HobbyBoss 1/72 F-9F Panther GB

Post by MrsModeller »

Just started the F-9F Panther as my main Cold War GB.

First, as always the box shots:-

Image

Image

Image

Sprue Shots :-

Image

Image

Image

Canopy is wrapped well in plastic bag and Styrofoam :-

Image

Decal Sheet is quite comprehensive :-

Image

Two paint schemes shown in instructions :-

Image

Image

Instruction sheet opens to A4 size is very clear :-

Image

I would like to see ballast weight shown to prevent tail sitting
Image

Image

Image

Image

A good sprue map :th:
Image

Virtually no clean up required in cockpit tub assembly :-
Image

Little bit of drama with the control coloumn :-

Image

but nothing some CA can't put right !!

Image

Image

Initial paint - Tamiya Field Grey.

Image

Instrument panel decal applied :-

Image

side panels matt black (humbrol black) and dry brushed with matt white and some detailing.

As Nick and I have been caught out with tail sitters (Me262 and Westland Gazelle - still thinking of suitable punishment for the Gazelle :) ) weight has been added and secured with CA in the nose.

As always comments and criticisms are welcomed :)

Great start Mrs M, the cockpit looks very nice.

I hope that control column snapping wasn't a feature of the real thing :o

Nice entry and update Mrs M :)
This blue paint scheme makes me feel like I want that plane :)

Hobby Boss' s kits look really fantastic, but it is commo m that you have no info about weights or paints in interior. I had the same issue with Mi-4, MiG-15 & Sabre . A- I followed the instructions that didn't mention weights. Only Mi-4 could be saved, other two have to be supported by small piece of blue-tack...

Good luck with the build, Mrs M :)

Cheers,
Radek

Thanks guys for the comments, I'm starting to like the HobbyBoss kits, the moulds are really crisp and panel lines are nicely recessed without being too deep. I also like the idea of having the lower halves of the wing as a single piece, it cuts down on filling and sanding a lot :D :D :D

Little bit more work done tonight:-

Image

More detail of cockpit tub

Image

Lead ballast added to nose - as you can see there is an acre of space in the nose :D

Image

Image

Nick made me some harness straps from Tamiya 6mm masking tape cut into thin strips and then painted in the buckles for me

Image

He also gave me a tip of laying out the parts on the instructions so that I can see how parts relate to each other :-

Image

With the wheel well, HobbyBoss have had a superb idea :-

Image

They have moulded the nose wheel assembly and incorporated the front wheel well detailing into the wheel assembly

Image

Another nice idea is found on the wheel shock absorber assembly :-

Image

Image

There are square and round pegs to get the fit the right way up

Wheel well and nose wheel assembled and painted (Revell matt white dry brushed with Revell dust grey)

Image

Fusalage halves assembled :-

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

As you can see the fusalage has gone together with virtually no gaps at all and seems to need only minimal sanding.

Few more updates from last night

There is an option for either underwing stores or a unarmed version, holes for the pylons need to be drilled out - Nick drilled these out for me as he has a bit steadier hand than me :)

Image

Image

There is a HUGE error in the instruction

Image

The "U" shaped pieces are the engine intakes and as you can see have been labeled B17 for the right side and B18 for the left, if you try to build them like this - this is what they look like :-

Image

Image

However if you swap them round you get this :-

Image

Took me and Nick 30 mins to get it sorted :)

If any body builds this kit - make sure the intakes are positioned outside the guide rail

Image

Image
otherwise there is not enough room to position the fuselage

intakes given a hint of colour

Image

HobbyBoss have had a good idea with the sprues, they have positioned the sprues to the major components so that there is a flat-to-flat casting

Image

Image
All that you need to do is file flat, which means that there is no deformation of the actual kit

Upper wings installed

Image

Image

One problem occurred :- Ajax the cat jumped up onto the table and managed to tip over a bottle of contacta - and a big dollop went onto the wings:-

Image

Image

Other than that no issues at all and virtually no filling seems to be required :)

Main assembly now done, just a couple of bits of minor filling, and now primed

Image
(Little bit of filler needed on the wing where Ajax the cat splashed some Contacta)

Image

Image

Image

The main undercarriage was a pain in the you know what to assemble :x

Started to paint up the Panther.... was thinking of black with yellow eyes :)

but have done it as below -

Nick and I have seen some of the kits with pre-shading so thought we should try,

Image

Image

Image

As you can see, the pre-shading was brush applied (Tamiya dark grey, XF-24. The airbrush that we have is a starter airbrush and is just for area work.

Airbrushed with Tamiya flat blue (XF-8)

Image

Image

Image

I will leave this to dry overnight.

As always, comments and criticisms are appreciated.
