Weathering Submarines?

Hello all,

As one of my friends has recently built a 1/72 scale submarine, I'd like some advice on weathering for it.
I thought maybe you could use oil paints for the rust streaks? What other weathering possibilities are there?

Hey I was talking to a submarine modeller a while back and he suggested rust and tarnishing for ww2 subs. Oils should de great for this as you have mentioned.

Though for more modern stuff this would look strange.

Here's a quick pic of a sub that's taken a bit of a beating from the elements! I've seen a few pics showing missing tiles but never to this extent, you can see a nice green build up around the waterline too.

The tiles on the hull are rubber designed to reduce the acoustics, these often fall off even in normal operations, some Soviet subs had their entire rubber coating fall off on one cruise
