Calender Model Challenge!

'ow do, folks!

With the new year approaching I decided to buy myself a calender, and it ends up being 'Legends of WWII' and there is a plane for every month. All of the pictures are pieces of art from Michael Turner (a famous artist or something) and they look amazing. So what I've decided is that every month I will try and build a model for the aeroplane of the months *gulp*. This may have to be done not within the month time frame, but as long as I get the 12 done I'll be happy.

I will basically use this thread to ask for assistance in picking the right model for the monthly build as I'm new and have no experience with different kits and I'm hoping to do them all in 1/72, however I will do 1/48 if there aren't any good 1/72's. Here are the aircraft is monthly order:

Jan - De Havilland Mosquito (PR RAF)
Feb - Martin Baltimore
Mar - Bristol Bombay
Apr - Curtiss P-40 Kittyhawk
May - Supermarine Spitfire (the markings are KH Z, so I'll look that up)
Jun - Westland Lysander
Jul - Short Stirling
Aug - Vickers Wellington
Sept - Short Sunderland
Oct - Hawker Hurricane
Nov - Avro Lancaster I
Dec - Vultee A-31 Vengeance

Basically folks, my first question is, can you suggest a good De Havilland Mosquito PR in 1/72 kit to get me started on my adventure next month?

Hey Rob,

I have no idea about some of the aircraft, never mind the models and how easy/difficult they'll be to build... probably getting in over my head. Although I've always had the mindset that you never learn fully from going the easy route. We'll see!

So far I've found De Havilland Mosquito PR variants from Tamiya at 1/72 and 1/48 and Airfix at 1/48.

Anybody have any experience with any of the kits linked above?

Don't know about the tamiya 1:72 but the tamiya 1:48 is an excellent kit. I think the airfix one is quite old now with a few little niggles. I'd go for the tamiya 1:48.

Thanks for the thoughts Nice, I will certainly take your suggestion into consideration. I'll also be looking to see from reviews how the Tamiya 1/72 stands up.

@Lee and @makingmodelsagain - I certainly know this is a mountain of work and I may not complete it, but its nice to have a goal... going to see if I can get a Dr Havilland Mosquito order tonight, hopefully start next week.

iv built the revell 1/48 mossie at the start of the year and its a very nice kit

@ridgers22 - I'll be sure to look up the Revell model as well, didn't see much about it, but having a quick scan it does come up.

I've also found after @MakingModelsAgain's post that finding a Bombay may prove to be difficult, if not impossible... lol.

Michael Turners work is amazing! As a kid my bedroom was covered in posters of his paintings, had a big book of his work too. I'd love to know where that went!

Hokay, so after your feedback and doing some research I decided to go for a Tamiya 1/72 scale Mossie, and it arrived today in the post. I can see from having a peak in the box it's going to be a lot more work than my first model, which I'm still going through - Airfix's 1/72 Supermarine Spitfire Mk1a.

As this is going to be a 12 month challenge I'm trying to work out how to do it on the forum. Should I start a thread in the W.I.P section and do all the models within that, or should I start a separate thread for each model, probably a question for the mods...

I'm hoping to start in the next few days, hopefully get it done within a few weeks now Christmas is out of the way. :-D

So I've been in discussions with the Managing Director (Girlfriend) and I may have to put a halt to the challenge before it starts. Sad I know, but it's something I can do another time, but when being practical, it's not financially viable. We plan to get married this year, and get a house, so fund will be limited and I'd prefer to enter some ISM GB's and SiGs with 'model allowance'. So the challenge is postponed as we say in the UK due to 'Bad Weather', but will resume once the sun is back out.

I do have the De Havilland Mosquito though, so I'll still be putting that together in the near future. Sorry to get your hopes up.

Draz I was once told that there are two phrases to remember when dealing with other halfs. which are yes dear and no dear apparently getting them in the right place is key . good look with the mossie
