the battleship turrets adorning the deck of the Star Destroyer to the Porsche gear boxes on both mandibles of the Falcon, the keen eye can spot a never ending stream of tank parts and aircraft engine parts festooning the ships. The boys and girls at ILM were geniuses at it. Mind you, the art department wasnt bad either.

Check out the 1:1 detail of the kit bashing on the X-Wing model. Here's an X-Wing prop from The Empire Strikes Back, look for the German tank jacks details in the wing root behind Han.

If anyone has any more examples, would love to see them
Its been tried and tested, it works! So don't blame the system if you're no good.

There's a fantastic documentary on Disney+ about how ILM got started up and how they had to build everything from scratch, the cameras, the rigs, the computer controlled equipment. Lucas was really not impressed when he went for the first time to look at the early shots because they hadn't shot anything. All they'd done up to that point was build the equipment.

10 points if you can name the first shot they did that can be seen in A New Hope..........
