Tamiya Tyrrell Ford F1 003 1/12

Hello all, here is my entry into the GB to honour the man who brought so much joy and wonderment into my childhood and beyond, and what better way than having a go at a classic kit from way back in the 70's

This will be my very first 1/12 car I've built so I'm really looking forard to it and hoping the 50 year old plastic will be forgiving and not too brittle!

Here are the box and sprue shots for you all:







The contents has survived pretty well considering it's age, a few of the bits have been snapped off the sprues, but nothing too major, even the decals don't look horrendous:



I'm not going to be building the box art version though, I've ordered the Lucky Strike decals from Indycals, so I'm going full smoke mode with this one as the Elf Tyrrell has been done to death:

Well this kit seems to have killed my mojo it's my first 1/12 scale car, and the parts are big, I haven't painted any part of it yet, and I think the size of them is putting me off for some reason, the body parts will take a lot of passes to get proper coverage as I'm wanting to change them from blue to white.

Also the chrome parts are strange, I stripped all the chrome off with oven cleaner, but I think it's a different plastic than the PS in the rest of the kit, it doesn't respond at all to normal PS cement (I've tried TET, Revell and even Plastc weld) it just doesn't soften at all. So I'll have to use CA on all the chrome sprues. I have tried scraping back to bare plastic, I thought all Tamiya sprues were PS so this is a new one on me.

I'm 50/50 whether to just scrap it and move on to something else, or just rush it and get it done and see how it turns out without giving it too much effort??

This kit turns into a great model. I've built it a few years ago, but I'm comfortable with big scale cars. They require time and patience but are worth it. I painted the body with a brush. The size can be rewarding as more detail can be seen and added.

The chrome thing is strange. Should react to cement normally.

Sorry to hear its not much fun at the mo.

I'm not sure about the glue question but as for painting, could you prime it first? That might give you a better base for the white?

Also, if its sapping the mojo right now, no need to grind it out if you don't fancy it, just put it side for now and find something that floats your boat for a bit.

Yeah those are the things I'm lacking at the moment

I'll definitely prime it, I've got a bottle of white primer that I ruined thinned a while ago and it needs using up so I'll have a go at it with that. I think I've just gotta push through this blip and I might be ok.

And yeah, the chrome sprues have annoyed me, this is the original 1973?! version, so not sure if they did use a slightly different plastic compound for the chrome sprues back then, but it's definitely not wanting to be cemented.

I have made progress, assembled the engine, air box, gear box, nose cone, rear wing etc all are ready for primer. And the Lucky Strike decals have arrived from the US

Oh keep at it, steal a half hour when you can
Do sections at a time
You will love working in the larger scale as easier to see
It doesn't have to be a masterpiece

All of the above goes through my own head yet last night I watched hockey I have no vested interest in, instead of doing what I wrote.

I'd have to agree with Scott. Sometimes the psyche comes in the moment, often when you least expect it. All it takes for me is a tiny win on something unexpected. You never know.
