I started to assemble this Tamiya kit:

A unusual colour scheme for the under side. Was this because it was a prototype test machine ?

More likely it was the aircraft flown by a notable ace or leader. I could be wrong but its the kind of thing they did.

Here is a small excerpt from the page linked above:

Protection squadron - Die Würger-Staffel

Because of the greater length of runway it required, and the slow acceleration it had at low speeds, the Me 262 was especially vulnerable during take-off and landing. Galland thus established his own protection flight. Five Fw 190D-9s and D-11s were attached to JV44, the Platzschutzstaffel (Airfield protection squadron), headed by Leutnant Heinz Sachsenberg, to provide air cover for takeoffs and landings. Flights were to be undertaken in a two-aircraft Rotte up to altitudes of 500 metres, covering both the Me 262s taking off or landing and monitoring the surrounding skies for Allied fighters.

The Platzschutzstaffel flew the long-nosed 'Dora', Fw-190 D-9, or Fw-190 D-11 variant of the well-known Fw 190. These aircraft were painted bright red on their wings' undersurfaces with contrasting white stripes so anti-aircraft batteries could distinguish them from Allied piston-engined aircraft, leading to their humorous postwar nickname of the Papagei Staffel (Parrot squadron). The Staffel was nicknamed "Die Würger-Staffel", a play on the common nickname for the BMW 801 radial-engined original A-version of the Fw 190, which was Würger or Butcher-bird.

That's put me right!

The Allies called it rat catching. They realised the 262 was vulnerable on its long landing approach so they went after them at ground level. The Germans responded by setting up flak lanes and protection flights. Just shows what a weapon the 262 was.

Thank God it was delayed so much by Herr Hitler, can you imagine what a few hundred 262s could have done to the 8th Air Force in early 1944 as opposed to 1945?

You have to wonder if more 262's wreaking havoc on the bomber streams would have affected the RAF decision not to put Meteors into front line combat? In which case the first jet vs. jet combat would have occured over Germany in WW2, not in the skies over Korea

Very nice work, solids look good with nice merge lines and the mottling is not overdone. She will look superb once the markings go on.
