Pkw.K1 Kubelwagen type 155

Post by digger303 »

Due to a couple of requests from friends and me :thumb1: plus the diorama needing time to dry I decided to delay the Spitfire and slot this in.
Image

Only 3 sprues, but they look good.
Image

The instructions are luxurious with 22 pages of colour and not busy at all.
Image

The additional parts needed to construct this kit are 3d printed, very nicely boxed, well packed and padded.
Image

I'm sure I'll have something else to post tomorrow night.

Results of one night at the bench

It didn't take long to get this much done and all I had to do was clean the nubs and some small mold lines.
I should mention the plastic is very soft and almost creamy so care with the sanding sticks is recommended.
Image

All the pipes are round which is lovely to see so many older kits have mold slippage resulting in piping with steps. The overall
fit to this point has been so good no trimming was necessary although I might have to run a little Mr surfacer around the wheel arches.
I also as shown clearly in the instructions the front fender needs to have 6mm cut away in order to allow the ski's enough movement.
Image

The 3d printed tracks are really high resolution and I can't see any steps at all in the build layers ,maybe my eyes are weak.
However there is certainly a lot supports to remove although the resin is flexible and I didn't have any breakages.
Image

It came off with almost no clean up required

Just wanted to show after all those supports were removed that I had to go around a chip all these hair like supports hidden behind wheels and other parts that were close to each other. This is in addition to all those big supports.

Image

Still a bit hard to see, but there are at least 3 or 4 per wheel. Not hard to remove I just had to take mutime checking each part from multiple angles.

The front ski's are so close to the rear tracks I don't think it's quite to scale.

Image

From a engineering point of view the tracks are only attached via the rear axle. In life I doubt this arrangement would last a mile on the road. Too much leverage and weight just to be attached on one end there must have been a bracket around about where the leaf springs are other wise the tracks would just spread or jump up breaking the axle most likely. It certainly adds a lot of stress to the model when moving it round. Easiest way to see this is the instructions.

Image

I've just used masking fluid to hold some of the parts together just to see how it looks. They is enough slop in the front wheel attachment points to partly turn the wheels.

Image

Cheers guys

Not really a big update, but I just had to show you these styrene rifles that came with the kit. I don't actually use these as a Mg is provided instead, but these rifles are the best I've ever seen in styrene.

Oh and after adding some aluminium tape to the seat coverings the Kubelwagen is ready to prime.

Good to see you're using aluminium tape.
I've built one meng kit and will not be revisiting that particular vendor again for quite some time

Don't know if I've missed something - but what's the aluminium tape on the seats for Digger???

This Meng kit goes together like a Tamiya, as I said there is something missing in the way of a support for the track system.

I used the tape to create some creases and like for the seats. They were very slab like.

This is more a query than a update, I have a colour question.

Given this Kubelwagen was a prototype test vehicle and the time frame is 1942 how dark was the German gray.
This is Mr Hobby version of that colour. Is it anywhere close do you think ?
My pic did lighten the colour a tad it's actually at least a shade or 2 darker on my bench.
I know it's needs another coat, not exactly even yet.

    Appreciate any input.

It might be a little dark after weathering but if you go on the Australian Armour museums YouTube page they’ve not long restored a Pz 1 in grey so you can compare.

    Cheers

I don't think I will weather it as it is a prototype and would have been through the workshop and in 1942 the wheels hadn't fallen off the German war machine. I think it would have been pristine straight off the production line.
I might use it at a latter time in a diorama and white wash it.

As my phonelink on the Pc decided to give me the finger I'm a bit behind with my updates.
Today it decide to work .

    Then it was done.

Yes the MG is currently missing

    Just a idea

This variant of the Kubelwagen never saw action and production. This is just a figment of Meng's imagination.
It under went extensive evaluation and trials and was reasonably good off road.

"VW Kubelwagen Type 155/1 "Schneeraupe" tested in the autumn of 1942. The prototype was a Type 82 converted to the Type 155/1. The first tests were done without the the front skis. When the vehicle gained speed the front wheels dug into the snow so skis were added."

Also maximum speed was 8km per hr and fuel consumption 1.5litre per 1km, despite trying different configurations this could not be bested.

Great job digger! Like I said when you bought it, I almost got one too. I wonder how it would look in a winter scene with a white-wash paint over the blue/green base? Should I ever decide to get one, that is how I may try it. Regardless, I really like your finished product.

Just wondering, is this a stand alone or will it be in a diorama scene? IF not, what is your next modeling project?

Thank you and yes It is in my mind to place this in a winter scene all white washed at a later date.
My current build is the Hetzer with Miniart ruined building and thats progressing with the Hetzer built, building in paint stage and a couple of figures half done.
Also doing a bit on a Pibber that someone else had started....more of a side project while paint dries, not pushing this one too much.
I have my eye on doing a 1/32 Revell Spitfire next and it comes with a cmk interior ( if it fits ), replacement wheels, exhausts, instrument panel and maybe 20mm cannon.....not sure if they are right for this kit or not.
The bench has all been cleaned because we had visitors ( wife's directive) and now I'm trying to pack it all up very night to keep it clean and to keep the excitement up to start a new kit. So far all good after I session
Hope to get some varnish down today on the building then probably go back to the Pibber for a couple of nights while it dries. It's been fairly nippy here slowing down the drying process a lot.

    Prototype only.
Used way too much fuel is what killed it ( 170L per 100km) even though it's off road capability was very good.

Just think, if they had managed to build 10,000 of them earlier in the war it could have changed the whole outcome - or maybe not
