Revell/Mongram Ju-87D 1/48

Well I know its not Friday yet, but I thought I would at least get my build thread started with my "new kit" proof shots.

For this GB I will be tackling Revell Monograms, very old, 1/48 scale JU-87D kit. I recieved this kit from a very kind youtuber by the name of Dosgaming101 and so I will be doing my utmost to do the kit justice.

So here is the box artwork

Clear parts, seem nice and clear. I don't have much luck when it comes to using Klear, or any other method of trying to make clear parts crisper and clearer, so I will probably just be leaving them as is.


Fuselage halves, basic sidewall detail. I may (note MAY! lol) dig up some ref pics of the cockpits of JU-87s and see if I can add some extra detail just to spruce that up a bit.



You will note this kit has raised detail, and while the box says 2006 on it (as does the decal sheet). This is very obviously an old old tooling....

So how am I going to build this. Well it will be an out the box build, purely as I haven't the money to be buying AM stuff for it. There also doesn't seem to be much available. There is quite a bit for the Hawegawa kit, but I don't know how compatible that will be with this one. The one thing I would like to replace if I can is the rear MG, which is woefully basic. I think Aires do a set, but you seem to get like 4 sets of MGs, and I only need one, so paying the £20 odd for that set seems a bit pointless.

As for colourscheme, well I might be boring and do as is in the instructions, which is light blue RLM 65 undersides with yellow underside wing tips, and RLM 70/71 splinter camo on top (I think).

I know its possible to get a good result even on a kit with raised detail but I am finding myself wanting to re-scribe the thing!

Issue being I don't have a scriber, nor do I know how to make sure I get straight lines!!

Funny, I have the same kit on the workbench Mine is a Monogram reissue. I'm trying to get it finished for the IPMS nationals, which is celebrating its 50th by having a "models of the 1960s" theme. I've started rescribing the panel lines. They're pretty easy - almost all straight lines. Have fun

One tip I have been seen (though I have never tried scribing in my life)

is to get some of the rigid plastic tape used for making labels (no the label printer type, but the ones that emboss a sticky plastic strip).

Apparently it can be put on in a similar to masking tape but is sturdy enough to act as a straight edge for scribing.

@Ian cheers for the tip. I might get some spare plastic and try using a few layers of normal masking tape, and see if that provides a good enough edge to scribe against. As long as I can get a nice straight first groove then I should be ok.

@Norm - Cheers. Yeah this is an old kit, just placing the fuselage halves together they do seem to fit ok, so hopefully it will built ok.

I have been away all weekend so have no made a start to the kit as yet. I want to get my Seafire done first as I am on the home stretch with that now. I will keep you updated however.

Ok so lets get on with some reference and background for the venerable Ju-87D Stuka dive bomber.



The Junkers Ju 87 or Stuka (from Sturzkampfflugzeug, "dive bomber") was a two-seat (pilot and rear gunner) German ground-attack aircraft. Designed by Hermann Pohlmann, the Stuka first flew in 1935 and made its combat debut in 1936 as part of the Luftwaffe's Condor Legion during the Spanish Civil War.

The aircraft was easily recognizable by its inverted gull wings, fixed spatted undercarriage and its infamous Jericho-Trompete ("Jericho Trumpet") wailing siren, becoming the propaganda symbol of German air power and the Blitzkrieg victories of 1939-1942. The Stuka's design included several innovative features, including automatic pull-up dive brakes under both wings to ensure that the plane recovered from its attack dive even if the pilot blacked out from the high acceleration. Although sturdy, accurate, and very effective, the Ju 87 was vulnerable to modern fighter aircraft, like many other dive bombers of the war. Its flaws became apparent during the Battle of Britain; poor maneuverability, lack of speed and defensive armament meant that the Stuka required a fighter escort to operate effectively.

The Stuka operated with further success after the Battle of Britain, and its potency as a precision ground-attack aircraft became valuable to the German war effort in the Balkans Campaign, the African and Mediterranean Theaters and the early stages of the Eastern Front campaigns where Allied fighter resistance was disorganized and in short supply. However, once the Luftwaffe had lost air superiority on all fronts, the Ju 87 once again became an easy target for enemy fighter aircraft. In spite of this, because there was no better replacement, the type continued to be produced until 1944. By the end of the conflict, the Stuka had been largely replaced by ground-attack versions of the Focke-Wulf Fw 190, but was still in use until the last days of the war. An estimated 6,500 Ju 87s of all versions were built between 1936 and August 1944.

So the kit I am modelling is the Ju-87 D7 the penultimate development model (the final model being the "G" variant which was much more a ground attack variant with large cannons in underwing pods). The "D7" was armed with a centreline 1800kg bomb on an extending cradle, as well as hardpoints for up to 4 smaller bombs on the wings. Two 20mm MG151 cannons in the wings and 1 7.92 twin barrel MG81 in the rear cockpit.
The D model had gotten rid of the siren and had a better visibility cockpit compared to the earlier models.

Paint wise I think at the moment I am going to go with the relatively standard RLM 65 undersides, and RLM 70/71 splinter camo on the upper surfaces. I may consider adding a winter camo whitewash over that, but we shall see.

Work is almost done on the Seafire, which means I will be starting this soon.

Right so this thread was for my group build entry, but frankly I am not feeling it anymore. So I have moved this to the WIP section for as and when I carry this on as a normal build.
