Tamiya 1/35 Tiger 1 Mid Production

Well good morning you lovely bunch of people

Having exhausted the hell out of the Nagmachon build, it really took a long time
I thought, lets go simple, old school and something that one knows isn't gonna make a frail mind just crumple up and die in exhaustion. So in that case, I think one can always rely on a Tamiya.
Tamiya engineering and quality just lets you build whats shown on the box artwork, and that one finds is a blessing and revelation.
So staring at the 80 odd models in my stash, and knowing that Tigers are not bad builds, if you have done one, its pretty simple to enjoy another. My eyes fell on the Mid-Production.
So lets have a look at the instructions and hopefully and their never is, anything scary in one of these builds. I know that I'll add Aftermarket and up to now, I have never built anything OOB








I grabbed my AK stand and drilled a neat little hole in the hull for mounting the whole thing.





The first part to build was the rear section of Tiger.

Now I forgot to say, I have never done Zimmert coatings and I know within our Cult its a very talked about topic with many views and different methods. I am going down the Tamiya produced path.
The next part of any Tiger builds is getting yourself organised with the blessed amount of wheels. Small pots and labels helps I find.


Did I forget to say, Eduard PE for this was started. Why do I do this to myself
So these as you will all know are the Rear Fenders.



I of course always have to go super silly and so bought the A/M T-Rex Wing-Nuts to add realism and do my head in with tiny parts. Which you can see in the image above are ludicrously small

So thats the start, and you know its gonna get more complicated cuz I just can't do simple.

Great idea to add Fruils, the tracks on the Tiger are so visible, they define the look of the kit so much.

Hey ho

Lets have a bit more of this awesome it.
So, I mentioned about Zimmerit
Never done and I have read a lot on it, some go with Putty (Night Shift is a big lover of this), and their are lots of ways to go with it.
I went with Tamiya's Decal set for this model. Bit of a cheat, but having never done it, its a simpler way of easing oneself in to Hot Water.




I have been dipping in to his book for inspiration.

So not difficult and I tore away some parts as damage.



Each month I go to a Veterans breakfast with my Father-In-Law to chat and have a get together. You can't beat a English, and no Hash Browns but proper Fried Bread.

Few bits of supplies added to my stores.





Bit of a jump, as I had got on with PE on top deck and removed the weld beads and added with Tamiya Putty and the tool borrowed from Night Shift again to imprint the weld marks.

I'm gonna have to jump back a bit, as in my excitement of Full English's I missed out a lot of build material.
I'm off to pick up my Father-In-Law in 30 minutes for another Veterans breakfast so it must be Saturday.
The Fruil tracks go together in a evening and I find putting them together a very calming and therapeutic lesson.

Plus a couple of figures to adorn the turret.


So with PE lets get bending some fenders.






Note on the rear Fender those pesky wing nuts that were A/M, no wonder they send spares

Atom Paints I think are new on the block, they are alright but much prefer Vallejo for brush work and AK New Gen for everything else. The Tamiya Putty is really good but very sticky so use of either water or Baby Powder a must

I want to try out some of these Zimmerit Tools and do have a couple available for next time.

Oh yes, Mug of Tea and Doorstep Bread and Butter a must

Afternoon all

Been a while, in fact, a long, long time but that’s life as they say. I often wonder what it would be like to do Modelling as a full time /earning thing? Just day dreaming on commutes.
I suppose like all things that are done for long periods day in day out, they become monotonous and tedious after a while? Nice to hv ether money to find out for myself.
Anyhoo, less of my day dreaming and back to reality. The reality is I snatch a couple of days of modelling here and there and when I say days, it’s not 24 hours long but maybe a good stint is four hours. I’m just very overwhelmed with work and play.
Me? Still major health issues and the body from below knees is a complete FUBAR, effects every part of the waking day and most of the night. It’s getting worse and not a lot of positivity coming back from NHS.
So, I don’t want to dwell on me, lets dwell on a great model from Tamiya and you can’t go wrong with a Tamiya Tiger be you a beginner or an experienced modeller.
So, the Main lower tub is attached to my AK model holder via a neatly drilled hole in the bottom to accept bolt and Wing-Nut.

Lots of prep work as always cutting off wheels and sanding and damaging the rubber shoes in places. Not too much but just a few nicks and lumps cut out. Then carefully separated into Cockle Jars and labelled accordingly.

I also bought some figures and these were bought from www.fieldsofglory.co.uk and from the manufacture First Legion. Never had these in my stash and probably Alpine would be a bit more quality but these were on sale and matched the scene perfectly. One belongs to a Stug crew but that’s irrelevant I feel.


Also, a Metal Barrel.

Whilst flashing the cash, I bought a PE Upgrade in the shape of Eduards 35624 Tiger 1 Mid Production.

And a bit more cash flashed, in the shape of the following, again from Fields of Glory in the shape of Tow Cables:






I also bought the following from wwwscalemodelshop.com


I went back to one of my favourite Aftermarket suppliers T-Rex Studio and ordered a load of extras in the shape of these beauties.














I also bought myself a new scriber for cleaning out weld lines.


Weld lines were okayish with the Tamiya mould but I do love the Night Shift method of removing Weld-Lines and then adding extra detail. It’s more work but it does give more definition when washed.
The upper hull build is normal and uneventful and typical Tamiya fit i.e. good and trouble free.













Work on Engine Access Hatch and addition of PE Grills which I damaged prior to C/A.



I also started work on the Rear Plate and this meant removing some moulded detail to allow the Zimmerit to be added.

Then lots of work on the Track Jack Box in the shape of PE and some work providing Wood Grain with a Wire Brush. This is then tempered back with TET and eventually you get a very nice wood grain effect.






In this shot you can see my handmade Weld Tool (All rights reserved to Night Shift), and is constructed from a Pop Tin and Cocktail Stick.

Then my world crashed.
My Dad was admitted to Warwick Hospital. He broke his Collar Bone whilst (Get this) exercising with Dumbbells on a Double Bed. He was doing presses. He went to put the Dumbbells down and as he rolled off bed with Dumbbells in hands, he fell and obviously put his arm out and felt a sharp, severe pain. Mum took two hours trying to get him off floor and when she did get him upright, it was evident that the Collar Bone was broken (lump). Mum rang 999.

Of course my Sister and BIL drove from Weston super Mare and we drove from our home, and arrived at Hospital and found Dad in a Ward, but being moved to another Ward. He seemed chipper but being Dad, p&@@ed off with the fuss. I was confused by all of this as surely this was a broken Collar Bone and although very painful it could and would heal in time.
It looked though, the NHS was wanting to keep him in and monitor. We all know that once in the system at 86 (actually, Going into Hospital is set with risks whatever the age and be honest after 60, your really not wanting to get admitted), the prognosis was not great. The susceptibility to catching infections and such whilst in hospital was greatly increased and everyone in the family including Dad thought the same. One of my Dad’s greatest fears was dying in hospital. He wanted to die at home and carried out in a box through his front door. I think a lot of us feel the same way as my Dad. Its not home and we want to be home.
My Sister who was closest to Dad, travelled back and forth from her home town of Weston Super Mare daily. I was travelling back and forth daily after work from Stafford and at first Dad seemed okay, talkative and as always entertaining the staff.
This started to tale off. We think he was aware prior to his going in that he had a illness and had been jotting down medical readings in a notebook for some time. He didn’t mention it to my Mum but he had rang my Sister and said that he was dying, and nobody believed him. Of course, many people state “I’m dying”, and the joking retort is many times “Well do it quietly”.
So, over a two-week period, he rapidly went downhill. Stopped eating and then stopped drinking. In the last few days, he didn’t even converse. I was going up, sat at his bedside with a coffee and a book, and would talk to him, but with no reply. After an hour I would leave. This was the same for any family member visiting. I think we all knew that the end was coming. The journey home for me was incredibly sad and long. I knew in my heart, he was dying.
On the 18.8.24, I received a call from Mum saying that Dad had died at 13:00 that day .
I don’t know how I felt at that moment. I was putting up a new Shower Head Rail and was standing in Shower. I finished the job. Then Mrs DW and I drove down to the family home and met up with Mum, Sister, BIL and their were no tears just overwhelming sadness, shock and I suppose confusion.
My Dad was no more. Gone. He had been a major part of my life for 60 years, then he was no more.
I will talk more about this, but for now lets get back to modelling.
So the Exhausts were built and the Shrouds were mounted on Toothpicks ready for painting. I wasn’t sure whether I was going to add the covers or not but went with mounting everything in prep for painting.



The PE Rear Fenders were added after the Zimmerit was added and the areas where the Fenders fixed were pared away.

I then built up the Turret as per instructions and once completed, I sprayed it with a off white colour (I mixed it from Tamiya White and a little Deck Tan).










I then moved on to the upper deck, the Weld-Lines were removed and re sculpted and a plethora of PE and 3-D printed Tool attachments were added from T-Rex. From images on web, I noticed that the Bow MG34 was often covered when not in use, so I fashioned a shroud out of Green Stuff 2-Part Putty. I also changed the Barrel Cleaning Rods to Brass Tube. A lot of work, but enjoyable.









I think that’s enough for a post that has been redundant for a while and smacks of sadness.

First and importantly my commiseration on your sad loss. Losing anyone is hard and losing family is the hardest of all. I know how hard it hit when my father passed in 2007 and we were not even remotely close so I cannot imagine how you must be feeling now. If theres anything that can be done tohelp a borother just ask.
Sadly the NHS is not what it was when we were young - theres more emphasis in money and less on clinical matters these days. So much so my daughter is getting out now. She is (was?) a band 7 physio leading the team in a respirator ICU/CCU and the last couple of year she's had no personal life working 14 to 16 hour days doing her job AND that of the two managers above her who are incompetent to say the least. The service needs a reset to the days when medical took priority over finance! But enough on this - onto the build!

The stand is a neat idea - must make the fine work a bit easier as the model is held stable. And a neat idea applying the Zim during the build - I wish I'd thought of that for the two did instead of applying it once complete. You picked up some great add ons too - the crew figures look good as do all the little details (emphasis on little with the wing nuts and clasps). PE looks good already as does the detailing on the turret build. I'm really looking forwards to seeing how it progresses.
What are your plans for the tracks - metal or???

I never realised how muuch he mean't to me and to a lot of others. So many came to the funeral and i wan inundated with people shaking my hand and hugs from complete strangers who told me what he mean't to them.
The NHS is totally bust and the more I attend each week for the Vascular Nurses, the dispondency andlack of morale is worrying.

Good afternoon my fellow modellers
I hope you’re all very well, and your Man Caves are producing beautiful works, and more importantly, giving you real happiness and joy.
So, let’s start off sadly.
The last picture sent by my Dad, smiling mischievously and about to launch into one of his ultimate and very diverse weird Face-Times video chats.

Mrs DW and I celebrated 25 years marriage (27 years of knowing each other) and this image was taken at the exact time we married, 12:00 outside the church we married at, 25 years earlier. What the hell does this woman see in this grizzled fool?

Buried in the graveyard of this church set on the highest hill in Burton upon Trent is this brave and noble chap.
William Harold Coltman, VC, DCM & Bar, MM & Bar (17 November 1891 – 29 June 1974) was an English recipient of the Victoria Cross (VC), the highest award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that could be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. He was the most decorated other rank of the First World War.[1]his church has the grave of William Coltman VC.
One hell of a guy. We laid flowers on his grave on that day as a mark of respect.
Health wise, I was now looking into having my legs removed as the pain over 18 years was becoming intolerable. I spent a lot of time at the Hospital talking to amputee’s and Doctors to get what would be involved. The Doctors were somewhat perplexed by a voluntary amputation, and they pulled no punches. I came away after four or five sessions, realising I was not ready yet. The major thing, that cutting off a painful limb does not remove pain, it becomes Phantom pain and the brain has mapped pain you suffer and removing the limb does not remove the problem.
They were brutally honest with me and were in a nutshell trying to dissuade me from doing this bold move. It worked. I went away re-thinking options.



But, back to the Tiger 1
Were building the Turret and upper casements, being Tamiya, it goes together beautifully and no gaps and fantastically engineered. I have built a few tigers from Tamiya and they are an absolute joy.

I lost my father at 93 yrs of age on 29th Sept this year. I worked along side him for over 50 yrs and every so often I think oh he must be due to turn shortly or I think I see him in the corner of my eye. It's not easy to suddenly be without someone so suddenly.
You have my best wishes.

The Tiger is looking great and you have my deepest sympathies for your loss. We lost my My Mum 10 years ago this November and it still feels raw. My thoughts are with you and your family mate.

It's been a long time since my last reply to your build. Just because I do not reply often does not mean I'm not watching. I feel your sadness as I lost my father in September 1999, but did not know what to say that hasn't already been said. My dad was a very big man, 6'4" and looked older than his age when young. He enlisted in WW2 by lying about his age (he was only 16). He drove fuel trucks for Patton's Army across Europe. After the war, during occupation he met and married my mom, she was born in Germany in 1930 and was a little younger than him. At some time in the 50's my dad "Big Ben" changed services and joined the Air Force. He worked on radar arrays all over the world. Many years later, one of the last things my dad told me when his health was declining was, "Just because you don't hear or see you does not mean I'm not watching and not there. I honestly believe the same for you.... He will always be with you in mind and spirit. I pray that our Lord bless you and yours with peace and comfort while processing your loss as the days, months and significant events go by.

As far as your build, I'm still really enjoying all the little details, and you still have so much more to add. Yes, sir, I'm still watching, keep up the good work!

Sad news thought it... My sympathies to you. Today is the 14th anniversary of the death of my father at 00h29. Will take care of my mom today as she still has trouble coping with it from time to time.
And congrats to you for your wedding anniversary ! A beautiful pictures as you can see the love in your eyes for both of you.

Good afternoon my fellow modellers
Blimey, two posts in as many days, I need to be careful.
Again, I’m going to cut the chat and concentrate on the modelling as I think I do go on a bit about everyday stuff, and not enough plastic.
Apologies if this is repeating myself, but this is the T-Rex Aftermarket Bosch Light on the frontal armour.


Now, Zimmerit. Everybody has opinions on this stuff. There are many well documented ways of creating this effect. Decals, Putty, Putty and Homemade Tools and bought tools, the list goes on and on.
As a Zimmerit Virgin I have gone for a bought Aftermarket Decal Sheet specifically designed for this kit. Never used it before and interested on how it looks and behaves.
Its treated just like a conventional decal and its warm water soaked and you can use whatever your go to Decal Solutions you choose. I’m a Mr Hobby user so its Mr Softener and Mr Setter.

So to show a little damage I cut and snipped at the decal and then applied with in trepidation,








The instructions with my ticks as completed.

A metal barrel was purchased.

This was fixed in with Araldite 2-Part Epoxy.



More works on Upper Armour and Lower Hull.

Addition of PE periscopes to the Turret.





I decided to test my levels of skills by replacing the Barrel Cleaning Rods as provided

Replace with Brass Rod and aftermarket Clamps. The Clamps I bought were Resin and super fragile, they just kept snapping. So I decided to bend some brass and the PE version is much more robust and tidier.





That will do for the time, I hope with some time off to post a bit more progress.

I’m going to cut my chat and get straight on with process.
Bit of work with Weld-Lines to Turret Upper Plate as the moulding was a little soft. Use of Two-Part Tamiya Putty for this.

You’ll remember from my last post I had gone all clever and replaced the Barrel Cleaning Rods with Brass Rod.



More works with Eduard PE to create a bit more detail to Turret Box.

Then on to Towing Cables


So, a bit more Aftermarket, keep bending the C/C.

Then some works on Rear Fenders and Side Skirts with a bit of damage added.






This also was a bit more Aftermarket from T-Rex but is the cradle / mount for Commanders Turret MG. It was a worthy buy but it was so brittle and took a lot of work to get it anything like in order.




More bending of C/C


I wanted some tarpaulins to provide a few rags and these were rolled out with Two-Part Putty.

Then we got to broke out the Fruil Tracks, lots and lots of them.


Think we’ll leave it there as Mrs DW is calling me and she must be obeyed.

Some truly excellent work there DW - the PE detailing is amazing!!
When doing those friuhl tracks I would suggest you borrow on of Mrs DW,'s thimbles - otherwise you end up with a VERY sore finger as when you pike the connecting wires through the links the moment they hit an obstruction they start going through your finger instead!!
Do NOT ask how I know this - even the memory is painful.
