New model show in the UK

Post by RangerNeil »

In case anyone missed it there is a new show in the UK over the weekend of April 27/28 up at the NEC in Birmingham. Unusually its a combined event - model railways and scale models. Its backed by Airfix & Hornby amongst others and is a replacement for the now ended Warley model railway show.
I'm thinking of going to see what its like - doubtless the wife will chain, if not weld, the wallet shut!!

Went up to this show yesterday (Sat 27th) - I have to say firstly it was not as large as expected and secondly I estimate a good 75% of it was for model railway enthusiasts. Which is not to say it wasn't interesting because it was. Just didn't get the fingers twitching towards the wallet (probably a good thing given the mood the OH is in these days). One of the few model stores did - they had the FireFash airliner from Thunderbirds on offer at £45 - and sold out within minutes of the show opening!!! Another store had a 1/35 model of the German railway gun "Dora" - over 3,000 pieces in the kit but the price - oh my gawd.....

There were some fantastic built models on display though so heres a few of the photos firstly the 1:1 scale :)

These were the built examples on the Airfix stand - the only kit manufacturer in attendance, I don't count Tamiya as they were only displaying large R/C cars. They had a built Rotodyne and when I saw it I'm afraid I had to laugh - like mine the rear doors were sealed closed. The Airfix rep manning that part of the display asked why I laughed so I explained the missing rear door pins issue and, to his credit, he laughed too. :)

There were quite a few built displays mainly by various IPMS branches - all truly excellent.

The show was organised by Key Publishing who print the Airfix Scalemodelworld magazine and other model railway and also aviation magazines.
Not been to either the first of second, but my local model clubs Chiltern SMC and Letchworth SMC both had a presence there, and the feedback was very positive.

Great builds and some equally great photography. I especially like the boats and I'm not really a boat person  , but they were done especially well I thought.
