Is it or ain't it?

Post by JohnP »

Asking you guys a question...

Would you guys consider the F-117 a night fighter? (I'm considering it for the night fighter GB...)

Depends on how tightly the rules are defined I guess, the F-117 wasn't really a fighter but more a bomber, since it did not carry guns, and its objective was to reach a target undetected and drop its weapons on it, not engage other aircraft.

If anything I would consider the F-117 a bomber since it has never been used for air to air combat and I believe the airforce only used the F- prefix to attract the best pilots they had to fly the then radically new aircraft.

It's a "Stealth Attack Aircraft" but I'd call it a bomber, as it is often fitted with LGBs. They usually used them during the night during the gulf war as there were less MiGs and such active then, and as a stealth plane the only way to detect them would be radar at close range or visual ident.

So it's not specifically a bomber nor is it specifically a night fighter  , but if I were Lee I'd let you use it. Ask him though.: :

Don't quote me, but I don't think the 117 had any air to air capability, so I wouldn't say it was a fighter.

No on-board radar, no cannon, never mounted air-to-air missiles (and would have had to use heat seekers due to the lack of radar anyway).
