Hasegawa 1/48 Hawker Typhoon.

Post by RangerNeil »

Badly in need of Mojo restoring because of that Taurus Macchi abomination so I dug this out of the stash. Hasegawa's release in 1/48 of the Hawer Typhoon with bubble canopy.

First step in this one - losing what would otherwise be some highly visible ejector pin marks.

    :pop:

Now that does look nice. I didnt realise there was a 1/48 Tiffy out there. I love the extras too. There's nothing like a Hawker aircraft with the flaps down and that big wide set undercarriage.

I have a 1/48 Tempest in the stash and I've got my beady eye on some 3d printed flaps

Good luck with the build :th:
Its been tried and tested, it works! So don't blame the system if you're no good.

Its a Typhoon. Clean lines isn't the first description that comes to mind! Its a brick with a propeller on the front! I think the design team were on a bonus scheme, £5 for every straight line

You are right though, it does look good. Its amazing how this morphed into the Tempest, like turning a shire horse into a thoroughbred.

Some more progress - in a small way.
The rocket rails (2 pieces each) and the rockets (2 pieces each) are assembled:
        Image

The aftermarket resin exhausts have been cut off their supports and test fitted:
        Image

And the main undercarriage wheel halves are joined and will be sanded smooth when set:
        Image

The weighted look is a nice touch from Hasegawa!!

          Nice work.

Those weighted wheels will look great on the Tiffy with its broad track undercarriage. Its going to look proper busy underneath with the flaps and the ordinance. Talk about fully loaded :th:

Fun fact - tank kills were extremely hard to get with rockets due to their inaccuracy. Kills were significantly overstated, partly for morale, but mostly due to the difficulty of confirming kills. Pilots were not inclined to hang about for confirmation once they had attacked, German light flak was notoriously nasty, right up to the end of the war. In Pierre Closterman's book, The Big Show, he admitted his nerves couldn't take low level flak when he returned to ops after a break. I don't blame him!

Allied stuff wasn't too shabby either. He also recalled an event in the book when his airfield was attached by a Me 262. The thing came in so fast but 2 40mm Bofors guns happened to be pointing in the right direction as it carried out its strafing run. Each gun fired 1 clip and in his words, 'The 262 stopped a 40 millimeter and disintegrated into the air.'

Rockets came into their own when used against troop concentrations, vehicle convoys and trains.

I certainly hope so. :) Next job, I think, will be painting the fuselage as underwinfmg decals need to go on before the rocket rails....

Green overlay is on. I masked it off using masking fluid - may not have been the best idea as it looksike there were some patches I missed so I need to either cover it with more grey or find a way of remov8ng the patches without damaging the grey.....

Yes a see what you mean the camo is left with a few sharp jagged edges. Still I'm sure you will tidy all that up possibly some sanding of the edges and extending the green a little.

Looking good. I haven't found a fool proof way of painting tight line camo. I always find a bit where the process hasn't quite worked too

What colors did you use? I always find my attempts at basic RAF two-tone camo comes out too dark.

I think I'm going to have to do what I should have to start with - use 1mm tape to outline the edges and then block it in with wider stuff. Interestingly for the invasion syripes Hasegawa only give you the black lines. I'll have to add the white block by airbrush. And just to make life complicated the stripes supplied are 9.5mm wide....

Edges smoothed - I used Panzer Putty to cover the Green and gave it a light coat of the Dark Grey.

                  Good stuff.

Some people baulk at RAF WW2 camo as it seems less interesting than say US and Jerry schemes. But done well, it still looks good, especially when the old Black and Whites go on for the invasion stripes. :th:

Some people baulk at RAF WW2 camo as it seems less interesting than say US and Jerry schemes. But done well, it still looks good, especially when the old Black and Whites go on for the invasion stripes. :th:

White blocks for the invasion stripes are on. Debating now whether to paint the black lines or use the decals provided.....

OK - I bite the bullet :) Black stripes are painted on. Got a couple of small spots where the black bled under the tape despite me giving it a good rub to seat it and pushing the tape into panel lines with a tooth pick!! Should be easy enough to fix once the black has dried throughly.

The eagle eyed may spot the U/C doors in the (more or less) closed position - I cheated and packed the wheel bays with panzer putty to hold them in place for painting....

good work so far, the paint clean-up is going well too. I'm sure you will have the stripes cleaned up in no time. Can't wait to see it with the tape off with those stripes and cammo.

Tonights update - both sets of decals are on (Kits and Edouard stencils) and the matt clearcoat is on - and wet in the photos!!

Nice. Great to see the character emerging with the decals. They look good with the invasion stripes too :th:

OK - calling this one finished. The kit went together beautifully right up till the last step of the landing light covers. The clear parts were over size and needed a fair bit of sanding to reduce the width!! So if any ones got this in their stash its something to watch for. Otherwise a lovely kit to buiild.
