Amazing model buildings and scenery

I hope I don't infringe any rules be adding this.

I have visited a number of times Pendon Museum near Didcot in Oxfordshire, it is an amazing place and an inspiration to me when I built my "Somewhere in England" dio.

Pendon is basically a railway layout BUT that is just a small part of the main layout, because the buildings and areas around them are truly fantastic in detail, there are beautifully painted figures and animals and the scenery epic.

The main layout is about 30 ft by 50 ft and this is in roughly 4mm/ft, and there is an area that shows how the buildings, etc are made and painted, this is the interesting bit to me and I feel this can be related to the making of dioramas just by scaling it up.

I have no connection to Pendon other than being a paying visitor there and to me it is the Holy Grail of modelling, and if any of you are in the area it is really well worth pay it a visit.

Sorry some have a green tinge but I hope you can see what I mean about the Holy Grail of modelling, everything is to scale, each roof has individual tiles or slates, the is a clematis around a cottage door and each flower has the correct number of petals and of the correct shape, this is modelling in the extreme.

Nice find mate, I believe that the first photo is based on a real building and is either a series of Alms Houses or Army Veterans Cottages. I think that they are in the town of Abindon, Ofordshire.

All the buildings are based on real buildings, the late Roy England wanted to record old buildings which he saw being knocked down or changed out of all recognition so he went around basically the Vale of the White Horse doing drawings and taking measurements, there is even a model of him doing this with a cottage in one of my pics, even his bike is up against the cottage fence.

I would love to have lived in those days - no computers, no iAnything, no TV, the Nazi war machine threatening the stability of world peace, that sort of thing. These are astoundingly beautiful pieces. I could spend hours in a place like that, just daydreaming about walking those fields and tending the garden, the sound of the lark, the trickle of the stream. Somebody slap me please.

What you have all said is just the way I feel about Pendon, and the last post was just poetry. So pleased you have enjoyed my pics which really do not do justice to it.

If at all possible do visit Pendon but do check their opening times.
