Airfix for schools.

Post by Nige201980 »

Just had a word which my kids head teacher and she is well up for doing this and with me helping out. She looking to get the kits and for the kids do them around the time of they are doing the WWII part of of their year but hopefully will have upto 30 kids building models within the year. Even if one child keeps at it or come back to it in latter life would be worth it and hopefully I can teach them a bit about the aircraft (spitfire or Me 109) and the life of the pilots and what it was like for them at the same time.

Wish me luck in this venture and ill report back soon.

All the best Nige.

Went to Cosford last week, they do an Airfix birthday party where each child gets a spitfire to build.

That sounds great we need to get the kids more involved in things like this and our own history which modelling helps with well i think it dose with my two.

the school is doing it mate Airfix do a bundle for about £40 with 15 kits i think some paints, glue and brushes then its just me given up my time which i dont mind doing. There is a form on there website that the school has to send off. will just be the other tools that are needed which the school should have.
If any one else is intrested in doing this for there kids school check out

Its great project that airfix is doing.

First rate stuff Nigel.
You're a champ dude for doing this.
Someday one of this wee ones will thank you for it.
I know that I'm thanking you for it.

I tried once when my oldest was in elementary school to do the same sort of thing, unfortunately there wasn't much interest.
I really hope this works out.

Me to Michael like I said if I get one child interested it will be great. And if I get them interested in history or that time in history will be a bonus because some kids over here don't know any of our modern history.

Scale modelling is, in part, preserving history, so participating is always win win I think.

Nice one Nige and good luck with it.

On a similar note, I attend a weekly group for people who claim ESA (a sort of unemployment for people with disabilities) and we sometimes just have a natter but the people who run the group, Prospects, are always looking for activities to do to "keep our spirits up" or give us a "sense of achievement" and I suggested Project Airfix which, like Nige said, is a box of 15 Spitfires for £40. The Prospects management loved the idea and asked me to order them and I found out that Airfix were offering a buy one get one free so we got the 109's free! We've now built them all and Prospects have rolled the idea out to all their branches across the country, although I don't know how many have taken up the idea.

Hi Nige, hope everything turns out all right with the project Airfix build. A lot of schools need to be reminded of the importance of WW2 and I think this is probably the best way that this can happen. I just wish a similar project had been available when I was a kid. I was always the odd one out because I was into modelling and so hence knew a fair amount of WW2 history when my class-mates didn't.

I work as a building surveyor in social housing, I mentioned this to another department who does kids clubs on various estates during the holiday's. They purchased the kits of the spitfire and I had to do the demonstration for them. To make things go a bit quickly I made up the required number of cockpit sections with pilot fully painted for each session. This was so the kids could put together the fuselage with the cockpit section already made and painted to be fitted. It might be a good idea to do something like this first.

Very glad to see airfix kits being introduced to the school kids. Great exercise for hand and eye coordination, and loads of fun. Best of both worlds! I wish all schools in Norway would do the same. It´s a great way of staying focused and it helps us to preserve the modeling legacy for generations to come. :thumb1:
