Hawker Tempest Mk V - Eduard Limited Edition in 1/48

Hi Guys

Well with my Crossroads diorama getting close to being finished, I feel the need to put glue to plastic again. After digging around in my stash, I've decided to attempt the following.



Hawker Tempest Mk V

The Hawker Tempest was an improved derivative of the Hawker Typhoon and one of the most powerful fighter aircraft of World War II. Tempest's were supplied to the first Squadron's in April 1942, the first to 3 Squadron and then 486 (NZ) Squadron. In June 1944 the V1 Flying bomb begun to be launched against London and the Tempest quickly became the preferred tool for dealing with them. They also had success against the new German Jets, including the Me 262.

The Kit

The kit is one of Eduard's early kits, spiced up with their resin and coloured PE and the other extra's associated with their limited edition kits. There are no attachment points on the parts so careful dry fitting is going to be the order of the day. Also as you see some clean up inside the wings is called for.







Not alot of plastic there but some good detail.

Nice, is this an Eduard moulding or is it another manufacturer,s kit they have pimped, so to speak, look,s a corker though.

One of the things that I think sets Eduard apart is the fact that you can download their instructions in PDF format, this I think is a great way to plan your purchases and actually see what you are going to buy before you part with your cash, also being able to see the finished colour scheme helps you decide which one you will build.

With that in mind, I long ago chose which aircraft I would build. Boringly I chose the box art scheme.

Pierre Closterman

Pierre Henri Closterman, Grand Croix of the French Legion d'Honneur, French Croix de Guerre, DFC and bar, Distinguished Service Cross, Silver Star and the Air Medal.
Closterman joined the Free French Air Force in Britain in 1942, after training he was posted to 341 Squadron RAF, flying Supermarine Spitfires. In October 1943 he was commissioned and assigned to 602 Squadron RAF, he served through D-Day and was one of the first Free French pilots to land on French soil.
In December 1944 he joined 274 Squadron RAF flying Tempest's. In his 432 sorties he was credited with 33 victories (19 solo, 14 shared, most against Fighters) and 5 probables and 8 damaged. He also claimed 225 vehicles, 72 locomotives, 5 tanks and 2 E-boats.

After the war he wrote a very successful book, The Big Show, on his experiences during the war. It has been suggested that this was one of the finest Aviation books to come out of World War II.

Pierre Closterman died 22 March 2006 aged 85.

Anyway off to start cleaning up the resin parts. Hope you come along for the ride.

I did this for the WWII GB on here and it builds up nicely just watch out if you use the resin cockpit it fouls on the wheel bays so need some cutting to get it to fit.

Here the link to the build with in it there is a couple of photos on page 3 I think where I had to cut and how it fitted after. (Just hope it works lol)

Nige, yep it has helped.

Been doing lots of cleaning up, working with the resin and the etch, I'm getting old, can't even see some of the etch with an optivisor.



Painted the cockpit Barley Grey and with a black band on the sides, I did read somewhere that they made this change to the later Tempests. I then added a wash of black/burnt umber to add some more depth to the cockpit and added some scratches and scuff marks.

Also completed the propeller.



As you can see from the above picture I have also started to add parts to the fuselage so I can work on the fit of them. Over the next couple of days I will get the cockpit tub together and then I can begin working on getting it fitted in the fuselage.

Well after lots of cursing, sanding and fighting, I've finally gotten things together.





I'm upset with myself after all I've gone through the seat is off center. I've begun filling and sanding the easy bits and have a bit more to do.

Jay, it's frustrating mate but even with that I still think I'll get a decent build in the end.
Looked in my diary and filling and sanding are the only entries I have for a week .

Hi Guys

It's an hour and a half to Christmas, so a big Merry Christmas to everyone. In between watching Carols with the missus, I got the last of the sanding done, primed and added the yellow leading edge.





Really happy with the result. Next up, mask the leading edge and pre-shade.

Bit of a jump here, sorry guys, I got the preshading on, then I thought I would try a little something different when doing the camo, didn't quite work out the way I hoped, still if you don't try you never know.







Decals are currently on and a protective coat of future is drying, so I'll get those pictures up sometime today hopefully.

Decals on. Took a bit of a liberty, the Free French symbol (Lorraine Cross?) was only on the one side in the Eduard instructions but I thought it looked better with one on each side.

Nige, thanks for following along for the build mate, for a kit with so few parts it really PMO a few times, glad it's done.

Just noticed that I haven't weathered the landing gear covers, better get on to them.
