Roman Trireme

Here is another Zvezda Roman Trireme in 1:72 scale i built, this one was made two years ago and shows the ship with sails and full rigging.
On the ship there are some marines, sailors and scorpio artillery.
For the crew i used Roman sailors from Orion and Legionaries from Caesar Miniatures. The catapults are from Hät.
Ships like that served in the Roman fleet in the 1st and 2nd century A.D. when the Mediterranean was completely under Roman control, therefore they saw only combat against pirates and were mainly used to transport troops. The navy was never an important part of the army, but the Romans maintained a quite powerful fleet even when it was not needed anymore. I think it this has something to do with prestige and imperial policy.
The water was done a bit different as on the "Battle of Mylae" diorama, i mainly used clear "Window color" paints which worked not that bad.

For the water i first primed the wooden board with blue paint, then i applied several layers of transparent window colour. It was a bit laborious but the result looks alright.

Window color was a big trend (at least over here in Germany) several years ago, kids and creative mothers used those colours to make window decoration using templates from the Internet or books.
such a thing for example:

The templates are put under a transparent plastic foil and the lines get retraced with the paints. Later the surfaces inside the picture can be painted with other colours.
When dried those pictures could be pulled off the transparent foil and attached to a window, all colours are a bit translucent.
I used the transparent paint for the water effect.

The clear window colour works good in this scale, i´m sure you can use it at some point with big benefit!
with regard to the stone towers, they were not made out of stones, they were wooden but for some reason they felt like giving them a stone look. actually we know little about these ships as the wrecks can tell us a lot but not everything.
