new here and need help

okay so im new to the forum, ive been watching ISM on the youtubes for a while now. i would like to introduce myself, im keiran, im 17 and ive been in the hobby for about 5 years.but stopped for quite a while. only recently i started again. but the thing i need help with is, well to put it briefly i dont really know how to paint, embarrassing yes, but my excuse is, i made the kits, my dad painted them. i just need some heads up on some things i will need to paint, obviously starting with bare essentials, just if anyone recommends any products, please do tell. i need as much advice as possible. i have lots of things to paint, and have been eager to learn but i have no idea what to buy. i would like to hand paint my models only. because i dont really get much of a wage at where i work(subway).

hey guys, ive been eager to start painting, ive been doing a little research and went and looked at my dads brushes, he said i could have his but the brushes he uses are citadel fine detail, but that would be no use at all for me. painting a whole tank with a fine detail brush, ive been looking into buying citadel brushes, but if any of you guys knows any better please tell

As for advice, there will be loads out there, everyone has their own take on paint.

My 2pennys worth is that I try to use exclusivly vallejo paint, and always when brush painting use a big brush for big areas, a small.one for small areas, I know that might sound obvious but a lot of new modellers use the same small brush for every part of their model and it has a tendency to leave streaks.

As for brushes, buy the best you can afford. Try something like a revell, Humbrol or AK set to start with and see how you get on

Citadel brushes are great but expensive for what they are. Still if you have a store near you it's a handy place for supplies. Their paints are good too, but again a bit dear.
Do you ave a Hobbycraft store near you? They have a good selection of brushes including great value sets and most carry Revell and Tamiya water based model paints at around 1.50 a £2 a pot. Tamiya is tricky to brush paint but revell works well if thinned a bit with water. They carry humbrol and revell enamel paints which brush well but take longer to dry (and whiff a bit). They also have a 25% off everything sale at the moment but this ends on Tues 3 dec (use offer code in store 2000182366).
If you fancy a bit of mail order, check out the clearance brushes here for some bargains in the 50p-£1 range (reasonable postage too).

Hi mate, firstly welcome to ISM, secondly don't worry about brush painting. You can get good results using brushes, just take your time and don't be afraid to use as many coats as necessary. I would recommend using a good rattler can primer (Tamiya extra fine) as a base coat, then use good quality acrylics for your top coat. It may be an idea to check your local "cheaper" stores for brushes. Hope this helps.

thanks guys, there is hobbycraft and few art shops and i believe their is a model shop close to where i live, i shall have a look about and i was at a toyfair of some sort last Saturday, and i was having a look around to see if i could see anything, i managed to come home with a tiger kit, 2 books and my dad bought quite a bit, i went to buy some brushes and some primer, but went to bank and realized i hadnt been paid, was abit sad. but im okay for paints my dad doesnt really paint any sort of armour any more, so he said i can have all the paints he doesnt use and i do believe they are vallejo, so i think im going to buy some new things in a second, haha, but honestly thanks for the help guys. really helping

I heard this tip a while back and it seems to be ok:
'Use the biggest brush you can get away with'. If it's unclear then basically don't use a brush too small (e.g a detail brush for a camo pattern on a tank or aircraft) but don't use one too big (size 8 brush on individual cockpit details, assuming your kit isn't a crazy size!). Initially i'd get a detail brush which apparently you already have, get a size 2 or 3 and also get a bigger one like anything between 5-8 depending on the size of your models. With paints just make sure you don't buy Tamiya or Mr Hobby as they are NOT brushable. Hope this was helpful. I'm sure you'll get loads of help from the more experienced guys.

As has been mentioned I would steer clear of Citadel brushes. They are expensive, and they drop their bristles really quick. I have "standard" brushes that are now the size of detail brushes! I got some good sable brushes for not very much from eModels.co.uk's own brush range.

As for paints, I use Vallejo now. Their Model Colour range is a great range for getting good, real world tones, and it brush paints very well. You will also find lots of useful colours in that range for painting your German armour.

As for the painting process, I would encourage you to prime your models first. I have used grey car primer before, and it works well. Get a big can from Halfords of their grey primer (around £7 I think). Then use this in light coats on your model til its covered (doesn't even have to be 100% covered). Then thin your paints a touch with some water (so take some paint onto a pallete of some kind (I use an old bathroom tile), mix in a touch of water til the paint flows nicely. Then apply your colours. Do thin coats, and build up the colours. This way you will achieve a smoother, more even finish. I would get some gloss varnish as well. Put a thin coat over your finished paintwork before you apply the decals. Then put a matt varnish as your final coat.

Follow those simple steps and you will have great results! As you get more confident you can start adding in weathering steps, highlighting and shading etc.

Save up your money and buy an airbrush (double-action) and a cheap compressor. Use your brushes for detail painting and use acrylics. Lifecolor are good. With an airbrush you'll use less paint, and, if into German armour, you'll need an airbrush to replicate the finishes (not exclusively, but in general).

If you make a mistake, you can remove paint by spraying the kit with oven cleaner, sticking it into a plastic bag (tie it up, leave it 24hrs and wash it in warm water). You can buy a 500ml can of primer in any car accessory shop fro about £5-£6, enough for 10-12 1:35 kits.

You can get a good bargain on evilbay- a decent d/a airbrush won't cost more than £15-£20, compressor anything from £50 upwards.
