Special Hobby 1:72 Digby Mk.1 "Bolo in Canadian Service"

Post by Radzy »

Hello fellow modellers,

When I read the news about Storm & Norm setting up new, very noble, group build to remember fallen Canadian soldiers I knew that somehow I must participate. You know, because we're allies, we fought side by side and bravery of Canadian soldiers and their dedication for duty is undisputable.

So I was looking for some good kit that I could use to make this build special to me... Initially I thought about building early Grizzly AVP from Trumpeter... even bought the kit...
but... when I checked one of the hobby stores... I saw... Digby... the ugly Bolo :) and it was not only special because of it's "rarity" or "odd looking" or because I already knew that those old craps managed to sink some u-boats on patrol duties for RCAF and USAF, but also because it was Special... Hobby :) the Czech company that offers some unusual planes I want to have on shelf... So I could kill two birds with one stone :) have some great special entry for great GB and check what SH models are worth...,

If you want to listen some meaningless chatter about the kit itself, check my kit review here:

And for those of you who aren't already bored enough...

Update #1

Not much done so far... some preparations to put the cockpit area together...
And already some trouble... accidentially painted the hull with primer already... ffs... required some tough actions to remove the stuff...

So if you want to listen to total rubbish about history of plane... and some lame progress overview...

here it comes:

Sub'd big time for this one! You know, I just read a bit about the digby the other night. I have never heard of it before then, and thought it was neat because a lot of my family is from a town in Nova Scotia called digby haha. Looking forward to the build.

Cheers!

Howdy folks,

thanks for words of courage ... they're needed...
This build is very challenging and I can say only one thing - THIS IS NOT THE KIT FOR BEGINNERS..
I might've overestimated my skills here...

In the vapours of unterestimation comes ...
Update #2

This kit costed me lots of nerves in last few days.. Innacurate instruction, missmatched parts, messed clear parts... all stuff that could happen happened...
One week of struggle led only to finish the cockpit area and the hull can be now glued together...
So for now I find the following drawbacks of kit:
1) parts on sprues not numbered- so you need to refer to instruction's beginning all the time;
2) innacurate instructions - sometimes you struggle several minutes to find out how the parts must be glued (especially PE elements or resin parts);
2a) or sometimes some points don't clearly state what you should do...;
3) poor quality of resin parts;
4) clear parts - awful and don't fit their places in the hull;
5) in many cases there are no indication marks to allow you correct placement of parts on plastic elements...

So for now this is the worst struggle with the kit I ever had... and the only reason so far that prevented me from doing with this kit the same what Fasolly1988 (aka Peter Nichols) did to his M-113 is the reason I'm building it... I just can't let my Canadian friends down ... and I will finish this thing whatever the cost will be... (if I create crap... I will make my Grizzly to expiate my sins :) ).

Here's short vid update of progress so far:

Hello,

just before Christmas (where's snow ?! :) ) comes ...

Update #3

Struggle was still great... tons of sanding, misplaced parts and ... filling and sanding again...
So at some point I've decided to just stop it at some point and either finish it with all remaining holes... badly sanded surfaces and misplaced parts... or throw it away... The second possibility was not an option, so I just painted the top surface according to instructions and chosen camo pattern.

Here's the progress video:

Hello,

New Year brings ...

Update #4

Not much done, but I managed to finish camo pattern by spraying GSI H12 Flat Black on bottom of the aircraft.
Free hand again and I'm quite happy with the results.

Here's short but still boring video of spraying paint :)
