Revell 2017 Ford GTLM - Part Deux

After finishing the previous Ford GTLM, and not really putting in the effort, figured I would go ahead and do the 'other' kit I have. I had ordered the 2019 Wynn's decal set and was lucky enough to get a Scale Motorsports super detail set for the Ford GTLM - but didn't have a kit for it. Well, had the og one, but wanted to build that one red, white, and blue, because, well, 'Murica!! I got a kit from a LHS (I think it was Hobbytown) before we moved from Oklahoma, and got it half price because it was smashed on one side... opened it and it all looked fine, so picked it up.

Planning to try and do a better job on this one, mostly as it has the detail-up set, and I really like Ben Keating, whose car this is...

This car initially won the 24hr of LeMans in the GTE-AM category, but was later penalized to 2nd, and then later again, DSQ'd for multiple penalties. The team was new to the car and had multiple minuscule infractions that ultimately deemed the car excluded from the race results... sad really as I don't think Ben Keating is the cheating type, but rules are rules. One of the infractions was the limit of fuel in the tank. The #85 was discovered to have a 96.1 liter capacity, while the legal limit was 96 liters... they also had multiple pitstops that were just under the minimum pitstop time, which was due partly to fuel delivery into the car was off... there were other very minor penalties that all added up to the car being excluded from the race. Unfortunate really, as this was the last hurrah for the Ford GTLM (or GTE if you will) and the team had done an excellent job with their performance, but ultimately ended in disappointment.

Still one of the coolest cars around, and I got to see this car run a couple of times... It's amazing how low the top of this car is - if you've seen one in person, you know what I'm talking about.

Looking forward to this build and will probably end up giving to a buddy of mine who got the Ford Mustang GT4...

Understatement of the year, that thing looks frikkin amazing, can't wait to see this come together, and I dont really like car builds!

Doin' a little work on the Ford... Trying my best with this detail-up set, but I'm just not confident or patient enough to do these. Or possibly a combination of the two. Will keep pressing on though and try and add as much of the 'special' bits as I can.









The rear diffuser was a challenge and a half for me. Took the better part of Saturday, and a couple hours Friday evening to complete.









Started the priming/painting process as well. Definitely going with the left spoon, but wanted to see what the Tamiya Purple (TS-24) looked like. Not near dark enough, and has no pearl to it. The Zero paint is (obviously) for this specific car and looks great.





Definitely worth the time on this though, think it came out pretty decent. Learned a couple of things too.





Got the Zero Paints Grey Filler primer on and it will need to be wet sanded before I shoot the body... you can see on the chassis that the black is a bit 'rough' as I just shot the chassis with the Zero primer and then the SGB LP-5. Will do a little wet-sanding on the chassis as well - but not gonna worry too much about it as the chassis will be covered with carbon fiber decals [that's the plan anyway. ].

Looking forward to getting the body painted and start the decals.

Good job on that diffuser I can see it would have been a pain with all those curves and angles, not to mention the small area to work in.

The standard diffuser on these is absolute comedy in how thick the 'ribs' are, looks perfect with the PE

Always wanted to have a crack at that purple Wynn's livery version myself, I can live vicariously through you now

Got the chassis done with CF and clear-coated it - sorry no pics... I'll grab some and post later.
It didn't turn out the best. It was just a really difficult process and kinda kicked my butt at times, and looking back probably have the better part of 10+ hours int, at least. Learned a lot though and can implement in the future builds.

After getting the body painted was able to start the decal process. And gotta say, it's looking pretty good and very excited to get it done. These decals are great, and very thick - which means extra patience, in getting them to lay down and conform, and extra time.

Juuuust about finished with the decals. Like two more on the body and she'll be ready for a few hours in the dehydrator...
Got some stuff primed and started painting the bits - mostly chassis/interior parts. Still need to paint and add some of the PE stuff, but most will be added towards the end now. Messing with the brake discs/PE discs as they just aren't going together. The PE disc is just a touch smaller than the resin discs in the detail-up kit. But will figure it out, and worst case scenario can just use the stock ones. Would rather not though.

Also, a couple pics of the chassis with the CF. The bit there at the front can't really be seen once the wheel/tires go on - but prob should've went ahead and covered it. Was running out of the CF sheet though, and probably didn't have enough anyway. Gonna take a few days off from it too, as I started getting into 'rush mode' with it, and just need to step back a bit...

You can see a couple of wrinkles, and, somehow, I got a cotton bud thread stuck under there at some point...
The strakes on the rear were quite a challenge to do, and the chassis alone took probably (almost) as much time to do as the entire other one I built!!

Still a ways to go on this one, but a little progress. Tried sanding and polishing the clear coat - could've (should've) done more on the sanding side, but last time I tried it I ruined the paint, as I hadn't put down enough clear. This one turned out okay, pretty happy with it, and still need to detail some stuff on it... but getting there, and will give me the confidence to try the polishing stuff further (thanks for the suggestion, @cor!! ).

Got the chassis/interior all but done. And going back to the first post, I got this on the cheap as the box was smashed on one side, and while the body pieces were okay, the long side pieces that make up the L/R side were both 'twisted'... so it was a challenge to get everything to sit right. Lot a glue and a few choice words later, it's all together.

Most the car looks like the fenders, even though the 'side wings' look a little suspect, and again, could've done a bit more sanding before polish (live and learn). Gonna paint the a-pillars, headlight buckets, and a few bits here and there black and need to add some final PE bits...

You spend the extra time sanding and polishing and your model will look the next level.

Watch out when using the Tamiya red compound, it can eat through paint and decals pretty quick if you are a bit too heavy handed.

Little trick I've learnt with lacquer or 2k clear. First coat over the decals very light with slightly less thinner say 50/50 just enough to cover the surface. Don't worry about the surface finish, just that all the decals are covered, leave until touch dry. The remaining coats thin 60/40 or in the case of Mr Hobby super clear (my go to) 70/30. Normal coat, allow to flash off a little say 10 mins and build up over couple more coats or until any imperfections are covered and a smooth sury. The final coat is wet.

I find that I need no flatting and minimal polishing if any.

Calling her done. Had a couple of fights along the way, and several towards the end. The body didn't want to go on and sit 'down'... probably due to some of the twisted parts. In the end, though, got there and looks okay. I need to buy some metal primer as some of the PE stuff the color flaked off being handled. Pretty happy with it though, and tried a lot of things on this kit that I hadn't really bothered doing - some worked, most not so much.

Yeah, I hear'ya and thank you - but trust me, there be some faux pas' on there.
I try not to take pics of those. And most aren't horrible, but there. Mostly they're annoying.
Funny thing is, I took my time with this one and really tried, on the other one I kinda rushed it, especially on certain things, and it turned out just as nice a '5-footer'. Thanks again, though, lot of good people here.
