Tyrrell P34 1/12 scale

I'm new to this forum and new to sharing, not just lurking, on any form of social media, but here goes. I just started this kit last night so I'm not sure I'll get it done by the deadline. Regardless, I thought I'd share what I'm up to.



I have an affinity for F1, Rally and sports cars in general and this particular kit was a bit of a grail for me when I was building models as a kid. I'm a huge fan of Tamiya kits so I'm happy to add my little tip of the hat to the memory of Mr. Tamiya.

I've been able to make some early progress on this. So far, I'm really enjoying how well the kit is coming together. There's a bit more cleaning up of parts than I expected from Tamiya, but the fit and flow of construction is as great as I'd hoped.



I'm hoping to add some wiring throughout the construction. We'll see if my patience can keep up with my ambition.

It's a good start. I find that even a little bit of extra added detail, like wiring, can add a lot to the finished model.

Not a stupid question at all. All the engine wiring comes with the kit. The chassis wiring I did myself.

If youre building a lot of these things, may I suggest heat shrink tubing for the hoses, as the tamiya kit hoses are usually a bit too thick for scale realism. You can get them in all colours and thicknesses, even clear. After heating and stretching them, they can make the engines look quite a lot finer.

Get different diameters and see what looks best. For 1/24 the smallest I can get is 6mm, which stretches to super thin. Put a thin strand of white in the tube before you heat it and stretch the tube over the wire. That way you can bend it to shape. For thicker tubes, put the wire in after stretching.

Ali express is a good place for the thin stuff.

I've been making steady progress and am generally happy with the results so far. As with all my builds, I'm trying new techniques and learning a lot as I go. I'm hoping that the slow accumulation of skill, confidence and, perhaps most importantly, what I'm learning from you all on the forum, will lead to my being able to build at the level I see posted here by others.

Looking very good. Perhaps a bit of black wash needed in the disc outer vents ... It's the accumulation of little details that build into a masterpiece.

I use Vallejo acrylic black. It's quite thick. Squirt a drop from the bottle onto a pallet and using a thin brush you can fill all sorts of things. Brake disc holes, panel lines, screw heads,,, wet it a bit and it makes a good engine wash etc. Wipe off with a dry cotton bud, then wipe the last off with a slightly damp bud. Dries Matt.

A thin black wash over any part that has detail, even a braided hose, will make it look better, giving it a 3D look rather than a 2D blob the colour of the paint.

You can even use a light grey wash on black parts to bring out detail. Nice and subtle. The more detail you work on. The better the result. Do as much as you can.

Exhaust pipes look good. Looks like an ejector pin mark on the curve tho. Some kind of hollow. Fill these things with Mr hobby white filler putty and sand smooth.

This is all really great information. I really appreciate your taking the time to explain it all to me. I'm always apprehensive about trying a new technique or just generally overdoing things. I should get in the habit of testing on some scrap or maybe even on an inexpensive test kit. Thanks again!

I am sure the real car had a indent there where the clumsy intern dropped the pipe before install

I'd be afraid to mess with the radiators now and they pretty much hide all that anyway. That said, I do want to improve my skills past the point of relying on things being hidden, just for my own satisfaction. As long as the finished build is pleasing to the eye, I'm ok with it.

I have been battling with those damn ejector pin marks myself. Mine were on the straight parts of the pipes, not the curves.

Almost all of what I'm incorporating in my builds I've gleaned from forums and YouTube videos. Without skilled builders like you generously sharing what they do, I'd be building some pretty plain kits. Thank you for all your input.

I know what you mean though. I regularly build too fast, only for my failings to be shown up when the primer goes on.
